What are you watching/reading Q3 2021?
To me, especially compared to the two previous seasons, Summer season 2021 is going to be pretty weak. I'm continuing BnHA and To Your Eternity, plus the second cour of Slime S2, the second seasons of Kobayashi Maid Dragon and My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!. Jahy, Aquatope, The Duke of Death and His Maid, and Uramichi Oniisan I'm also checking out, plus giving Sonny Boy a couple more eps.

I am watching Speed Grapher, which is from 16 years ago, lol. I probably posted about it on here when it was running real time.

Re: What are you watching/reading Q3 2021?
My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! S2 picks up where it left off last season; hopefully, the new characters and continuation of the story will give it more than the same story beats of last season. Another season of just the kids fawning over Bakarina will get old quick.
I had high hopes for The Duke of Death and His Maid, but so far, the story and show has felt empty to me. I'll drop it if it doesn't show me more.

Kageki Shoujo!! was not on my list to watch, but a heard a couple of decent reviews on it, so I gave it a shot. One of the MCs is a tall genki girl from a modest family(raised by her grandpa, even), so this one is at least worth 3.

Uramichi Oniisan had me belly laughing a couple of times, but overall, it was uneven, as some scenes fell flat.

Re: What are you watching/reading Q3 2021?
Slime 2.2 felt a lot like Slime Diaries, TBH; at least at this point, there's no dramatic tension, aside from the lads eating Shion's cooking.
KyoAni's back with Kobayashi's Maid Dragon S, and boy were they missed! It looks great; not sure about the new dragon yet, who does the character designs, anyway?
Aquatope is the newest 2 cour original from P.A. Works, and as expected, it sure looks pretty! Plot is a slow burn, so far, but it has time to flesh itself out.

Looks like quite a few of my readings either ended or are close to - UQ, Horimiya, Tonikaku Cawaii... But recently something cute popped up 5 Minutes at the convenience store ... Wonder whether it's going to keep up...

And Tonikawa, the author seems to be a bigger tease than Fred

Jahy had a seriously meh first ep; meh animation, meh writing, meh characters, even a meh OST.

Taksuki Fujimoto (of Chainsaw Man fame) has published a one shot honoring the KyoAni victims called Look Back. It is truly an amazing and heartfelt work. It can be read here on Vizmedia.

Sonny Boy certainly has Shingo Natsume's fingerprints on it; it looks like ACCA at times, also has a few Yuasa flavorings in it as well. Certainly this season's "trendy" anime.

Dropped The Great Jahy. All the characters are mostly one dimensional, and annoying AF.

The first two eps of Fena: Pirate Princess was just released on Crunchyroll, the rest of it will come out during the fall season. It looks decent, cartoony at times, mostly light watching, for sure.

Re: What are you watching/reading Q3 2021?
Halfway thru the season, and not too much to be hyped agout.
Kobayashi S2 is probably my favorite this season so far, and even that show plods along, using the same plotlines. Same for Bakarina, only that show isn't as good.
Do you like a lot more talk, and a lot less action,? Then Slime S2 Pt.2 is for you! Six episodes so far about how they are going to kick Claymore's ass! But they haven't done it yet! Maybe this week?
A show that has made a bit of a comeback(at least in my eyes) Is Kageki Shoujo! Fortunately, they've moved on from the overwrought melodrama, and gone on to growing the girls' characters.
Hey, P.A. Works has (so far) made a decent anime for a change! Aquatope isn't perfect, but not only does it look really good, the plot actually makes sense most of the time, the characters are good, too!
Don't care for the current arc of To Your Eternity. I'm pretty sure who is going to be the next one to die.
Hoping BNHA will pick things up with the Liberation Army arc, the Endeavour arc was getting old, and quickly.
I just dropped Uramichi Oniisan. The concept was cool, but it was variations of the same rapidly aging old joke. Not wasting my time on it anymore.
Kuro Maid doesn't have a lot going for it, but there's at least a progressing plot.

Came across a new manga(to me) Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible is, on the surface, a simple high school romcom, but the care the mangaka puts into the characters is very thurough. Very nice!

Finished Odd Taxi. One of the most well written animes I've ever watched. Even the ending was good(that cliffhanger though.... )

Re: What are you watching/reading Q3 2021?
There's been a lot of buzz about the donghua Link Click, so I watched it. Technically, it's very good, as is the OP, ED, and OST. However, I think the major plot point they introduced in the last few minutes of the last episode should've been done earlier in the season, or perhaps added another episode at the end to set up the announced second season better.
I also had issues with the whole Chinese "vibe". There's a "coldness" I got when watching parts of it. I know that's purely subjective on my part, and it's hard to explain. The color pallets are very subdued too, giving a dystopian feel. Even so, it's worth a watch; though, at least to me, it's not as amazing as a lot of people think.

The manga Dandadan just appeared on Viz, so I checked it out. Writing is OK(It's very profane at times), are is decent. Not sure if I'll keep reading it long term, we'll see.

Re: What are you watching/reading Q3 2021?
I have been on Free Guy at a theatre*cinema and it was, hmm.
+ fast paced
+ had lots of references, soooo packed, even if I did not like all of them, for all ages (though my better half said she almost fell asleep, my teens and my inner child enjoyed I almost waited for the virtual characters to start playing computer games at some point)
+ lead actress
+ plot
~ok lead good guy
lead bad guy
background good characters
background bad characters
visual effects
(There were manga and anime refs so it fits here too )

Part of me wants to drop Sonny Boy. It's getting more nonsensical as their "universe" expands. True, there's only 5 eps left, but will the ending have a payoff? Will there be a season 2?(Hope not)

Re: What are you watching/reading Q3 2021?
Went ahead and dropped Sonny Boy. I like cerebral anime, but this one is too obtuse.
Finished To Your Eternity. The last ep was as wonderful as the first, too bad a lot of the middle was not. Will still watch the second season.

Re: What are you watching/reading Q3 2021?
Want interesting takes on being out of society and then having returned?
Japanese Hero who returned remains the strongest in this world is the positive take,
Korean Hero has returned is the pessimistic, realistic take (although it's also skewed with the amount of negative commentary on Korean society, that leads to the plot...)
(It seems that the Korean webtoon artists have to pour a lot of negativity, like they are surrounded by it, before finding their art... Not the first occurrence of that, see also Wind Breaker, Solo Leveling, Free Draw (or Free Throw),Peerless Dad...)(there seems to be generally more negative beginnings and commentary in Korean works, so it seems)

Re: What are you watching/reading Q3 2021?
Kobayashi S2 to me has been heads above everything else this season, and the last two eps have been the best so far. I'll even say that the making of this anime has been therapy for the staff at KyoAni; you can see it in the writing and direction, as well as in the animation.
