[1490] Visiting the Family Shrine [part 1]

Post by paarfi » Thu Aug 17, 2017 10:47 am

Fred posted part 1 of this MT side story to his Patreon. He's planning to post it to the main site tonight. [edited by paarfi after hearing from Fred]

Here's the commentary he posted with it:
Kind of a bit of an experiment here... this is actually stuff I DID want to expose readers to as this chapter continued, so a little side story about Mugi and her daughter visiting the family shrine in Oichinaka would cover a lot of things (and be kinda fun too) - and actually sort of important to cover as we move ahead with the current chapter for reasons that im not going to tell you :P
Of course, doing this shrine visit in normal full blown comic mode would take months, so i had the idea of maybe just doing things in story-board format, drawing everything out on a sequence of index cards and and... well, writing it as I went. As usual in how these things come together, i let the characters guide things. It's a bit rough, obviously, and i hope you dont struggle too much with my handwriting but... let me know what you think of this kinda format for some extra storytelling stuff.

Love the idea of it. So I look forward to see how it continues.
I do think this has potential of turning into an omake. It's fun to see this side of them.

I'm pretty sure this directly relates to things that are happening in comic but just getting this in the story would take another 10 years or so and there'd be readers whining all the way that it didn't really mean when it said it meant. Better to directly show the whole "dog eat dog" nature of MT with something like this.

For some reason this made me think of a roadkilled racoon I had to pick up in front of the house the other day and I wondered if that was the sort of fate Mugi could have been facing

It looks like Mugi wasn't old enough to hear the answer.

I get a sort of The Eccentric Family vibe from this story only with kitsune not tanuki. Hopefully Mugi stays out of enough trouble so her mom or grandma doesn't decide to take her tail for themselves.

So we have three paranormal Japanese families now. The Sonada's, the Sawatari's, and the Ninja's (I don't remember, is Junpei's family name known?). The magical girls seem the most outwardly normal, though they scare the TPCD more. Perhaps I'm just seeing their more western dress and home and calling them normal. The Dad hunts aliens, Yuki and Miemi jump over buildings and they have, or had, a pet zombie zilla.

It looks like we are maybe going to get to see some interaction between these groups as well.

Well now... family almost takes a backseat to the pursuit of power in the foxgirl world. That has got to give you an eerie feeling in yer bones...
Some of the dialogue was a bit hard to read, but I way appreciate the long story strip comic. I will reread and puzzle a little for this much content a few times a month happily.

First off I really liked this style of comic. It felt like it flowed more naturally than usual, but I think that's just due to it being more character driven (or that I read it all in one sitting rather than over months). Looking forward to the rest.

Second I was hoping someone could clear up something for me: how long has Komugi know Miho? I always assumed Komugi's accent was Irish (even though it's in Japanese duh) so she has been with Miho since close to the beginning. But this comic made me realize that she was Japanese, so has Komugi just known her since she's been in Japan? It always seemed like Komugi knew more about the true nature of Miho's predicament than anyone else.

Hey nice! A Sketchy Side Story! =)

Uhm… Apart from being an MT story addict, I have no prior knowledge of the entire kitsune concept, so you could sell me anything as common knowledge.
I guess that makes me sort of an ideal testing platform for this experiment.

Well… in my opinion, it works great, Fred! =D

You’ve managed to greatly entertain me while exposing me to quite some totally new information in one go. =)

And now for dealing with the new information, which is a bit out of my comfort zone…
I tend to visualize concepts in rather extensive de-tail…
Pun intended.

=)

Kitsune is the Japanese word for fox, or for a race of shape-shifting, trickster fox-spirits. The spirits are long lived, and the longer they live the more tails they have, and the more tails they have, the stronger their magic is. The strongest and most ancient are the nine-tailed foxes, like great-grandma Sawatori.

There has not, at least yet, been any indication that the Megatokyo kitsune can shape shift.

Thanks for the additional info, richvh. =)

And… shapeshifting?
Now *that* would neatly fit in with several current story lines…

That was a pleasant surprise. I could really get into the flow of this comic. The interactions between Mugi and Yakugashi seemed very natural and it gives us a better idea of how they interact with each other than the few snippets of comics we have seen them in. So I guess Grandmas are the most powerful creatures in MT?

I'm a couple of comics behind on the transcripts. I'll try to get caught up this weekend. I can see where it'll help particularly with this comic.

You know, if this were cleaned up from "row of index cards on the scanner" and the text redone, you'd pretty much never know it wasn't a normal comic produced in the usual way, albeit with oddly uniform panel sizes.

Fred has... unique additions to the mythology that he's been spouting in Twitch chat for a while now. This is the first time it's coming out in a "proper" comic. (That exposition dump seems to rather be the main point of this sequence, in fact.)

I fully support this story being a full spin-off comic. Can we clone Fred and just dedicate one of them to write this?

Didn't read over the whole thing, but note that the twin-tail kit's name is Yakugashi, not Yakugasui.

It is probably just me, but I'm having trouble reading this comic. Is the script available or a fan transcript?
