What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
This season is shaping up to be more "normal" than the overabundant Winter season. As for me, for now, it's Fruits Basket S3, Moriarity S2, BnHA S5, To Your Eternity, Higehiro, Nagatoro, Nomad, Zombieland Saga S2, Slime Diaries, , maybe Shaman King.

Re: What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
Did watch the first ep of Shaman King 2021. Probably not going to be my cuppa; character designs did not age well.
Watched a couple of eps of Godzilla: S.P, and dropped it. I liked the female MC, but the rest of it was not good. Boring, even.
BnHA S5 is okay.
Dropped Jouran: The Princess of Snow and Blood after one ep. I watched it yesterday, and I can't remember much about it.
Don't know what to make of Mashiro no Oto yet. The music is good, but the rest of it is kinda whack, especially the end of ep1. I'll give it one more.
Added 86 to my list of stuff to watch. I remembered the LN got rave reviews, and I like the synopsis.

Re: What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
Finally, something really good!
Megalo Box: Nomad is even grittier and more forlorn than the first season. Looks and sounds great!
Fruits Basket: Final picks up where it left off from last season: an emotional trainwreck. But wait, it gets even more dramatic! Saki still best gitl!
Higehiro is cringy at first, but I think this is a story where the two MCs help the other redeem themselves. It's OK.

Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song is a keeper. Looks great, story is good at points, OK at others.
Slime Diaries is just filler, like 75% of S2......

To Your Eternity is very, very, very good. Definitely has the potential to be the best show this season!!
86 is also off to a good start, it's also an easy keeper.
Nagatoro isn't evryone's cuppa, but I liked the manga, and the anime's decent. Nagatoro's VA takes some getting used to, though.

Viz is releasing Ao no Hako online. It's pretty much the kind of thing I like, has a lot of potential!
Re: What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
I have been reading something called Hitoribocchi that I stumbled across recently. The first couple chapters I was like, hmm, the humor bears a little resemblance to Mitsuboshi Colors (but with middle school instead of elementary kids). Then at chapter 10 a new character (actually 2, twins ) was introduced that is the spitting image of Yui (once she gets to middle school). At that point I checked the author and duh, yes, it is the same one who wrote Mitsuboshi.
If you liked Colors I cannot say Hitoribocchi is quite as non-stop hilarious, but it is pretty cute, and does have a lot of funny moments. (I did finally burst out laughing at the teacher's antics during the fire drill.)
If you didn't like Colors, then you and I can never be friends anyway, so my review won't matter much either way.

Hi, Darrin! Didya know that there was an anime of Hitoribocchi that aired two years ago? Have not seen it(or Colors either, for that matter).
Here's a preview....

Re: What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
I did not know that, thanks. I remember taking a brief look at the colors anime when it was mentioned here, and agreeing with the general assessment here that it lacked a bit of spark or something, compared to the manga. Will keep an eye out for 'Bocchi, though, thanks. (Bit more story-driven so might be easier to transition to anime...)Yl33 D4 N00b wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 9:36 amHi, Darrin! Re: What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
I have been clicking on random things in Netfilx lately, often without bothering to even read the blurb first. The result is occasionally a bit disappointing, usually okay... and sometimes shockingly good.
"March Comes in Like a Lion" was in the last category. Not at all what I was expecting, and that remained true right up till the end: every time I thought I had a handle on the range they were covering, they would expand out into (or focus in on) something else entirely.
Nominally it's about a teenage shogi prodigy. Not knowing anything at all about shogi I didn't expect to get too invested, but would at least give it a shot in case it surprised me like Hi Score Girl. Turned out to be much more intense than anything I have seen lately. One minute I am giggling at the Seitokai no Ichizon level antics of the older shogi players; one I am weeping in sympathy for the hurdles and more often that not tragedies the various players have struggled through in pursuit of their art; the next I am triumphantly crowing "Ah ha! Tournament shogi does not have a 'touched piece' rule like tournament chess!" or "Ah ha! 'Black' is depicted at the bottom of the board, but the numbering is from the 'white' point of view!"; the next minute I am raging at the bullying the middle school girl in the protagonist's neighbor's family is undergoing.
Definitely not done justice by a blurb like "teenage shogi prodigy".

Re: What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
I'm surprised you've never heard of that show, Darrin. Maybe it's because I started watching that show when S1 began(and as I recall, I almost dropped it, as it was too depressing, thank God for the sisters), maybe I haven't realized this series still isn't that popular over the greater anime community. As for me, it's my all-time favorite series, period. Having kept up with the manga, if they ever do a S3, it will even be better than S2.
Re: What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
I've admitted before that I tend to be out of touch / behind the times on a lot of stuff, and come across event the good ones only haphazardly.Yl33 D4 N00b wrote: ↑Wed Apr 21, 2021 10:54 pmI'm surprised you've never heard of that show, Darrin.
Ooh excellent point, I should go look for that. Thanks!Having kept up with the manga

It's OK. The art is very impressionistic at times. Story moves kinda slow. I skipped a few chapters here and there, and didn't miss much.

Hot take time: most overrated Anime of Spring 2021: Mashiro no Oto. Take away the shamisen playing, and you get a half-baked high school club/coming of age story.

Re: What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
I love the final season of the remake of "Fruits Basket", tho they cut the budget and it isn't as pretty as the 1st 2 seasons. I also wonder if this new version is a little darker than the original manga and anime ( e.g. ep 6 and Tohru) or if my memory just wallpapered over the darker bits.

Re: What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
I have not read the original anime nor read the manga of Furuba, but it's really taken a darker turn. Was Kyo's rememberance at the end of ep. 6 of Kyoko(which everyone on other forums seems to think), or his mom?
Re: What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
But that would telling. It's Kyoko.Yl33 D4 N00b wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 4:45 pmI have not read the original anime nor read the manga of Furuba, but it's really taken a darker turn. Was Kyo's rememberance at the end of ep. 6 of Kyoko(which everyone on other forums seems to think), or his mom?
SpoilerShow
When he see the hat he partially remembers a suppressed memory. He was there when Toro's mom was hit but didn't go the her because he was afraid of the crowd and feels guilty because of it. He miss remembers what she actually said. It was more than "I'll never forgive you." He will eventually remember what she said.

I know it's not in genre
But it has more characters than a manga
and one of them just finished
and made a grown man cry
on video, twice
(the man with a story)
The video journey of Fiero*
Has concluded.
Now there is only
Binky**

and

All of which are coming to an end
(in no particular order)
What are we going to watch
when they're done?

Re: What are you watching/reading Q2 2021?
Higehiro, for the most part, had been walking on its' tightrope pretty well, until ep 9, where it turned into a tropey pile of doggie doo. Couldn't the author thought of anything original for the reason Sayu left home?
