I'm pretty sure that crying your eyes out alone in a bed in a love hotel doesn't meet anyone's definition of winning conditions

Oh, come on, she has a loving family. She is healthy and otherwise fine.

She is far from being alone.
I know of people who got into that sort of mindset and no matter what I or others tried to do, we couldn't convince them that there were good things to look forward to. THIS is why I didn't want Megumi to manifest under these conditions. It's bad. Really bad.
Of course there are such people. Which is exactly why I wrote that some people do not realize how much they in fact have.

OMG! Are you trying to channel Largo? That's almost exactly how he would view the situation. I don't think Megumi would see things that way though. I'm pretty sure that she would rip Largo's throat out if he tried to tell her that stuff.
If this was the first level game/SIM/story then I'd have agreed with you ;) but since the MT game is what the unMod characters play, when they're not doing their own stuff... You see where I am going with this? :)

9!
9 TAILS OF THE FOX!
AH! AH! AH! AH! AH! AAAAAAHHHHHH!!

Sorry for channeling my internal Count from Sesame Street.
I actually find this quite alarming in story line.
Humor is and always has been my go to coping mechanism...

I wonder if she knows what she is?
That was the first question that came to my mind when I got the patreon email last night. There are important different ways the story could go depending on the answer.

Fred, many congratulations on twenty great years and thirteen amazing chapters. Many thanks as well.

Yanno, in my heart of hearts, I was hoping this would never happen. Megumi deserved a lot better than this...

....then again, I like happy endings more than sad endings. 😒

So, I'm a bit of a romantic. So sue me. πŸ˜›

Now, how, exactly, did she hide those nine tails?

SpoilerShow
9 tails, she has 9 tails

BTW, Megumi made her first appearance in strip 32, shortly after Erika (strip 23) and Kimiko (strip 24)
I agree.
Poor Magumi has no luck. :(
Glasses guy, ran pretty fast back to his ex. One wonders if he had an inkling of what Magumi was?

well I think she hid her form cause of the story the grandma fox told about how tribal war over stealing tails of foxes born with multiple tails cause the more tails you had the more power. with her having 9 maybe that made her uber powerful and cause of her status maybe shes a secret from other fox tribes attacking. also she might want true love and not have other fox males courting over her for just her power so she tried finding it in human form but constantly keeps getting heartbroken. so now she doesn't know where she belongs which is leading her to this sadness and despair.

Are there foxboys in Megatokyo, anyone? We haven't seen any.

Is there a definitive statement (or definitive until Fred has a Better Idea, anyway)?

I definitely remember someone (Fred himself?) posting that there was no way Megumi could actually be a nine-tails because it would significantly affect future aspects of the story. Maybe she just doesn’t realize what she is until it becomes relevant at some point?

And...wait...that’s the end of the chapter?
If this is true, then it fits with the title of the chapter: "Broken". Chapter 12 began and ended with two characters becoming "broken". Miho can no longer die of her condition, which breaks her story. (and which has also resulted in a lot of other breakage) Megumi is now on a completely different path, though the ramifications of her being a nine tail Kitsune will depend on whatever a nine tail actually is and what they can do. Fred has discussed this in chat and perhaps in the forum but hasn't gone into detail in the comic, which means that it shouldn't be considered canon yet. If, however, certain things that he's said in Twitch chat are indeed canonical, then the combination of her powers and her emotional state could break reality itself. Hot time in the old town tonight.
MAybe.... Glasses guy comes back, and she accidentally kills him, finally breaking the cutie in a epic heel turn with world ending consequences?

Yep. Bet she didn't steal em, either. That also explains how/why she looks like a normal human even though her family.. isn't.

Yeah she's a totally natural 9 tail. It's lucky for the city that Junpei snagged the bullet that would have hit her as she'd very likely have manifest then and having that come out in a gun battle would have ended the chapter and the story much sooner

Perhaps she does. And many are destroyed that need non-destroyedness. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out being destroyed in judgement.

If Megumi has fully manfested and her future mindset reflects her emotions during the manifestation, I suspect you'll be proven wrong on this one, Teddy. Depending on the source, the power range of a 9T* can be pretty terrifying, and she's got no experience in controlling them. They may need Miho's help to keep Megumi from wrecking MT in this mental state. I very much hope not, but I can't recall a single good piece of luck she's had up to now. And everyone has a breaking point.

* I am hereby declaring that '9T' will be the short version of 'nine-tail' in the forums hereafter. Because shortcut.

Some of the legends say a that when a kitsune grows a ninth tail, their hair changes color to silver, white or gold. Would be an interesting look for her.

Shouldn't that be T9? I mean, if she goes on a rampage wouldn’t that make her a Tailminator?
