I thought the matriarch was a great grandmother. Perhaps I am wrong. Is she Mugi's grandmother or great grandmother?
Re: [1591] there's no way...
She's Mugi's grandma and Yaku's great-grandma.

But is she Megumi's grandmother?
Re: [1591] there's no way...
I don't believe that has been clearly established.

Right now I think Megumi is questioning her lineage as well. Previously supplied information may be in error. Hopefully not lies, that seems like an unsafe thing to lie about to a brand new nine-tail.

I'm for one hoping that Grand Ma will be able to offer some extremely bawdy explanation as to what might have gone on that could have resulted in Megumi being a Fabled Creature

Re: [1591] there's no way...
This is just me trying to consolidate what I personally remember about Megumi’s family tree- please correct me if I’m mistaken!
Lineage-wise, the grandma Megumi grew up with (I’ll call her sex grandma) was “adopted into the family” at some point, and is Megumi’s legit maternal grandmother based on her earlier comments in [1543]. https://megatokyo.com/strip/1543 We have no idea who Megumi’s maternal grandfather is (hence Vis’s theory that sex grandpa is a powerful kitsune). We also don’t know why sex grandma was adopted into the family in the first place.
We can also infer that Mugi spent at least some time living with either sex grandma or Megumi’s parents after Mugi’s mother threw her out for getting pregnant as a teenager, which is why Mugi and Megumi have a contentious but sisterly relationship. We don’t know exactly how familiar Megumi is with the extended kitsune family beyond Mugi/Yaku/whoever works at The Fox Hole, because she has no direct relation (that we know of) to tails grandma.
There’s no mention in the comic about Megumi’s mother being a kitsune, but it seems unlikely given that Megumi had no idea where her new ears and tails could possibly have come from. We also don’t know anything about Megumi’s father or her paternal grandparents at all, unless I missed something that wasn’t discussed in the comics.
So there are a few ways Megumi could have inherited kitsune blood: grandfather, father, or sex grandma not being quite honest about her origins. At any rate, sex grandma has a lot of explaining to do.

Re: [1591] there's no way...
I wondering if grandma got adopted into the family for the purpose of taking care of Megumi. Nine-tail foxgirl infant is born, and great-grandma eight-tail sees a problem. With the way the TPCD monitors and freaks out over idols [597] and teenage magical girls [1109], who knows what they and Stability would do about a teenage (or toddler) nine-tail. At the minimum, you'd think it would be intrusive surveillance that the clan would not be happy about, and at worst they might decide to "take care of the problem" [717]. Not to mention that a nine-tail might be eventually cause an intraclan power struggle.
So foxgirl magic hides the baby's tails; grandma adopts the infant and is in turn adopted into the clan with a job at a clan hotel where they can keep an eye on them both; and Megumi grows up knowing that her ancestors are normal non-foxgirl humans so there's no possible way she could be a foxgirl herself. And it all worked fine, until the hiding magic failed for some unknown reason.

Re: [1591] there's no way...
Have Megumi’s actual parents been discussed at all? The comic has only addressed who her maternal grandparents are (an anonymous john and a prostitute who was adopted into the clan for some as yet unknown reason). We have no idea who her parents are or what happened to them. For all we know, they could still be around and just not mentioned in the comic yet!
So obviously at least one parent must have had kitsune blood, or else Megumi wouldn’t be one. My guess is that her father is the culprit. That would fit nicely with paarfi’s theory, if Megumi’s parents peaced out/died and sex grandma was left holding the baby.
Argh. This is going to drive me nuts until the next comic comes out. It’s already been two weeks, so hopefully we’ll get a new one soon.
Edit: I have no idea why I thought Invisigoth’s theory involved Megumi’s grandfather rather than her father. Brain fart.

Maldrul may or may not be all he claims, but I'm pretty sure he's not a hyena.

Re: [1591] there's no way...
Correct me if I am wrong, but that is not a Hyena. That is an African Wild Dog. Hmmm, "looks at Maldrul". I wonder....

Re: [1591] there's no way...
That's an African Wild Dog, one of my alt identities is Dog Soldier. The AWD is one of my favorite critters in the whole world.
Re: [1591] there's no way...
The AWD does have the same energy as Sturmvoraus' death glare, from Monday's (3/8/21) Girl Genius...
Re: [1591] there's no way...
Ya, I saw that too. Three things came to my mind when I saw that glare. A) He's gotten up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. B) He knows damn well what Rakethorn and Princess Neena are up to. C) The muse and the cat are in for a rough time.
Now as for Invisigoth, I would suggest if that AWD glare is any indication, Maldrul had better be treading lightly! Some young male kitsune's tail might get chomped off!
Re: [1591] there's no way...
I would take it as a bit of B) and a bit of C). He knows what's up, is studiously not noticing her advances, and would rather the cat and the muse not point it out let's plans and diplomatic negotiations be disrupted.
I'm pretty sure he's going to end up with Agatha, and Seffi is going to get ahold of her Wulfenbach.
