What are you watching/reading 2023?

Post by Yl33 D4 N00b » Mon Jan 02, 2023 12:38 pm

New Year! Have 11 shows so far this season! I want to be hyped for Kubo, but her model doesn't quite match the manga. Of course, there's Vinland Saga S2, and Nagatoro S2. Oh, and Maple S2! :D

Three shows so far: Bungou Stray Dogs S4 starts off with Ranpo's origin story in a film noir style. Nice! Tomo-chan and Ice Guy got repetitive quickly, weakening their debuts a lot. If either continues like this, I'll likely drop them.

Buddy Daddies is just OK, giving it 3. Lots of well worn tropes here, so the key is in the execution(no pun intended, lol). So far, that's just so-so.

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten is good! I like the interactions between the leads. A keeper!

Have not watched the original Trigun, but the reboot Trigun Stampede is pretty good, studio Orange has done a great job with the animation! Lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth on MAL about them ruining it, the Original is the only good one. Don't care, I still like it.

Dozed off in the middle of the 1st ep of NieR:Automata Ver1.1a and couldn't stay awake. Yes, the story is that boring, and I couldn't invest in the characters. Dropped.

Nagatoro isn't starting off as strong as S1. The writing feels cheaper, as does the animation. Nagatoro is not a B cup, lol! Hopefully, it'll get better.

Kubo is great, right in my wheelhouse, especially with HanaKana wielding her magic. That is all. ;)

Vinland Saga S2? They added some backstory for Einar's origins, and it was as glorious as it was brutal. Awesome.

Kaina of the Great Snow Sea is CGI, but it's not bad, with an interesting premise!

Even though I liked the general dynamic between the two leads, the "freezing everything" shtick that Ice Guy uses 20 times an episode is fatiguing. Dropped.

Rewatching .hack//SIGN and discovering disc 3 won't work. Fortunately someone put them up online and they haven't been taken down for some reason.

I really, really, really tried to like Fire Hunter, but the only thing worse than the jank animation was the jank writing.

Oh, and I dropped Buddy Daddies, too. Are there any of the characters I can like/empathize with? Nope.

The manga Beat and Motion just started on Viz, giving it a shot, though the writing so far is very predictable.

Finished To Your Eternity S2, Underwhelming is the best way to describe it. Now there's going to be a S3 set in the present? Ehhhh??? :?

I think I got to 4th book, many, many years ago, and just got bored/tired of it. Good luck!

Knocked off a couple of more series......

Nagatoro S2, IMO, wasn't as good as the 1st season; I think they spent too much time showing Nagatoro and Naoto being awkward with each other. I think the manga did it better here.

Kaina of the Great Snow Sea's weakest point wasn't the CG, but the overly simplistic writing and mostly one dimensional characters(the Atlandan Captain and the girl in the armor were the best characters), plus some plot armor, made this a boring watch overall.

BnHA S6 finished strong; Ochako's speech was a highlight. Setting up nicely for an epic S7!

Trigun Stampede continued to be a delight for the eyes, even though the story itself became a bit murky(at least it did to me). Will watch the next season whenever it comes out.

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten continued to be a treat for me throughout the season, and the ending didn't disappoint. Mahiru Best Girl of the season? Maybe. ;)

I loved Millenium Actress, so I thought I'd give Perfect Blue a shot. Not my jam. I guess I'm too simple minded to understand psychological thrillers....

Just found Tokyo Neon Scandal on bootleggers. Read through first chapter. It's pr0n, but as far as pr0n goes, at least it is sufficiently slice of life not some effed in the head out of this world scenarios or monsters or isekai or overpowered MC. So far.

Bungo Stray Dogs finished it's season strong, thought it wasn't my favorite season. I think S2 is best.

I also liked the way Tomo-chan ended, though on the whole, the series was just OK.

Looks like Bofuri is delayed again; truth is, I'm not sure if anyone will notice?
