The best girl contest going on on Reddit:

In the opinions of you, is it just a shitshow?

Like how the fuck could Idolmaster characters get beat out by Love Live characters. How the fuck is there no one from Rokujouma no Shinryakusha.

I mean, I haven't seen that many shows, but I would not have picked some of the characters who were in the first (and even second) brackets over practically ANYONE from Maria-sama ga Miteru, or Rokujouma no Shinryakusha, or Idolmaster, or some other shows.

I'm guessing most of the people who vote don't actually know most of the characters they're voting against.

Edit: Kind of funny, when I first started voting in this I thought, "yeah, I'll vote for shit, it doesn't really matter, it's just for fun, it doesn't matter who wins", and by now I got sucked into actually being somewhat serious about it as some commenters are. Guess it was easy for me to get sucked into. Obviously it doesn't actually matter at all.

Also, I like to have some fun with this, so, my list of girls who, out of the shows I've watched, should always be in the running every time for best girl:

Rokujouma no Shinryakusha: Yurika

Idolmaster: Hibiki, Takane, Ami, Mami, Chihaya

Mnemosyne: Rin, Mishio

Emma/Victorian Romance: Mrs. Trollope

Maria-sama ga Miteru: Sei-sama, Yoshino-chan, Youko

Idolmaster Cinderella Girls: Minami Nitta

But let's be real, in Rokujouma no Shinryakusha, Idolmaster, and Maria-sama ga Miteru, pretty much all the girls in these shows are the best girl. So I'd be happy with pretty much any of them being the "best girl."

Oh, also, a personal preference, I love Kaede (Candy Store) from Non Non Biyori and think she should have definitely beat out the main girls.

Also, Kyoko and a few others from Working are very high up there for me.

A reddit poll isn't going to a be a whole lot better than some Newtype ranking that had Kira Yamato and Lacus Clyne take spots for a good decade after their shows. A lot of this is probably people voting for shows they watched vs shows they haven't.

It is harder to go balls deep into iDolm@ster however than it is Love Live. Love Live has its anime which basically covers everything, and its rhythm game has been localized into English. Im@s has none of its games officially localized, the anime has to be spread thinly because of the vast amount of characters out there - which also means a lot of characters get barely any screentime or appear at all.

That poll doesn't even have Ui Hirasawa as an option.

Best girl contest indeed. Pff.

Yui Yuigahama, Akari from Captain Earth, Megumi Tadokoro from Shokugeki no Souma, Nagisa from Clannad, Mikuru Asahina, Akane from Flying Witch! 8-)

I liked Candy Store, too.

Edit: add Akari from March Comes in like a Lion, too.

A number of girls were already eliminated in the beginning stage. One of the rules was that no more than five girls could be entered from any one franchise, which cut out several good girls.

Anything having to do with reddit is automatically shit.

For me, a "best girl" for any particular series is a girl that is sophisticated, complex, with depth. You could lift her wholesale from her setting, put her in a completely different setting, and she as a character would and could stand on her own. You can't do that with a moeblob character, because they've only got a couple of character traits and that's it. They're a caricature, not a character.

A couple that I've picked:
Fuyumi Iris from Hyouka
Sophia from Last Exile

Everyone else picks characters that they want to masturbate over, or are moe or whatever. As an author, as someone that reads, a character with depth and complexity is infinitely better than a mindless blob that looks cute, but to each their own.

Having just deleted my Reddit account yesterday for a variety of reasons, I happily agree.

It's not at all better, it's worse. At least I can buy that people care about Lacus and Kira because ever since the two came onto the scene, people know about them and resonated with those characters. It was from a show that a lot of people in Japan was aware of (For Newtype). Reddit... is kind of like a magical, echoy abyss. Especially in this day and age where most reasonable people go to the more social social networks to see their peers.

Although, i think the reddit game as is, is closer to just whoever the bandwagons are about, so i wouldn't read too much into the results.
