According to various references on youtube and other random notables, Yamaha's synthesizing voice software, Vocaloid, has become under the spotlight once more with its release of Vocaloid 2: Hatsune Miku. For those unfamiliar with the software, it basically gives you the layout of the notes of the voices, in which you fine tune the technical reverberations of the voice, syllables, and other such matters. It also recieves normal, typed english, complete with heavy accent, if chosen. The character is quite cute as well. For comparison, here are some youtube videos attempting to emulate the originals. Mononoke Hime True My Heart Pretty nice voice, if I do say so myself. One wonders the extent of the capabilities of this software. Song production need not be crippled to voices; this idol works on one salary. ~Chun This post has been edited by Chun on Sep 10 2007, 04:27 PM |

It's a cool idea, but I think it's a little of a LOL waste to try to mimic silly anime/akiba pop. This kind of voice tool can be used in some pretty creative ways in new music.
But I presume the tool itself is not incredibly easy to use? LOL@ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qanYM6TkwCc this is not too bad! |

I think Volcaloid works best when used with high pitched/squeaky voices, i.e most J-pop and anime op/ed's. When its used for a more "normal" sound it just sounds like a robot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK--2dmFMjU Check out the Vocaloid trying to do sting. |

Yeah, that sounds like (and the logo shows) that it's the first vocaloid. The closest think to Miku in 2 is Mieko, who really did sound robotic.

A start, but a long way from a Celine Dion or Pavarotti... (composed while listening to a Celine/Andrea Bocelli? duet).
Will we eventually have artificial singers that outstrip humans like a jet outflies birds? |

I'm a bit of an opera fan and I think this is an intriguing idea when it comes to artificial vocal performances. Jpop and anime music is fun, but wouldn't it be interesting to artificially create more demanding vocal performances? Imagine developing a "voice" that there is no concern of developing or deteriorating over time and will always be ready to perform. Imagine tweaking it to match the characteristics of famous performers of the past, hearing new performances from say Callas or the recently deceased Pavarotti, or to go the other route, Billy Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald? But then even if the voices could be mimicked, would it be capable of having the same character or artistry brought to that sound as the original artists? Anyone can play a trumpet, but not everyone can play it like Miles Davis. But then that element of artistry may come down to whoever is running the mixing booth. Even aside from reproducing famous vocal talents of the past, it's certainly interesting. Hell, maybe Sharon Apple isn't too far away after all. |

This one of Uninstall is done really well IMO.
I like this for itscreative use of the program to make an acappela version of Hare Hare Yukai. Since Clannad is coming up, time to pimp its ending song. Finally, people living in Japan should get a kick out of this one. |
