So, Pinko is sending "gentleman caller" alternate plan tonight for what purpose?
To practice her telephone pole-wielding skills?

  • Pinko tries to help with machine logic and sows great confusion.
I am only about 50/50 confident on the "what" here, and not at all ready to speculate on "why" Ping is doing whatever she's up to.

That being said, I would give really good odds that whatever it is will definitely end up in that last category of yours there.

I just had a thought. Could it be Junko's dad?
No, Junko wouldn't have called her dad "a gentleman", "intelligent", or "mature". Same thing disqualifies Largo.
But Yanagisawa could fit the bill. :)

Y'know, I'm trying to think of a way, any way, that what Pinko is trying to do can possibly end well and for the life of me I can't. ^_^;

Wouldn't it be a kicker if the mature gentleman was Dom? I don't think it could be Ed. We haven't seen them for a while now.

Well I thought about this...

It is Ed who seems to have a 'mission' to liquidate Ping. Dom's not in 'console' business - he wants the 'real' actresses (note how he doesn't even start talking to Miho about any such business).

Dom has been under a front of a building just the previous day. Ed had been unseen since CoE (one day before that), should have grown back in a tank by now - and we have seen what face they gave him previously. So either he 'befriended' Junko previously, or the 'friend' Junko thinks she'll meet, had a little 'accident' (this we have seen before too).

(That above could also be the reason, why the 'friend' would be someone we haven't seen before :) )

I'm not sure why Ed or Dom would have "friended" Junko in that way. Ed is after Ping, but it was only yesterday(?) that Ping and Junko got this tight, and Junko's "That's Today?" kind of implies that it wasn't just yesterday that they set up the date. For Dom, I can see even less reason. Junko isn't an idol or really anyone who would be of interest by herself to Sega. About the only real scenario I can think of for Ed or Dom is that Junko is Mr Ibara's daughter, and Mr Ibara is the competition to Dom and Ed. Still doesn't seem their style though.

I think it's probably someone else. By the Law of Economy of Characters, you'd think it would be someone we already know. But I'm struggling to make any of them fit. Fred isn't above introducing new characters this far into the story (witness Ashe, Grandma, and NinjaGrrl just recently), so maybe it is someone new.

So... some thoughts.

First of all, this explains Junko a lot better. I always wondered why she would get involved in compensated dating, but if she really is attracted to older men then it starts to make more sense. It suggests that she started dating older men, and had enough bad experiences to become cynical, and to start taking advantage of them for their money - but also that she has a part of her that still longs for her fantasy of a mature gentleman taking care of her.

Second, I noticed that Ping is not allowed to intervene to block Junko's romance, even if she disapproves.

See: https://megatokyo.com/strip/1172

Ping says that she is hard coded to never come between a girl and the boy she likes. If that's literal, and I suspect it is, then there is no chance that Ping is intervening to try and block Junko from a bad relationship.

I suppose it's possible if Ping thinks that Junko doesn't actually like this guy, but that isn't the impression Junko is giving, nor is there any reason to think that Ping is misunderstanding that.

Therefor I conclude that Ping can only be interfering to try and help Junko's relationship bloom. Thus it's very doubtful that Ping is going to try and masquerade as Junko. More likely she's changing things up and will inform Junko of the new meetup location when she gets out of the shower.

Additionally, since Ping's explicitly programmed to help socially awkward boys form successful romantic relationships, then I have to believe that she does have appropriate ideas about what a "good date" would be. (In fact, cynically speaking, Ping might actually have some specific instructions for how to help a man paying for an escort to try and turn that into a real relationship). My suspicion is that Ping is going to switch the date from something focused on getting money from the older man (ie a shopping date, or a nice restaurant) to something more romantic, like a walk through a park, or some other such thing.

There are lots of ways this could go wrong. The most obvious one being that while Junko likes this guy, he might actually be a creep. Let's be honest, though there are possible exceptions, an older man dating a high school girl implies a predatory relationship. Especially if it's some form of compensated dating.

Of course, if this backfires (by say, scaring off the guy who doesn't want a real relationship) then this could actually be a very good thing for Junko. But at the same time trigger another existential crisis for Ping since in her view she will have once again violated her programming to not get between a girl and a guy she likes.

PS

Here is the page with Junko impling she has been sexually assaulted before. It wasn't to Largo, it was to Ping.

@Sackett - it could be... For the sake of PG rating let's say it could be just that. (Just saying, in RL, there are more cynical situations on either side of such relationship.... Just sayin.)

@Paarfi: in case no one asked this before, would the ninja girl be related to Natsuki, as in (448) ? Super secret stage ninja :)

If Ping doesn’t intend to masquerade as Junko, why would she actively use her chameleon skills to replicate Junko’s hair and send a message to her paramour?

Remember how the first time Ping changed appearances (after she failed at “playing” with Piro way back when), she didn’t realize why her clothes didn’t fit or that her hair had changed color? This seems to be the first time she’s not only aware of the changes in her body as they’re happening, but it looks like she’s just figured out that she can manipulate them at will. The machine evolves.

Ping noted that Junko has “a lot of users” in the previous comic. She also presumably understands that Junko is attached to this particular patron. Since she’s hard coded not to ruin other girls’ relationships and she seems to care about Junko, we can infer that whatever Ping is trying to do here is intended to help her friend out.

I think people are reading too much into the last three panels.

The way I interpret it is this:

Ping realizes Junko likes this boy. Ping wants to help Junko with her romance. Ping is not programmed for "best friend" advice to a girlfriend, instead she is programmed to take on the role of a girl and then training boys on how to properly pursue a romance.

So Ping decides to work around this limitation by putting herself mentally in Junko's place, and then access her programming to decide what the appropriate date activity would be. This is the second to last panel where Ping pulls her hair into Junko's pigtails. I think that's just a visual clue that Ping is trying to think "what should Junko want?"

Then in the last panel, where Ping text messages the date to go someplace different, Ping's hair mutates to Junko's color and style. This isn't a conscious decision, it's just a subconscious reaction to her having put herself "in the game" mentally when thinking about what Junko should want.

That would make more sense than Ping suddenly being able to control her mutations when she hasn't been able to in the past, and indeed, has just now been struggling with her inability to control her hair and weight gain.

I doubt very much that Sony had social training in mind for anyone's benefit. She may be a non-H model, but she's still made to market to male fantasy. To Otaku fantasy.

Uh... it's been explicitly stated that Ping's purpose was to provide otaku males with a practice girlfriend, who would help them move on to develop relationships with real girls.

This has been referenced multiple times, there is no doubt about this aspect of Ping's programming.

It's... hmm this just dawned on me, this kind of had happened before... just re-read [661]... it's against Ping's programming to interfere in real/serious relationships... unless she thinks, it's not real/not serious enough (yet) ?

Isn't this going to be a meeting with the l33t m4st3r? He's older, Junko likes and admires him...
