Work in progress, flat colors only. Will add textures and shades when I actually learn how to happy.gif
Thank you to omnilynx for the excellent lineart, it was perfect for a beginner like me. What bugged me the most was sorting out the colors for the front of Largo's jacket, i.e. trying to understand where the rifle ended and those other thingies began. Hope I didn't screw up too much.

Hopefully I'll be able to turn it into a wallpaper, it'll never be as good as one made by Baka^2 but a guy can dream wink.gif

I don't think "AC" (artist's collaboration) applies to DPDs...

Could still apply, since the image is a collaboration, with someone else doing the lineart.

Nice, I was hoping someone would use my lineart. Raccoon, I noticed after I'd posted that I left out a little line making the rear sight box 3d, so your confusion was my fault unsure.gif. Now we just need someone else to shade it, and maybe a fourth to add effects, and it'll be a real collaboration. happy.gif

No prob, if you feel like updating it go ahead, that rifle needs work anyway. I also took the liberty of extending your lines in a couple places where it could help contain the colors (mostly the trousers), hope it's not too noticeable.

This evening I'm going home with a load of texture tutorials, I can't wait to start experimenting wink.gif

Naw, it's fine. But you might want to clean up that panel at the bottom: I see some aliasing there. The eyes also need coloring. I'm awaiting your v.2 eagerly.

aand here it is. I guess this is the extent of my ability at the moment. I can see there are a few problems with this image, but I can't really put my finger on them.

..well, aside from the undefined hair. The glowing badge makes zero tactical sense, but I find it cool happy.gif

oh, a little extra tongue.gif

Great job! laugh.gif
I think one of the problems is the highlight on their faces; its not on any of the other areas nearby (wall, hair etc.)

Things I like:
The badges bleeding, the textures, the shading on the hands and gun, girls (what, I never said 'about the picture'!).

Things I don't like (about the picture):
*All the textures are pointing the same way. It would have been better to angle them the way the surface was facing. This is especially apparent on Largo's legs, although it's annoying elsewhere.
*The highlighting on the faces is bold enough, but as Qwert said you don't seem to have a clear light source. I can whip up a quick mask to show you if you need help finding it. The other shadows (except the hands and gun I mentioned) aren't really even there, so you need to put them in before I comment. This could be why the whole pic looks way too bright for a night strike.
* Some hair texture would be nice; I know hair is the hardest part, but it's also what'll set you apart from all the other CGers, so you might as well start now.

The 'things I don't like' section is longer solely because I had to explain myself, not because I don't like your work. As I've said before, the fact that I'm commenting means I like it (also, I guess, that you're using my lineart happy.gif). I hope you can work on this more: what I'd really like to see you do is go beyond the extent of you current abilities. Anyway, nice work. smile.gif

What, you mean after you take out most of Fred's work? Keeping the feel of a pencil sketch when you go over the lines with something darker is really difficult to do right. Try taking a pen to a newspaper photo sometime and see what you can make of it-even reality can seem poorly drawn.
Oh, and good job on the picture. I particularly like the glowing badges.

Naw, it's just different. For one thing, Fred can't spend the time we do; just doing the lineart for this took me a few hours. Also, he's able to capture much more of a feeling of atmosphere. I would choose one of Fred's sketches over pretty much any CG here (I think I've seen *one* that I *might* choose over Fred's 'bad' work).

Well, a few problems with the lineart are
1) No line width dynamics
2) Some lines were left out in Largo's hair: where it parts (is that called a widow's peak?).
user posted image
See where I've gone in with a darker red?
3) Really thick lines. Who did the lineart for this pic?

As for the CG, the flat colors are fine but it needs much more defined shadows, and a light source direction.

The glow on the badges is neat though. smile.gif

1) True. That was my laziness kicking in.
2) I hadn't noticed till you said it, but you're right. Problem is, Fred left it out, too:

3) Really? They seem about right to me... Regardless, that's the finest pen I have (Micron 02), and the lineart took up the whole page, so that's as narrow as it's gonna get. Think of it as my style. wink.gif

Haha "style" the oldest excuse in the book!

OH! When I was internetless last weekend I started this. I MIGHT finish. Only because you kids need to learn what shading is. *cough*

And might make it all specialy effects-y. We shall see.

Also one last reminder: Shading is color, not black and white. Grey is not a shadow, it will only SUCK THE LIFE out of your picture.

Oh and I just dug up a good forum from a while back,
http://forums.megatokyo.com/index.php?showtopic=1694246
I'd say its most important feature is that it tells you how to use the "Multiply" setting so you can use the original like a coloring book.

I said I would get something, and thus here it is. Kinda rushed and weirdly colored...Blegh.

Version one, no special effects.

And version two with some extra layers of fun. :}

Ah, I was wondering. Nice. That's a lot more like the mood that I had in mind looking at the drawing. The pants look a little weird with all the scribbling left in; I probably would have made them a little darker, but that's my only beef.
