I hope Megumi's life improves. She deserves it.

Maybe get back with that guy from last chapter...
He was a Catalyst. You don’t stay with those, you encounter them and move on (hopefully toward your goal). If you don’t *know* what your goal is then you may find out from encountering a Catalyst.

Or a Foxalyst, in this case. (Sorry, I’ll get my coat)
Yea, verily: Who is that, running on the steppes! It is Sax, clutching buzzsaw hand extensions! He howls homicidally:
"I'm seriously going to pound you into the fast lane!!!"

Oh, yeah, I wrote Ping some backstory once.

becoming a nine-tail is something that doesn't actually require kitsune genes
Maybe the guy last night managed to rub off on her, enough for her to grow tails....?
Y'know, kissing was already involved, and shirts were already off.

How magical was /that/ guy...?

(P.S. thank you for the page, Fred :) )
If he really is based on the protagonist from the manga "Please don't bully me, Nagatoro!" then he is in fact anti-magic. In Warhammer 40K terms, he's a Blank - his very presence would cause magic to fail because he is the epitome of the mundane.

Or it could be like the asymptomatic case of the-virus-that-shall-not-be-named? You can carry it and spread but not get any symptoms...

It seems very unfair that Ashe is deaf in spite of having four ears though. Maybe it’s psychological? Also she’s very cute - I would have noticed that tail.
Ashe doesn't have 4 ears....

Megumi was already manifesting phantom tails and ears before she and Ashe even went out to the bar though.

At this point, we really have insufficient data to develop any good theories about how or why this happened to her. We have a clue or two, but that's it. Does anyone remember when she first manifested the phantom parts? That might be useful as a starting point.

Hopefully Grandma can help. Watching her have a panic attack is painful.

I'd wager it's not Grandma that needs to do some explaining. It's GREAT Grandma that needs to do the explaining. She's the one that clearly has the power to cover Megumi's "condition" up.

I'm pretty sure it was in the last panel of [1544].

That's what I thought. So there was no manifestation while she thought Kimiko was dead back in 1469 and 1470, getting shot at or playing demolition derby with TPCD mechs in 1478 and 1481, or her crushing despair over Junpei in 1482. It starts after the interlude with Komu's eight-tail mom, she delivers K+P to her hotel, Yaku and Miho face off against the Ninja clan...and Megumi agrees to help Ping with her little problem.

Is this transformation a reward for her bravery? If so, who's bestowing it?

-Yaku's grandmother? She certainly seems to be off enough to do something like this without warning the recipient first, but if kitsune are so desperate for power that they'll steal each other's tails, why give it to someone else?

-The city itself? Why? Why toss another destabilizing element into the mix? Yeah, I had the idea of the nine-tails as a counterbalance to the magical girls, but dumping a mantle of power onto someone with no experience and zero warning - thus traumatizing them into a major panic attack - is not a great way to create someone able to use this kind of power with reasoned care. Toss around trucks and medium sized buildings, maybe.

-The TPCD? Nope, they're having the vapors at mundane 'monsters' getting media exposure. Like any police organization, they're about order and control, and the Kitsune literally embody chaos.

I dunno. This is clearly a surprise to everyone so far. Maybe grandma will have some answers.

Yay, comic!

Poor Megumi. She’s in full meltdown. I hope Grandma can calm her down and provide some information.

The TCPD wouldn’t really treat a 9-tailed kitsune like a 3rd class citizen, would they? Maybe with Megumi around to advocate for her cousins, things will improve for them overall.

They will probably round up the guy from the bar and deliver him to her doorstep to appease her

Guy: "B-But I already have a fiance!"
TCPD: "It's for the sake of mankind!"
Guy: "But we're getting married!"
TCPD: "We'll make an exception for you."
Guy: "But I don't love her!"
TCPD: "Not so loud! For god's sake don't tell her that!"
Guy: "But my fiance is very jealous!"
TCPD: "We... could take care of that problem."

More like a live nuclear warhead in the downtown hotels district...

Problem is, she does not want to be a live nuke; she just wants to get a boyfriend and hang out with her friends like normal people do. I don't think she'll get the chance, though.

Like the main character in Wild Arms 2; by the end he just wants to be able to settle down with his girl, raise a family and make an honest living. He goes to the war to make sure no-one has to do that again.

Hey, I also picked you because you're guaranteed to pick up the chicks in that suit. But nobody looks innocent in a suit.

So in short the guy megumi was with is essentially a LEVEL 0 from the railgun anime universe With Imagine-breaker.

Well she could have the tails surgically removed and the ears also removed.

Can you surgically remove something can appear and disappear at will? I'm guessing they aren't "real" in the sense that they'd be removable by surgery. Grandma, on the other hand, has form for stealing tails, doesn't she? So they *can* be removed.

As a 9-tails, she’s powerful enough to hide her ears and tails magically. She just has to learn how, first. If I remember correctly, 3 tails is the minimum power level to do that in the MT universe, but I could be wrong.

Side note: when did Megumi lose her shoes? Was she planning to leave the hotel without them?

Apparently she de-shoed here [1579]. She just never put them back on when she got dressed in the morning, maybe because she knew she was just going to check on PxK for now.

Yeah..usually stealing a tail involves said fox losing their life because their spine is attached.

I still think the tails aren't real enough to survive on a plaque on the wall.
