Loss of hearing can also be caused by diseases such as measles, mumps, and chicken pox. Get vaccinated.

I don't really know sign language so please forgive me if I am misinterpreting this, but in that last panel was Ashe trying to cut Megumi off from saying anything else about Piro and Kimiko?

Thanks Fred for this great setup! I am looking forward very much to how this will play out and it is a great answer to people who thought this was an uninteresting side track to the story. Kudos man!!! =D

I have had nearly as much fun reading this Forum thread as I had reading the comic that it belongs to.

Thanks all! =D

I didn't frequent the rescript threads often, but that was one that I saved and still have on my computer.

Exactly. I stand by my initial assessment that this is hands down one of the best subarcs ever. And the "be careful what you wish for" element of Fred's artistry has always been one of the many things I admire about it.

That is way more flattering than I deserve. (Like most of the ones I did that were any good, they very much as paarfi said above "wrote themselves" ;)) And the first iteration was indeed roxor the boxors so you're not wrong there.

Fred could indeed be building up to a perfect bookend to that one... "They said they were just 'getting cleaned up', so why does seeing it make me feel so... dirty?" Poor Ping. :?

(And I know I've said this before but I'm still sad the old archives are down... that was another wacky thread, someone (I forget who sorry :() did a Robert Goulet one that was pretty surreal... oh, and there was a "ceiling cat" meme going around at the time, so somebody else flipped one of the panels and did a Ceiling Ping gag... actually most of the entries for 967 were pretty surreal as I recall )

She's probably hard of hearing rather than truly deaf.

Functionally there is not much difference for conversation purposes if your hearing is so poor that hearing aids won't help you make out words.

I think it might mean that there might be additional (expensive) surgical options not available to the truly deaf, but I'm not sure about that.

Only thing I know for sure that it effects is your prestige inside the deaf community. (True deaf have a higher prestige than hard of hearing - in American deaf culture anyway).

It also effects the probability of Ashe's children being deaf (as she is hard of hearing it's more likely that her children would not be deaf than if she were true deaf).

There's a good chance that Ashe cannot bear children and as for surgical correction...well she's kitsune so odds are slim to none that there's even been research into something like that. Oh well, maybe if she'd consent to become an experimental subject....

If a kitsune's middle and inner ears aren't human, they're fox. Mammal ears are pretty similar to each other. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4718163/They all have the eardrum, three bones in the middle ear, cochlear canal, etc. Principles of surgical correction should be pretty much the same as with a human. Of course, the person who would do the surgery would be either a vet, who probably doesn't have experience with ear surgeries to correct hearing loss, or a doctor, who doesn't have experience with fox ear surgery. Similar doesn't mean the same, so it's possible the surgery could be botched. Although... if congenital hearing loss is common in kitsune, there could be a kitsune ear specialist.

If there's a decent size patient population, generally speaking, there will be doctors who study and practice to treat them. Otosclerosis, the growing together together of the bones of the middle ear, was associated with measles, so when measles was more common every good EENT (eye ear nose throat) doctor had experience with trimming off the extra bone for that hearing loss disorder. I mean, there's enough kitsune around to breed and keep a population going, and doctors study for really rare diseases all the time.

Regarding the other, I have no idea where that is going regarding Ashe and Megumi's conversation.
Ashe is trying to find out if Megumi knows that Ping is a robot. From her response, Megumi does not.
To my knowledge, very few know that Ping is a robot. Hardly anyone ever notices the earblades.

This is true. But Ashe does know Ping is a robot per her discussion with DrGero. Megumi could also have found out during her talk with Ping while Ashe was out confronting DrGero, but Ashe didn't know for sure. So this was her way of finding out without actually revealing it. And now Ashe knows that Megumi doesn't know.

This is one of the things I like best about MT. Not everybody knows everything. And who knows what makes a real difference in the story. It's fundamental storytelling in a lot of ways, but so many stories don't seem to do it well.

I honestly can't imagine Fred letting Ping and whoever actually intrude on Kimi and Piro.

I have a good imagination and a twisted sense of humor but I just feel vaguely horrified at the notion of that happening.
Walking in on Piro right now is about the worst thing that could happen to him, so yes, that sounds right about on track. Protagonists are defined by how much they suffer, after all.

[Hospital scene, a young couple holding their baby as a concerned doctor is talking to them]
DOCTOR: I'm afraid we've run the tests, and there's no doubt. Your daughter is.... is ....

YOUNG MOTHER: What is it doctor? We can handle it together.

DOCTOR: A protagonist.

YOUNG FATHER: No! There must be some way to fight this!

DOCTOR: Fighting it will make it even worse. Your daughter is doomed to a life of trial, suffering, pain, and being an inspirational role model. You should plan on your insurance companies voiding your life insurance. The tragic death of a parent is often seen in these cases.
Nurse: But on the plus side it means that she will almost always survive in situations where NPCs like you and I would die like flies, she might luck into powerups and development where we would just stay the same even if we did survive and she might actually have a name! :)

Hrmm, I think it was mentioned in Twitch. The kitsune have a lot of congenital defects due to their limited gene pool and vagaries of how they can reproduce with human males. Ashe isn't profoundly deaf but it is congenital and there may be other complications.

None of that means that Ashe hasn't had wonderful loving relationships with human men and I was teasing Fred that he should do a one off of Ashe cuddled with her guy and playfully tickling his face with her tail. I'm still waiting on that :)

Maybe she does. AFAIK we do not know anything about Yaku's father other than he ain't around. Given that she is a twin-tail there may well be Kitsune heritage on both sides.

Also, when breeding is difficult, you would expect that any child would be a cause for rejoicing. Yet Mugi was given a hard time and semi-ostracized by her family. Perhaps the father belonged to an enemy clan, or was a renegade of some sort?

Or kitsune could just treat their men like mantis or a spider treats theirs: they eat them to get good nutrients for their offspring...
They are monster kin after all, aren't they?
If they fall in love, they just set them free, never to be seen again...

Mugi was 14 when she got pregnant with Yaku and her mother booted her from her home. IIRC Mugi's mom is a 5 tail and I believe that she didn't have much use for her one tailed offspring.

Incidentally I have a suspicion that Mugi's devotion to Miho is very likely to be due to her and the CoE crew saving Mugi from death on the streets.
