Nier Automata

Post by DaRk_KnIgHt » Wed Jun 14, 2017 1:39 am

Just finished this. Anybody played this? I want to talk to people about how sad I am because of this game. And how horrible this game is, as in horrible things happen to everybody and the world is a horrible place sort of horrible, not the quality of the game.

Gameplay does get a bit repetitive and some of the health recovery chips makes you nigh immortal as long as you exercise a bit of common sense. If you've played Bayonetta - it's basically the same game under different trappings. Even the controls are really similar. I was somewhat reminded of Kingdom Hearts - I haven't played a JRPG style open world slashy dee doo since that.

They definitely do a lot of to stretch out that same world. There's ultimately not that many unique areas and you do revisit them and slap very similar enemies about as you go in between the main story, sidequests and the multiple playthroughs.

But I'm a sucker for existential type stuff and thick melodrama, and that kept me going through. The soundtrack is also really good and helps the whole atmosphere. So despite the repetition, I wanted to know what happens next. The game being super easy helped me just breeze through it.

You basically need to start a new game+ the third time wherein surprise, the second half of the game was hidden here! The first two playthroughs are just the two perspectives of the two main characters through the same thing. You do keep sidequest progress thankfully so you don't need to repeat absolutely everything, along with your levels, gear and whatever unlocks. Enemy levels scale to some degree so it isn't a complete cakewalk the second time, though the game is fundamentally a cakewalk.

Though don't fuck with the moose until you figure out what you're doing.

Haven't had this much despair since Madoka.

A bunch of Nier Gestalt/Replicant stuff do pop up towards the end so you'd benefit a bit from having played that.

I played the demo but it didn't really click for me. Apparently some people say it's a classic (with a nice story and all that? which is important) but I just found it too repetitive.

And also I have a huge backlog so I can wait for a price drop to eventually try it out...

NieR: Automata was awesome! I don't agree with it being repetitive since the gameplay is constantly changing. If you want to 100% the game I suppose the game can get repetitive if you never try new weapons/strategies. The basic enemies do get a bit stagnant, but they're just a part of the scenery.

I have difficulty gathering my thoughts on this game, but I enjoy talking about it. Which can be a problem since everything is spoilers.

To me, it was worth getting the DLC it for the amount of gameplay it added, as well as some more information about the machines and the world. I wanted more NieR: Automata and that's what the DLC is. I'm working my way through all the endings because I did everything else and the completionist in me can't let it go xP

Did you complete Ending E? Some people don't and they really should.

I just want them all to be happy T_T

I did get ending E. I also watched/listened to the recital they did that followed up on it. But I'm still not sure what to think about it.

How does one even spoiler tag here, I guess I'll stick to the super microscopic text one has to copy and paste elsewhere to see. Or quote.

EDIT: Thanks. I am now enlightened.
SPOILERSShow
The only hope that ending gave is at least they are still alive. And if they are alive, they can figure something out and be happy I suppose.

But ultimately the world has gone completely fucked. Only 9S and A2(I think 9S blurted it out during their exchange) know the truth about humanity being extinct. I reckon 9S will fill 2B in. But their whole reason for fighting was still a complete farce and the rest of androidkind still buys into it. Do they reveal the truth? Will people believe them? I guess eventually androids will wisen up on it - machine lifeforms are basically no longer a threat at the end of it and they have to start wondering why humanity hasn't returned yet. If androidkind eventually the truth, will they be able to move on and find a new meaning in life? Especially considering they seem to be hardwired to be loyal to humanity. Will they just keep trying to fight the machine lifeforms just so they have a purpose in life?

And even though they are still alive, as special YorHa units who rely on the bunker for maintenance - I wonder how long they can keep themselves running. But if the pods manage to rebuild them from death, I suppose they can figure something out.

Pascal is either wallowing in despair, gone completely amnesiac or dead, with his village completely buggered. If he's still alive, I suppose he might be able to remake a new friendly machine lifeform faction. What happened to Pascal really broke my heart. Was it necessary to fuck with him so much?

No idea what the remaining machine lifeforms will be up to afterwards. The forest lot was hostile enough to begin with. I doubt they will be able to reconcile with androids afterwards.

So yeah, at least they are alive but everything has still gone to shit and was rather futile.

I'd like to think Emil rebuilds the shopping mall so 2B and 9S can go shopping for t-shirts.

ENDGAME SPOILERSShow
It's not just 9S and A2 that know about humanity being extinct. I think there must be quite a few androids that know the truth. Machine Research Report contains the information that leads me to believe this.

As hardwired as the androids are, we see that they have capacity for individuality. YoRHa androids would be the ones to have the most difficulty continuing on, but they're mostly wiped out. I don't think much would change whether or not the truth comes out. The androids and machines will still be at war. I feel like something would replace YoRHa sooner or later.

I don't have much hope for the machine lifeforms. But maybe lasting peaceful factions could happen.

Speaking of peaceful factions, what do you think happened at the amusement park? My favorite theory is that the rampaging machines were caused by an infection stemming from the clowns encountered during the stamp collecting. Simone had been preventing infected machines from escaping, but once 2B and 9S kill her, nothing is keeping them in the basement.

I can only hope that Emil's Determination isn't the end T_T

SPOILER DISCUSSIONSShow

I found a translated timeline from one of the art books or strategy guides or something.
http://i.imgur.com/aYfrp4n.png - if you're interested.

It has convinced me that androids can keep going. Humanity did go extinct before the alien invasion after all and they figured something out. There was apparently a faction of androids that declared independence from humanity afterwards and they all moved to Australia or something. And they did manage to come up with the whole convoluted YorHA fake humanity plan to begin with. They could also maybe make the next generation of androids less predisposed to weird things and to be more independent.

According to that timeline, apparently Pascal does set up a peaceful faction and the androids have an armistice. There was something about a division and conflict among the machine lifeforms too. Life goes on, conflict keeps going.

I didn't think anything special happened in the Amusement Park. I assumed the same red eye crazy virus spreading throughout the androids and machine lifeforms spurred by the tower was effecting them.

Automata blew my fucking mind. After finishing Breath of the Wild, I needed something to tide me over until Persona 5 came out, and went "huh, I remember that crazy looking game with the robot chick, I guess I can justify paying full price for that." It wrecked me in so many different ways.

Looking back, I'm super super glad I picked it up on a whim, knowing nothing about it or Yoko Taro. After Ending E, I immediately realized that topping this would be hard as hell, and I don't expect any game this year to do it.

And at the end of the day, it's three months later and I am still constantly listening to the OST. There's so much brilliance in a single game that I'm still dumbfounded at how good it all is.
Post-game spoiler talk!Show
I like to think that Ending E is the culmination of the thousands of years of robotic evolution. By knowing the truth of everything that's happened, they have finally evolved to the point of being able to truly make a choice. They know that the war is just a big lie, that humanity may as well be extinct, and there's no point in fighting anything anymore as they are all literally just the same.

But that means they can make the choice for what to do next. Yes, the world's gone to hell, everything is over and that sucks... but it's also a chance for them to make a new beginning. To no longer be bound by that whole humanity thing. They don't have to live up to trying to be human, or trying to understand what humans are about: they get to make those choices on their own. In short, they're allowed to finally, truly determine their own fate - with YorHa gone (or technically, with A2, 2B and 9S being the only surviving command structure of YorHa), they now have the position and authority to do whatever they want.

End of the day, it really doesn't matter what choices they make, because even the support pods said "fuck our orders". They're all brilliantly self-aware, and free of whatever chained them to their fate. Will they succumb like the robots that found 'enlightenment'? Or will they create a new society? Will they just roam the planet, watching as nature reclaims everything?

Things like this always get me, and that they left it open the way they did just really makes me better appreciate the brilliance of its writing. I fucking love this game.

If I haven't seen the honest trailer on Youtube, I wouldn't have played this game.

Late to the bandwagon but I am so glad I grabbed this during a deep discount on the PSN store (I think it was 50% off).

Also I've succeeded in avoiding spoilers so far (just around level 25 in 1st playthrough) and can't wait to see how everything unfolds. The change between gamemodes is refreshing but I do agree that combat can get a bit repetitive - though upgrading chips and weapons seems to help me mow through enemies quicker to get to the next story bit.

Maybe with a few more hours I can finally attempt that impossible escort quest again...

Got Ending E and consider myself done! But long before that the combat outlasted its welcome and it just became tedious...something I had to go through just for the next story bit. That also meant I have no intention to go back and finish the outstanding side-quests (let alone get the DLCs which I think are purely combat), unfortunately.

I want them to port this game on Nintendo Switch.
Finally got my ARE fusion tonneau cover. Time to secure some of my travel cargo from parking lot theft.
