Translator Notes: The what and how of MegaLettering, translation Megathread

Post by cidjen » Fri Nov 03, 2023 8:11 pm

Well,
it looks like I need to hijack this sub forum for updates (and in the future, probably also more description, maybe? with some pictures) on translation.

Reason being, now that both facebook and discord don't want to let me in without 2FA, i can not use these any more as my /other/ online identity needs a phone number for /their/ own discord and facebook purposes and they can not be shared...

So, time permitting, looks like i will be posting information and answering questions as replies to this post. Hopefully it won't bother the admins here too much.

The timing is kinda convergent, as I have finally, after close to a year of a gap, completed translation of page 1497.
But more about it, in its own post. Or maybe not. maybe just a single-line one nothing to it.

[1497] More skilled than sparkly [PL] Głuptaski

Post by cidjen » Fri Nov 03, 2023 8:22 pm

The https://www.megatokyo.it/?lang=pl&id=1497 will go live on Midnight CET on 5 November 2023.
It's been a while since I posted the previous one (2 Dec 2022...).
I have no excuse and I can not promise anything be any different going forward.
Though this one had actually stalled on me on the last panel for last, idk..... 6 months?
Just did not have head space to get the feelz of this one.
I also 'titled' the page a bit differently than the original (polish title comes from next panel over, where Ririka says 'you silly boys'.)]
Anyway, enjoy.

I assume there's some equivalent in polish for Ririka's baby talk?

Unfortunately it was easier to emulate the, you know, teen like talk of the ninja granma;) guess that is why this page and previous took me so long as there wasn't much of a reference from my culture to emulate ( apart from the cute little blue limo that keeps bumping into her son line, that did get the cute treatment from me) I called on some 'licencia poetica' with the 'damage to the love of the genre' and have the fan say "please stop, such scenes I watch in gore [as in the genre] you know" ( I wonder if he should say 'i prefer _' here instead...) (This kinda mirrors the infamous "zombie guro" page from way back when;) )

To my mind Ririka talks here like a grown mature woman that used to be the magical girl but is fully grown now and is (acutely) aware of it too. She might have still the young female voice, she sounds like a girl here. not like a mature woman or a grandma, but her vocabulary is fully ...shocking ;) not R rated though. There is not enough cuteish words in Polish that could express what "barfies" are in PG13 kinda way... The magirl fans have to lose interest for some reason...

[1499 WIP]

Post by cidjen » Sat Dec 16, 2023 6:54 am

1499 work in progress...

Yah so i'm clearly not very well versed in the little magical girl material, maybe because the only one I ever watched was Sailor Moon ... and it wasn't in dubbing - back then when I first saw it, it was translated by a voice-over reader (aka lector) - this has its advantages - you can hear the original soundtrack and the emotion the original VA does [even if it is in Japanese] and the lector does ... yeah that is the clue : HIS... umpteenth to not give his emotion out. The disadvantage is that, you can't imagine any polish VA that would have fit with this vocabulary... So, here's the struggle - to me Ririka is actually a mature woman, i either imagine her with the voice of Krystyna Czubówna - very known and loved polish VA and journalist - she did the voiceover [yes lector style! at first, then full dubbing on later seasons/remakes] on polish version of the nature documentaries of David Attenborough - Or Anna Dymna as she sounded in the 90s- early 00s (very acclaimed polish actress, you would not associate her with a 'magical girl' genre by then already - but when she was young, she /was/ an object of many many crushes way back then, in the 70's, with her young roles, but well, you'd be very hard pressed to find one that is more loved for her artistry till these days...)

But that's not what I'm actually kinda struggling with.
I've translated the conversation of Largo and Erika here as (translating the meaning back to english here ;J )

Erika : What?
Largo : These minions of yours, they can not be trusted.
Erika : What, you jelly? [it's not literally that but I kinda 'want' it to sound that way in polish, like Erika is ironizing here]
Largo : For the purpose of this operation, let's assume, that one could say that.
Erika : Stop it. [here the original was 'Fool')
Largo : Because why, that's so dumb of an idea- [original: Who is more foolish? The fool or-]
Erika : Very dumb. [ Literally in polish I wrote 'głupi jak but' = stupid like a shoe/boot ] [ Original: Shut up ]

(the 'very dumb' is kinda coinciding in timing with Ririka complaining of her 'screen story' being dumb, so it adds to mystery if Erika is talking to Largo 'dumb' or talking to herself about what she's hearing Ririka talk about - the timing here is kinda cool)

It's not yet published so you won't see it public yet...
I am struggling to find what does this passage refer to, the 'who is more folish, the fool or-' what Largo says. I'm trying to put myself in that conversation but i'm not exactly finding the flow easy... any hints appreciated ;)

It's a Star Wars reference: “Who’s the more foolish? The fool or the fool who follows him?” – Obi-Wan Kenobi

The whole interplay between those tweo I believe hangs off the "are you jealous?". Erika is trying to dismiss his fears, and he is saying "yeah, OK I probably am jealous, but do you really knpw what you've got yourself into here?"

That's my take, anyway - I hope it helps.

1499 in polish will publish at GMT+1 on 19th December 2023 :)
Kudos to @Ningen 2 for explaining the 'fool' reference :)

The polish title is the part where Ririka points at Erika and says 'like this one here'.
(it's kinda formal-ish special panel-ish way to introduce someone with or without pointing at them, as Ririka is pointing at Erika here, literally it means 'like this one who is present here' )

Also Ririka in my version is saying kind-of-along-the-lines of 'see they made me into a little skinny blondie [there aren't many words in polish by which one could call a female 'flatchested' and not be considered rude or very rude, and none of them fit here], imagine that. Lucky me, they could have made a human/female tank out of me' sort of.

Enjoy ;)

OOh that was cool thank you!

Here's to hope that whoever reads that, will catch that reference.... the assorted quotes from the SW translations into polish weren't super uniform.
(not helping that most of them quoted it being from a book not from the movie(s) but I may be wrong on this one, i only briefly googled.)

[pl][1500] zabutelkowana / trapped on the inside [eng]

Post by cidjen » Sat Jan 13, 2024 3:53 am

Page 1500 will go live 14th January 2024, midnight of GMT+1 time-zone.

Title may be a bit unfortunate, as it literally means 'bottled', I meant it like a 'djinnie' in a bottle [uh oh, feel a song coming up, run for your lives] - unfortunate as everybody knows what a 'bottle' may also be referring to... :/ pinky swear i did not mean it like that. Should I use 'canned' instead...? but that [zapuszkowana] is polish slang for being in jail. A bit out of character for Ririka to say that imo. Another word for metaphore like this, may be 'w potrzasku' / in a [bear/wildlife]trap... but that would require changing some more text than I'm prepared to think, and also out of character... Hopefully Ririka is not secretly drowning her sorrows of the lost power...

[pl][1501] stłuczka na tylnym siedzeniu / broken glass and back seats

Post by cidjen » Sun Jan 21, 2024 3:00 am

The polish translation of page 1501 will go live at midnight of GMT+1 timezone, 22 Jan 2024.
Not much to say about translation here, apart from it's being the 'normal standard' to make the onomatopeias translated (we got our own set of uhmms and ahs thank you very much). With a possibly double meaning for the title - literaly meaning 'broken glass on the back seats' but also, the word 'stłuczka' can mean a 'minor damage [assuming car] collision' with the double entendre, that in english i've heard it being described as 'just a kiss' ... 'nuff said ;)

I made a change in what Nurse Ririka says, about dr Dare - it is back to almost original, being about a research doctor, this word in polish 'badacz' can not only mean a 'researcher', but also another form of it 'badanie' can mean an 'examination' which is what doctors do. Thought it could be a nice pun... hopefully.
The edited version is live now.

Ah how i long to FFto the hotel scene already :)
But in the mean time,
started work on page 1503.
Megumi still pissed off. More by each panel.
At this rate i might run out of metaphors.(this btw is a pun, to mimic the Speaker of the Lower Chamber of polish Parliament, a former TV star, such a breath of fresh air)
But the world clambers on.
