Does anyone here still buy DVDs/Blu-rays?

Post by moot » Mon Dec 18, 2017 2:32 am

Yeah, it's me. Been busy with a new kid, the day job, and time-wasting gatcha games.

ANYWAY: Does anyone here still buy boxes? I just realised there's new blu-ray box sets for both seasons of Stand Alone Complex. User reviews haven't been great, they largely focus on the use of close-captioned dubtitles for the Japanese track. Anyone here who owns the set, willing to comment?

Or for that matter, does anyone here still buy discs in the age of streaming?

PS I need a place to host an avatar...

wow moot, grats on the child.

and i think i occasionally still buy from the occasional right stuf sale. recently picked up genocidal organ because i missed out on the theater run in the states...and a couple back titles because they were cheap at the time (free ship at 50$ i guess). a few ghibli movies have been re-released on bluray by gkids last month, i also bought a couple then...

i don't have any info on the SAC box, other than the one that came out in 2013. It's big and expensive and looks great, just that it doesn't have english subs but it has the dub.

streaming on hulu probably is just as good for my purposes, iono.

I can appreciate the busy with new kid feeling, congrats on finding the time to even do the gatcha games.

I haven't bought DVDs in forever, mostly because I've got a budget to live with (lots of mouthes to feed...) and streaming is just so convenient...I might be tempted if there's something I'd really want to keep, like when I got the whole set of Cowboy Bebop oh so long ago.

All of a sudden, I'm seeing Malaysian DUBBED versions of very recent anime (Dragon Maid & Hinamatsuri). Fast pirates?

I will buy them for certain movies, series, or things I really just want to own, or feel will be out of print or in limited print. I don't see a whole lot of offerings for 4k blu-ray though.

I actually only started seriously collecting anime last year after DECADES of piracy. Mostly favorite recent shows or classic shows that I want to own forever mind you. ...And a lot of trashy Yaoi/BL/Fujobait.

I have a couple of questions (for anyone who sees this/knows about this stuff):

What are the best websites for buying anime DVDs (or Blu-Rays)? I already know about Right Stuf Anime, and I noticed in omo's reply on this thread that he mentioned Gkids as well. Are there any other good websites?

Also: if I'm looking to buy a DVD of an anime from 2001, am I unlikely to find that anywhere? I was looking to buy Nana, and all I could find was:
- a few extremely high-priced used copies on Amazon ($100-$400)
- some copies on eBay, and where the description mentioned "original copies - NOT bootleg" but since they've sold 86 copies I don't believe them.

I bought the ones on ebay anyway, because I'm impatient and always want stuff now, but there are other old animes I'll be looking to buy too (such as Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien).

https://www.sentaifilmworks.com/ tends to have better prices than Rightstuf for Sentai's stuff... despite Rightstuf seeming to be their distributor. O_o

Personally, I still prefer DVDs and whatnot over streamed content. I like collecting the physical product and in the event of a streaming site going down, I'll still have discs.

I buy the shows I like. There are tons of anime shows and OVA's that are not available via streaming.

If you don't own a physical copy or a digital copy, the odds are you are never going to see it again, once it starts getting old.

Sure Ninja Scroll and Akira regularly make the rounds, but there are plenty more from that time period that are gone. Once the new shows start aging out, only the mainstream hits will get regular playbacks.

For anime, streaming is for one and done. Physical or digital copies are for watching the show again.

Yeah, I guess I’m just too set in my ways. For some reason I can’t really stand digital copies that if I had a malfunction, I could possibly lose. Same with games, would much rather have a physical disc than a game in theory.

I keep a small collection of BluRays for shows that I have enjoyed above all others. There are several television series I'd like to get on BluRay, but there isn't a license-holder in the United States for some of them (e.g. PLANETES, Infinite Ryvius, Baccano!). My BluRay collection is significantly smaller than my personal list of favorite shows because I'm very frugal with physical media, and I not everything I watch is either an EX+ Platinum-tier favorite, or a show I'd want to share with my friends. The collection as of now is comprised of:

Gundam: The 08th MS Team
Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Gundam Unicorn Complete Series Box
Gundam Wing Sets 1&2 and Endless Waltz
Gundam 00 10th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Box Set (I can't not own my favorite series in the franchise in its deluxe edition)
Cowboy Bebop (still hunting for a newer Region 2 pressing of the movie)
Death Parade

I wasn't expecting to buy newer American films, but some things just belong on my shelf. The Gundam BluRays are here because I told myself a long time ago that if someone licensed Sunrise's Gundam BD catalog in the States, I would buy the shows I really liked, and the collection is still growing (need to get the original TV series, 0083, Zeta, ZZ, CCA, F91, X, Turn-A, and Build Fighters). I'd like to get Ghosts in the Shell SAC's two seasons and the epilogue film, but the BD pressings have as-of-yet uncorrected issues with their audio tracks and I don't intend to make a purchase until that gets fixed.

Over the course of 40 years I have amassed a collection of videos (VHS and then later DVD and Blueray) numbering in the THOUSANDS. I remember paying 60 bucks a pop for a single volume of Urusei Yatsura on VHS (and I collected the entire set). However, since the advent of Netflix and then later the Anime Network, I no longer purchase movies or TV series anymore. I can simply watch them at my leisure on these networks. The only exceptions to this that I have made are "Freedom", "Cowboy Beebop", "Planetes", and all of the Studio Ghibli films. I made sure to have hard copies of these films as I consider them to be among the finest examples of anime ever produced.
