[1501] Broken Glass and Back Seats

Post by DracMonster » Sat Dec 09, 2017 7:15 am

Fred has posted the new comic to his Patreon. He'll post it to the main site and elsewhere tomorrow.

(Haha, Paarfi, I stole your thing!)

For anyone having trouble following what's going on, Piro and Kimiko are still in the back seat under the blanket. A reminder where that was going.

EDIT: Fred done went and changed the comic name from what it was on Patreon.
[edit by paarfi] Changed thread title to match

Thanks Drac. Fred posted it after I went to bed. :)

Megumi does not look happy. I suppose this is not the shared Megumi/Mugi kitsune grandma that she's calling here, but her other grandma. Interesting.

I think she's decided to be a little mean here. Her grandmother's is presumably a safe place to bring them, but it'll also probably put the kibosh on any further... fraternization between them.

I'm picturing her going "Hey Grandma, look under the blanket!" when she gets there, but that would probably be a bit much. :)

Grandma Nine Tails' shrine is a long drive from Tokyo. Especially now that Mugi's car is a rolling wreck.

Yeah, but I did a "poll" here on this a while back. We're starting the thread when it goes up on patreon. If you don't support Fred's patreon, that's totally fine, just avoid the thread for a day. That was the consensus recommendation of folks here on how we should handle it.

It's up now though. :)

So... what exactly is going on in that backseat?

I mean... Piro has a back full of glass, I can only think about the horrific pain he must be in and how difficult it will be picking all that glass out of his back.

He probably needs to go to a hospital - a different hospital - once they stash Kimiko somewhere safe that is.

How can Megumi see in the back of the car with the mirror out of whack like that?

Car window glass is designed to break into non-sharp pieces. It's not comfortable to lie on, and definitely not conducive to gymnastics, but he shouldn't actually be sliced up.

She can't, but the fact that they're too distracted to answer her probably tells her all she needs to know. :D

It's safety glass, he'll be fine. Uncomfortable, but fine.

Just going to point out, the name of this comic is "Broken Glass and Back Seats", but the name of this thread is "Broken Windows". I just thought someone should point that out, though admittedly it's not that important. haha

Fred changed the name after I made the thread. People (including me) were having trouble figuring out what Megumi was annoyed about, so I guess it was to give them an extra nudge.

Megumi looks done.

It's Mugi's car. That just might make it even worse.

As far as rear view mirrors, am I the only driver around that has twisted one up to give folks in the back seat some ah... privacy? (and/or in disgust)

The woman walking her dog looks a lot like Seraphim and Boo. Is this the long-awaited return of Piro’s conscience?

Oh Fred… What’d you do? Try not to damage Teddy’s love for Megumi…

Nice expressions — I can understand she’s not too happy… Super fake happy, though, that smile to the lady with the dog.

Thanks for the new post! =)

Even if she could see in the back seat, all she would see is a blanket, and maybe a couple of sets of legs........

Oh, is this a different grandma? My first thought was "Ah ha, that must be why Fred did those "Family Shrine Visit" strips recently, to introduce the people and setting; Kimiko will now be hiding out in the kitsune shrine, parallel to Miho hiding out in the mystery dojo."

But a new grandma would be fun too. :D

EDIT:
Just after posting this I vaguely recalled forum discussion (possibly in the threads for the Family Shrine Visit strips?) about Mugi and Megumi being related via their fathers, not mothers, so the kitsune (maternal? also mentioned somewhere in those threads?) grandma wouldn't be a shared one...

Presumably the published version of the Complete Megatokyo Omnibus, once the story is done, will have appendices with genealogical charts a la Tolkein.

For the record, Megumi lives with her Grandmother. This is actually something that goes back to the early days of MT, the fact that Megumi lived with her grandmother, even long before Mugi and the rest of the Sawataris came along. I know it didnt show up in the comic, but its just funny how things go back sometimes. Next comic will tell more.

Aye, Megumi's mother's mother soon enough!

Other things. The mirror is turned up already here at the starting of 1501, clear in panel 2. Last time it's clear is in panel 4 of 1478 where it's not up, lots of ways it could have put there. If Megumi put it that way, it would also explain why she's again like panel 8 of 1482 and suggest quite a bit about why. Even if we take what's happening here in 1501 and the car as just being a vehicle that's driven precariously through hospital wreckage, had its back window blasted out by a fifty cal, and been landed in/on by ninja who one of the times was on the roof stopping a giant mecha hand. Either way though, if whatever we saw happening from 1479-1482 is still ongoing, the suggestions are perceptionally rather somewhat obvious in general. No matter if they're true or what they turn out meaning.

Let us say seemingly all this will put things with Kimiko and Piro on a more even footing with where Erika and Largo already are. Which would make what Miho was thinking in 1121 apparently no longer valid. At least suggest alternate ideas about who might who end up with are unlikely valid for now and probably maybe later. Stories move around after all, and we could consider who Kimiko is playing right now as more real than who she is. Maybe she does. Maybe not it remains to be seen. And all topics of discussion for quite a while perhaps, until if and when they're verified or not.

Safety glass doesn't break into large jagged slices like regular glass would, although in this case it didn't fall out as a big sheet but bits fell all around. If you clean up broken safety-glass windows, you can easily find out the chunks are still quite sharp and capable of cutting. If Piro is on top of a bunch of them directly, it might be pretty bad cut-wise although likely not much other than superficial and painful and bloody. Messy and not a time to go taking a bath in lemon juice. Something to regret when your adrenaline is no longer deadening the pain.
