[1598] IT DID NOT GO WELL

Fred has posted the new comic to his Patreon. He'll post it to the main site and elsewhere probably tomorrow.

Largo is right.
Much danger of fratricide and destructive splash damage.
Let the women handle it and retreat for beer fortification... they will call or text if male assistance is needed or desired.

I'm torn. Part of me is distressed at how unhappy Megumi is - she doesn't seem the type to show weakness to her friends. And part is rather pleased at the fact that not even a tiny part of the building is on fire. Yet. Tears are a safer outlet than rage for a Kitsune.

Also, how is Largo doing this? He doesn't speak Japanese, I'm pretty sure he has zero interest in mythology, and yet he's not only recognizing that a threat exists, and how to see the physical manifestation of it, but pinpointing the most likely attacks.

I really feel for Megumi and I’m glad for her that she finally gets some understanding… though it’s rather frustrating she felt forced to share it like this…

Whoa, I just LOVE Ashe’s eyes and expression in the last panel.

…but I’ve missed her changing into a shirt with a different logo than the one she was wearing in the previous comic.
I mean, Zildjian and Pearl are both in the same business, but… =?

Or… I’m just missing something — that happens a lot, so it would not surprise me if I did. =)

Thanks for this new post, Fred! =)

Largo has likely played League of Legends.

...Megumi conjured that phone call, didn't she? Because she wanted a "happy ending" for glasses guy. Well she's wrong, he didn't need to hear from his fiancé. Certainly not at that moment. She needs to start believing she's good for people before she starts magicking them *towards* her rather than *away* from her.

Good, good, Largo finished his tail-count. "Red alert! Red alert! We have an unhappy demi-god in the room!"

"But I didn't see him leave ... "

One line, endless unjustified speculation.

1) He never existed, he was something Megumi conjured out of thin air and then conjured him away.

2) He was no longer important in Megumi's story, or the story of any other character, so he wasn't tracked (probably the most likely, given MT).

3) Megumi rage-vaporized him on his way out the door.

I think this one line has as much possibilities as the rest of the comic.

Or that could be just explaining why Grandma didn't know that Megumi and Paisen's night had ended early. Fred has certainly been known to put things to more than one purpose though, so maybe you're right.

(12) He actually didn't leave because he noticed that Megumi is actually nice and his Ex might just be playing with him. But he also didn't have the courage to go back into the room.

So, he's still around somewhere.

Those who think Paisen might be still 'around' probably never had a girlfriend ;)

(In alternative explanation of Megatokyo world: it's a game, he ...

But let's start with the other clues:

Grandma is a character played by a real player (she can't divide attention beyond dealing with Ping, something an AI / scripted avatar would have been able to do)

Megumi also is a player and maybe Paisen too, they just opened a dating app/minigame, and it matched them... And he actually went home and deleted the app, that's why he's 'vanished')

Btw, A comic in 20 days apart - not bad, feels like speeding up, eh?

Joke aside - the page is beautiful, thank you Fred :)

Those who had a girlfriend learned the hard way that you should not always do what your girlfriend says

Those who progress beyond girlfriend stage learn the hard way that the promise of doing everything for her… doesn't fall on deaf ears ;) but also the other side, learns to not exercise that card too blatantly :)

In my theory Paisen and his fiance will go to Anna Miller's and see Megumi there. The fiance will then learn the truth, fall to her knees and genuflect before Megumi and offer Paisen to Megumi as she realizes that she is unworthy of a man who has been touched by a Goddess.

On another level, I wonder if Paisen's fiance (Nagatoro, mind you) wasn't somehow imprisoned by the ninja and only escaped because Junpei beat his family up...

On another level, kinda like Fred's ninjas, to have a prison for stories / characters that go out of control.

On another level it's like, a cool trolling of Nagatoro release schedule ?

Which is why I didn't call it out. Insufficient data, no way to fashion a reasonable hypothesis. Although your first option is very interesting.

That's both an intriguing and very upsetting option. With this power level, if she's determined to push people away, there's no stopping her.

This could only have been written by someone who reads the manga, because nobody else would realize how improbably funny the idea is.

Good lord. Y'all accuse me of erroneous speculation. 🙄😒

So, this was perhaps a missed opportunity, or it was simply bad luck. Easy explanation. "Never attribute to malice what can be attributed to stupidity."

The mystery of how Megumi got the nine tails still remains. The possibility of having hidden them away for so long that she forgot she had 'em was definitely discounted by Grandma's statements. Obvious to all (who had been reading this so far) was she didn't get 'em after having sex. So, it's possible that Grandma was truly adopted, and we are no closer to the answer of how Megumi got her tails than we were before.

Oh, sure, it may have just appeared out of thin air, but it can't be completely random. "God does not play dice with the world." You have to wonder what the conditions were at the time of the appearance of the tails.

He's a gamer. What gamer does not do monster research once he's figured out what sort of world he's adventuring in? 🙂

Does foxgirl hair magically style itself? That is the most orderly bedhead pleats on a frantically frazzled woman I have ever seen in this bear's life.

On another note,
Megumi's tale is kinda first time I recall someone in the comic, recall and retell their proceedings exactly as it happened without hiding or glossing over or forgetting anything.

I'm more surprised that everyone apart from Largo is either ignoring or making jokes about the nine tail problem and her sudden transformation.

Maybe that happens regularly among the Kitsune? But I doubt that.

In terms of story, for everybody *except Megumi and Largo* the nine-tail thing doesn't matter very much. The fact that Megumi had a really bad night last night is much more important to Kimiko and Piro's story, for instance. Megumi is their friend and they care a lot about their friends. Largo is constantly evaluating the world in terms of RPG treat, and Megumi just went way up on that.

Having a nine-tail among them is surely not common for Kitsune? Unless of course they already knew or suspected.

And for Piro, Kimiko and Erika it should also be somehow surprising that her friend suddenly has tails, even though Kimiko loved them 😅
