Maybe she had the nine-tail sealed in her abdomen by ninja as part of a desperate attempt to save their village. :ninja:
Or...

The power of the (fox) king will isolate her... Megumi Li Sawataria commands you...

Could she possibly be POSSESSED by a nine-tail? The tails and ears are quite real.

It sort of sounds like we are channeling Naruto here.

I was kind of trying above to start a chain where everyone does their particular favorites... :( If it's exclusive to Naruto I guess I will have to sit this one out.

OR.... I could keep being a jerk. 8-)

Megumi Sawatari began as a substitute tail-reaper... but her kitsune pressure was far greater than any of them anticipated...

Well as I understand it, were a nine tail to exist and manifest and that kitsune become a bit miffed and go on tear it'd require the combined efforts of the TCPD, the Ninja AND the assistance of all available Magical Girls and any lesser kitsune (5~8 tails) to contain the damage.

Grandmother 8 tail went on a rampage when she was younger and once she settled down the Ninja (wisely) left her alone.

Power is exponential

EDIT: She got to be an 8 tail by becoming a tail-reaper BTW

Gonna need a shingami to exorcise THAT... :)

Hey, There Wasn't an arc with shinigami in MT yet, wasn't there?

Maybe her mother was frightened by a nine tailed fox.

Megumi was visiting her local Shinto shrine when she saw a fox spirit idol that had been knocked over and it's bow untied. She politely righted the statue and retied the bow. ;>

On her way home from Anna Miller's late one night, Megumi Sawatari is approached by visitors from another world, who are impressed by the potential of our species in general and Megumi in particular. They give her a device which will allow her to access fox-like powers, to be used in the defense the innocent and protection against wrongdoing.

Unfortunately, when she arrives home, she discovers that she has lost the instruction book the aliens provided with the device.

Okay, this one wasn't a manga, sorry.

Admit it though, Robert Culp would make an awesome Masamichi.

Before this wondering goes too far, all i want to say is that as far as Megumi knows, shes just a normal woman. She and her mom and her grandmother dont have any tails or ears or anything. In fact, the only real reason shes sorta in on the cousin loop is because grams worked for the brothel when she was younger as a taken in normie cousin (with a lot of attitude. imagine what she was like when she was younger :P) and the only girl there who wasn't (technically) a kitsune. If for some reason Megumi is showing latent kitsune-ness, she has no idea. The only thing she does know is that she totally suffers from the 'forever alone' curse that effects all kitsune girls - in fact, in her case its almsot comically bad :P

That said, what tails? :P
I haven't read any kitsune manga, what is this 'forever alone' curse? After reading the truncated side-comic where Yaku is being taken for a visit to Grams', and they keep talking about how they are monsters... and seeing how ALL the kitsune in these comics seem to be girls... do kitsune suck the souls out of men who like them? If so, is that an automatically on attribute?

No the kitsune don't suck the souls out of men. They have a lot of genetic problems that result in an imbalance in sex ratios between male and female kits.

Being able to hybridize with baseline humans helps so but with more of the male children being human rather than kitsune.

The forever alone curse is just what it sounds like, an inability to form stable relationships

BTW, deafness is one of the congenital defects that are common in kitsune.

Finally, tail hunting is a thing and it can serve to not only power up the killer who flayed the victim to steal the tail (as well as their spine) but also cures any congenital defects. Of course poor Ashe, being a one tail, doesn't have any of the magical talents required to bond with a stolen tail and is more likely to be a victim of such an atrocity. Being in the city that's under control of the TPCD and Ninja provides a great deal of safety in exchange for being very much a second class citizen. Prejudice and abuse are a small thing to deal with compared to dying screaming as you're skinned alive and having your spine ripped out, possibly by your own kin

One thing about the reality of monsters and other kinds of entities in MT there's a lot of differences between the standard mythologies that supposedly define the the nature of entities like kitsune. The reality is more the kind of things that can LEAD to these kinds of myths. The realities tend to be a little more mundane.

That said, the forever alone curse is not a part of standard mythology for kitsune lore, but it really is a undefined curse that most kitsune women suffer from but it's hard to say if it's a curse, it's part of behavioral nature of these girls, maybe it's part of the stigma that comes from being different they don't know.

Being a monster is no less complicated than being a mtyhotypical person :)

Or perhaps "mythotypical": not one of the classes of mythological being, hence the assumed standard human type. See also "mythophobic".

Okay, good to know that I'm not missing out. Megatokyo lore only ;)

I can see that if kitsune are prone to pulling out their physical and magical fangs, it might scare people off a little.

Interesting, that one. On the one hand, as an insult it should hit even closer to home for a foxgirl than for a human, which means it could (or should?) trigger a more aggressive reaction. On the other hand, *because* it hits closer to home, it is apparently easier to misunderstand it for a false observation rather than an insult, as has been the case in both instances we've seen it used toward a kitsune. You won't often see a human respond with "Are you blind? I'm a human, not a dog!"

Then again, maybe they do recognize it as the insult it is, but simply contest the observation out of principle.

Side track:

Maybe Megumi's tails (that just drew themselves, remember) only manifest themselves in places that are somehow 'allowed' by the family? She'd rather not talk about why the cousins bought The Foxhole, but let's see... maybe that is where she CAN be a fox, and nowhere else? The fox spirit has a mind of its own, and normally just sits inside and doesn't manifest itself. Explains why did Junpei have to jump to protect Megumi from being shot in the head. The fox just doesn't care. Because Megumi is just a vessel, a living place for the fox, and does not control its spirit. Most of the time, or actually all the time, Megumi doesn't even know its' there. Also no one in the MT universe can see that spirit (that'd need someone who travelled to the Other World and came back... maybe Miho? But she's not here now, and probably not about to manifest herself anywhere until 'tomorrow'.)
