I can see Yaku as a stand-in for Fred here. "Hmm, how can I do a good end for Miho without it seeming boring or trite." You can do eeeet!

I like how Yaku has Junpei's number here. At some point that relationship needs to change and there needs to be a little more respect and understanding. But hopefully that will come with time. Junpei is good people, and I think Yaku will grow to see that.

Is that next panel going to be Yaku jumping in surprise at Ninjagrrl? Or did she already sense her? I'm going to put my money on the second. I think Yaku is more powerful than has yet really been revealed.

It doesn't take kitsune magic for Yaku to be aware of Ninjagrrl's presence. She does have the heightened senses of a fox after all. :>

Ha, Ninjagrrll is now officially a trope :)

(Ooh... so it wasn't Miho yelling at Yakugashi... )
Ninjagrrl, like daeus ex machina, in a role of the mocking gallery. Sweet.

But the story Kimiko and Piro are working on... That will become now detached from it's Anchor, freely floating...
What if Stories can reattach themselves to whatever fresh and unassigned springs up in reality?

Maybe it will have to, to sound credible again... attach itself to something like new and just-created New Life... through the Actor and the Artist retelling the Story to the Fanbase, It will have new Life and so will They have ?

Like, see... Piro and Kimiko will be working on the Story. Miho will have her own, whatever it is, it won't be this Story any more. So game production might become problematic until Kimiko and Piro actually DO create new Life... the Story will attach and become credible again, the game will get released and...

That would be a pretty sad, sad... Story and Ending. They may be happy unit, and famous for a while, and then what... the Story will kick in and destroy them, crippling the New Life, like it almost did with Miho ?

(edit : now finished editing)

Oh Junpei.... love is going to have so many things to teach you... things you thought you knew something about when in reality, you know nothing.

On more cheerful note, we have a Chekhov Sniper Rifle from [312] still unused (play must involve Miho, Piro, Largo and Ping to satisfy trigger condition) :)

I don't think Yaku has much of respect for her elders. Nor do I think that as a 13 years old, she has really much of a decent way for creating a respectable story.
On that note, if she does try to write a new story for Miho, I would think it best if Miho at least had some input, or collaboration in writing it.

I do like the nonchalant way she tossed off, "Well, that's part of the challenge!". Sadly enough though she's correct since I can see some other very strong barriers to this little exercise in reality manipulation. As can we all with a little thought. For one thing, no matter how badly your life seemed to suck how happy would you really be to be "rewritten" by someone you barely know? For another, how far can the story deviate from the original and still have the support of the readers who we are expecting to change reality by their belief? If those aren't enough questions for us to consider I'm sure we can come up with some more. ^_^

Well...

If you want a happy story with nothing bad happening that gets a lot of fans there is always the wish fulfillment story.

Though maybe they can include the trials and tribulation Miho has already experienced, and then just add a happy ending. Lots of fans for those types of stories (since that's the most common type of story).

Yay! Comic!

(apologies again to Paarfi.)

And, yeah, I know -- it's not exactly profound commentary. :D

Thanks, Fred.

Disney was built on wish fulfillment. In the first version of "Sleeping Beauty" known as "Sun, Moon and Talia" by Giambattista Basile, the sleeping beauty is raped by a passing king and gives birth to two children while she is still asleep. In the original tale of "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen, the mermaid's footsteps were agony to her, akin to walking on sharp swords, but she danced for the prince anyway. When he falls for another, instead of killing him to save herself, she dies and dissolves into foam. In a version of "Beauty and the Beast" named "little Broomstick" by German folklore collector Ludwig Bechstein, the beast became the beauty's sleeping companion, cuddling and kissing her. Her stepsisters drowned her in a bath, and were later turned into stone columns.

So, all that is needed is to re-imagine Miho's story with a Disney ending.

So basically Yaku needs to change the story's rating from M to PG...
Or even to lower age group?
Makes sense, for the new fanbase to be educated early... Then they can find out the original when they are older but they will always like the children's version better... and will remain fans forever...

Until next generation of fans demand something Roald Dahl style...

I just hope the old fanbase won't get attached to Piro and Kimiko, or to someone they may ever create....

Sorry, but I hope Fred has one of the "elders" in the the room to tell the brat to STFU. Junpei should've never brought her there in the first place.

Are you going to explode with rage if we ever see Miho happy? Please livestream it if so. I’ve never seen a bear spontaneously combust before.

Getting two comics in such quick succession made my crappy week (guinea pig recovering from surgery) slightly better. Thanks, Fred!

Yakugashi is certainly a force to be reckoned with, Grandma is a hilarious Greek chorus/peanut gallery, and Miho once again gets no say in her own destiny if those two get their way. Not going to lie, I’m slightly annoyed at them for being so high-handed about it.

Junpei is freaking adorable. Mugi’s reaction when she wakes up to him sitting there is one kitsune comic that I’m actually looking forward to.

Mugi: ugh... Ninjaboi? Where's my daughter?
Junpei: I left her alone with Miho and my relative/clan who is trying to murder Miho so I can be here watching you as you sleep.
Mugi: ... :?

Heh! This means he has FEELINGS for Miho ;) meaning it's not indifferent to him what happens...

OMG YOU ARE JUST LIKE THE REST OF US TWB...

It's pretty certain he can do it. It's Yaku that I'm a bit doubtful about as to her intent and wishes and ideas of what's possible or not, versus what we think we know about the forces of idea and emotion. Then again, this isn't an already involved inexperienced magical girl captive to the notions of love, but somebody who hasn't previously been a participant, is non-human-ish, and is a creator of things. If anyone can "fix" things by some method like that, why not her.
I like how Yaku has Junpei's number here.
I took it not as she was going to phone him on a device. But that she would call for him. Like Mugi did.
Is that next panel going to be Yaku jumping in surprise at Ninjagrrl?
If she didn't here, likely not. Yaku perhaps as aware of somebody else there who dressed Miho up as Junpei seemed he might be. It's also possible she was in view to the others, but not to us, earlier.
I think Yaku is more powerful than has yet really been revealed.
Yeah we never know around here do we.

They've already to some extent been playing a lot, with or without the skill with which such things that fit are weaved into it later. Whatever difference there might be between planning something ahead, and fitting it in later as if it had been planned all along. Or not. But that's just another thing where what's believed is more powerful than the unimportant boring facts. ;)

Not least of which is how "the story" seems to adjust itself to most anything, and has no signs of running out of ideas or power. :D
For one thing, no matter how badly your life seemed to suck how happy would you really be to be "rewritten" by someone you barely know?
For her part, Tohya seems to roll with everything. Maybe from a notion nothing can change anything, or perhaps because she has more control over the general flow than some believe she does. (If she's the one who consciously or unconsciously sets the big picture parts into motion, how it happens wouldn't perhaps be important to her.)
For another, how far can the story deviate from the original and still have the support of the readers who we are expecting to change reality by their belief?
It might seem that the way it operates, as long as there's that feeling, the specifics aren't too important. Or so we've been to some extent informed from time to time.

This is getting kind of meta. So is Fred admitting defeat and is getting one of his characters to write Miho's story now? And her sending Jumpi back to be with mom. I think she knows there is a developing relationship between the two, and she is trying to help it along.

Junpei is all sorts of wrapped up in the current stories. Reason enough to not want him there. More, is an adult and authority figure of sorts etc. And also, nice if mom has somebody there she knows rather than an empty room should she become conscious.
