I thought the first episode was fun --- it's great to see "letter of marque" used in an anime.
The hime-cut had me expecting Miyuki Sawashiro but it turned out to be Kana Hanazawa reprising her Asobi ni ikuyo role. |

I'm going to stick to calling it Mouppai or Moretsu Pirates.
#mo_retsu @captainMARIKA http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/mo-retsu/ http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encycloped...me.php?id=11399 This is Tatsuo Sato in his prime form. The introduction episode is so tight that it reminded me that anime can still be like this. It's been a while, but if you liked what you have seen seen in Nadesico or Stellvia, you must give this a shot. And it looks to be something more than your usual main-character-full-of-charisma sort of schtik, but it is playing out like that for now. I expect the usual ensemble, character-based storytelling that Sato is known for in the anime format. Looks like there's at least a dozen chess pieces to work with, give or take a few. Episode one already introduces us to Marika's school friends, HanaKana's character, at least two of the shipmates, the "dad" and the "mom." Let's bring on the underage drinking lololol. Letter of Marque LOLOLOL. I mean, wait, shouldn't this be Bodacious Space Privateers? Anachronism? LOLOLOLOLOL Definitely my favorite of the season. (glad it didn't disappoint lololol I am 1 for 1 lololol and all my guesses are spot on lolololol) |

What took you so long?
I'm so jaded I'm not ready to recommend this yet --- and certainly not ready to say anything about the second coming of Nadesico. But I might grudgingly admit that it shows at least Stellvia-level promise already. But yes, this first episode was tightly directed. Lots of stuff jammed in there, some of which I doubt I'll catch until the second or third viewing of the entire series. This post has been edited by dm on Jan 7 2012, 11:16 PM |

What took me so long? Only Yesterday and Pom Poko are long films.
Mouppai is an adaptation isn't it? Tho with Sato who knows how close at all it'll stick. And who is even comparing with Nadesico? It's just something if you like one you might be interested in. It's really too early to tell. Feels like ep1 is only half of the pilot episode. Maybe I should go watch that Rinne no Lagrange show. |

grabbed this one by accident instead of nisemonogatari. I didn't even realize until it finished dowloading. I decided to watch it anyway. I think I love it. It didn't feel retarded, despite the pirate thing. It was quite entertaining actually.

While I don't expect shows like this to respect the laws of physics in any way (bloody hell, the hard sci-fi nut it me can expect to be locked in the basement, but the mini-skirts are fucking win) I love the subtle touch of maneuvering thrusters and solar sails.
It's like having a nod to sailing ships minus the fugly gratuity of literal sailing ships in space. It's also nice to see the ships are like pens and pencils in space, consider the classic sci-fi nut appeased. So far, so good, except Crunchyroll falling flat on its face when in Linux. Flash for AMD 64 seems to be getting no luv from Adobe. Then again, Crunchyroll has always run batshit for me. |

Maybe because I was sleep deprived but like there isn't much to judge from the first episode. I was half expecting high flying space pirate ship battles from the get go but I guess it needs time to get there.

Indeed, the narrated intro was a tad disappointing. Particularly that it was pretty much redundant. Most of the stuff from the intro got properly introduced during the course of the episode as it should be. That was wasted time that could've been spent on a better hook, like showing a bit of the original Bentenmaru crew in action. Using the first episode just to set the stage is normal for Sato. I'm expecting more in episode 2. |

It's pretty fun comparing this to shows like Nadesico and Captain Harlock, heh. Highly enjoyed the first episode. Just what i like to see from Sato regarding a show about space pirates, so i have high hopes for the rest of the series. I've heard the that the novel has some pretty good material later on, though i've no idea how close the first episode was to the novel, so can't say anything about that just yet. Hope we see more of past Ririka in action. So badarse.
You mean Kana Hanazawa reprising her roles that end up sounding the same. :3 |

I may have jumped the gun a bit in assuming that she'd been sent there to protect Marika from potential threats. She certainly detected the subterfuge of the "spaceport security" person and reacted quickly enough when things got hot.
Different personalities, though. Chiaki doesn't seem shy and mild. I loved the parfait gap-moe. Also, I guess I'm alone in actually enjoying the OP (but I liked Denpa onna to seishun otoko's OP, too). |

I think the OP is actually great. This season we got some really outstanding stuff, both Lagrange and this.
But take my opinion with some salt; i've been listening to momoiro clover z's album and they have this track which could have been a page out of Animaniacs. it's a lot of fun. |
