Eurovision is a show of lameness for more than 30 years. But it keeps on getting worse and worse. UK is so going down with it (damn ! those schoolgirls are worse than japanese ones !!)

For Bosnia, I'll just pretend they didn't make it to the qualifications. They choose a stupid song when there were so much better ones. Stupid jury. I'll do the same for France...

Go... hum... ah yeah ! Go Sweden ! Can't be worse than the others. I also wonder what offense to ears the Germans are gonna bring this year...

As a newspaper reviewed them "Melodius poodle-rock preformed by Orchs. Finland is definitly getting the idea"

...The rest pretty much range from worthless to atrocious.

When is it already ? This Saturday ? I hope not, I won't be home, and I really think it would be fun to make fun of the show in real time on the thread. Just us Euros, laughing at our brethrens trying to "sing".

So I could laugh at Lisan...

Edit after Keg's post : Wow, Finnland ! No wonder it's the country that produced Alexi Laiho and Children of Bodom.

For a second there I was hoping this was something like the music video for In Bloom, where the sugar wore out into a bitter and enjoyable encore but dear god...

And people talk of doing a Eurovision-style show in the US?

Props to the Finns for their entry, it was kinda cheezy but much better in comparison.

Are Finland really putting Lordi through! that the best thing I’ve heard in ages. You do know that Lordi is not a band that have just been put together just for the Eurovision song contest, they are a real band and they have albums. And yeah those customs are stupid, I saw a interview where their lead vocalist said that they dress up so often that its almost become an obsession, and that they are starting to believe that they are real monsters....very weird.
Anyway the british song was....lets just say, i didn't listen to it all

I've not heard our entry (and nor do I intend to) but I assume it will be as crap as ever. I'm rooting for Lordi (from...I wanna say Denmark?) jsut because they don't seem to fit, yet are so cheesey and over the top in appearance that they may well do alright.

I suppose there will be plenty this year that weren't expected to fit, but will fit in anyway because the whole thing might turn into a collective freakshow. The Dutch entry for instance consists of three girls beating drums while singing in some sort of imaginary babyspeak.. >_>

They have long blond hair, but they aren't really hot... I don't know, I can't remember being turned on anyway, but maybe that's because I left the sound on for too long. tongue.gif

Hehe, I never vote in the contest as the voting is already biased enough by politics without me voting for the hottest/funniest entry. It has very little to do with the music these days (though Gemeni did deserve what they got).

As for the British entry... WTH were they thinking? Is he "rapping" with an American accent? The Finnish one was awesome, zombie cheerleaders FTW!

Diablo: Yeah, it's almost a shame that I don't really like black metal, considering that there's so much around here... Love The Kovenant though.

Nightwish are awsome, I saw them live last year and they blew me away, I caught the guitarist's plectrum after he played the solo in Nemo with it. Shame about Tarja being fired.

And Lordi may be a little weird but in no way do they provoke Satanical thoughts, they're not even that heavy.

Just a question to those that have already watched past Eurovisions. Do the commentators in your countries make fun of other countries in the contest, in such a manner you want to laugh at their stupidity ? The French commentators for the show can't stop mocking in outrageous terms other contestants. Sometimes it's funny how mean they are, sometimes I wanna kick the TV. I send an e-mail once to tell them to learn moderation and respect... I got a laconical reply that the TV Channel respects fully the other contestants.

O rly ? (non, Roissy)

Lordi should be playing Blood Red Sandman... IMO it's better than Hardrock Hallelujah... It's more melodic, so that would make it more appropriate for Eurovision. However, it's true that Hardrock Hallelujah has got more to get people grooving, and will really contrast with the other entries...

France last? YA RLY. Ok, I'm a bit harsh. We might just not be completely last, as the sound is quite good. The only problem is that any human being who understands the words will feel like ripping out their tympans because of the incredibly naive words...

And for those that have a LOT of free time, and who wish to be able to listen to the songs without technical difficulties or dumb commentators who just won't fuck up :

Albania
Germany
Andorra
Armenia
Bielorussia
Belgium
Bosnia... Just for T4R0K
Bulgaria
Cyprus
Croatia
Denmark
Macedonia
Spain
Estonia
Finland... The winners
France
Grece
Ireland
Iceland
Israel
Latvia
Lithuania
Malta
Moldovia
Monaco
Norway
Netherlands
Poland
Portugal
Romania
United Kingdom... Rather doomed
Russia
Slovenia
Sweden
Switzerland
Turkey
Ukraine

Also.. More bad news : Daz Sampson knows how to make great music : He was one of the two leads of the great dance/beat group Bus Stop...

Wanna bet that Finland won't win the ESC?

The best place Finland has gotten before is the sixth place. Eh. But this time, we aren't sending some kind of wannabe-star whose song has something to do with love. That kind of stuff never has any kind of success or stands out well.

Lordi being the one selected to represent Finland was thanks to all the fairly young people.

We can surely start preparing the hospitals for all the people over 50, who are most likely going to get a heart attack when they see Lordi. It would be humorous though. Pyroeffects and the armor ftw.

But even so, we won't win. If we are at least in the top-3, the Swedes sink our "hopes" of winning.

"Finland, zero points!"

I've heard that once too often.

Oh yeah, there were some people from the music industry judging the Eurovision entries. The only one that was really dissed was Lithuania's entry. I didn't see anything that would have been wrong with it, but it got dissed anyways.

Pessimistic thinking ftw.

Was amused and happy to find out Lordi got voted to represent us. biggrin.gif The music itself's really not for me, but I can see why they might appeal to fans of KISS or melodic, "party"-oriented heavy metal. Can you say disco metal? tongue.gif

Sure hope they win - I don't care at all if FINLAND wins because ESC blows anyhoo, but at least it'd be nice to have a winner that shakes things up a bit.

Que ? I thought there was a rule stating it must be bands not famous outside their own country prior to the emission ? Las Ketchup is none for many earbleedings in France 2 years ago. Some are still traumatized.

I thought that the only requirment was that the song had be new and never recorded before. I mean Carola is quite known throughout Scandinavia, though I also hate her performance.

Well... Where's the problem if she removes the "fucking" ? Oh, it's not what they hold against her ? Ah ok... She's being pretentious, thinking she'll win and that's called influencing the audience. Ah ok.

I hate people like her. Plus, she really looks like an idiot in those costumes. I think even the japanese must have thought "Oh mai godu ! Badu cospre !!"

Well at least Silvia is bringing some needed life into this contest. biggrin.gif
¡Maldita sea Las Ketchup! I'm still in shock that they get to perform.
I have to say that, even though I dont understand the lyrics, the song Lejla is growing on me.

Though, if Japan was an european country, I'd vote for the girl singing the OP of Haruhi. (Bouken desho desho lalalala...) It just don't wanna leave my brain !!!

Well, the semi-finals are on the next thursday. Lordi is number 16... we'll see if Lordi ends up with a landslide win, or with a sudden surprising loss.

Blasphemy. England gave us Monty Python.

It doesn't change my point. The Monty Pythons are also a result of that.

And how ? Because...

... they have bad taste on purpose. And that's the whole difference. When I see English humour, it pwnz the french one because it is based on crazy and non-sense. Some french humorists got it right. They start to do random things that lead to funny.

English love strange tastes because it is their trademark, what makes them so special. Just look at the Queen : serious, yet in funny colored attire and stupid hats. You GOTTA laugh like crazy.

There's that poem from an Hungarian immigrant that flew the commies to live in the UK where he talks about the bizarre ways of the English people. The most incredible thing is... that they liked it.

So do Americans.

"The typical Hollywood audience. All the kids are on drugs and the adults are on roller-skates."

*laughter*

"We son't much like your American beer. It's like having sex in a canoe."

"Having sex in a canoe?"

"It's fucking close to water."

*laughter*

Not that I'm trying to defend America, hell no.

And all this lead up to an amusing jungle about how philosophers where really drunkards.

The ESC semi-finals are on thursday, finals on saturday I think.

And yes, Finland hasn't done all that well because of different factors. Sometimes the song hasn't stood out enough, sometimes the outfit/the song is "shocking" or otherwise not fitting for the majority of Europe... sometimes we've lost just because our songs have been too difficult to understand.

But, I'll watch the ESC anyways. Like I'll watch Finland's team being slaughtered in the WC of ice hockey.

not a lot

how many people of fine discriminating taste vote in eurovision polls? none.

how many old grannies and pre-teens? lots

as far as i can tell real musicians with proper bands and music careers represent plenty of other nations. not the UK. We could have sent over some kind of Chemical Brothers/Sway collaboration or had Asian Dub Foundation pound the stage. But it would have killed their careers to go on the OMG L4M3Z0R eurovision, so we get karaoke non-entitites like Gemini and Daz...

Also, the sad truth is that Arctic Monkeys or Bloc Party would have scored null point (well, maybe the irish would have saved our arses like last year).

it's lame
so we don't put any effort in
or take much interest
so it stays lame
so we don't put any effort in
etc.

Only you CAN'T laugh, she's the Queen. It's practically an offense.
Hell, it USED to be one before the civil war.

Anyway, half the fun of the Eurovision is the terrible entries put in by countries trying not to win so they don't have to host it the next year. Look at ireland, they won it 3 years in a row, and by the last one couldn't afford anywhere nice to put it.

The british entry is just... Ugh. Too bad for words.
And the 'schoolgirls' are blatantly older but chosen to look younger.

Honnestly if the UK atcually gave a shit about it we'd of won hands down, right now were in a bit of a renacianse for brit rock music, the kaizer chiefs, franz ferdianand, the artic monkeys to name but a few.

As for bad taste, your very wrong, the people that care enough to vote for people to be on the eurovison song contest have bad taste. It must also be remembered that your average brit doesnt even want to be apart of europe.

We also have no chance because no one likes us.

Ok. Lordi broke Finland's record of most points... and also the Eurovision's point record... go Lordi.

Did anyone heard of the rumors that Lordi was sued, because it is thought that he is a satanist? Seriously, Greeks do whatever they can to not let the Finns win...

But, all is well, Finland won, and next year the ESC will be in here Finland. We'll see how much money will be spent in that. And we'll also see if other countries also try sending a metal band to the ESC...

QUOTE (Jatic @ May 21 2006, 07:38 AM)
And we'll also see if other countries also try sending a metal band to the ESC...

This, actually, is the most interesting thing about Lordi winning. ESC is songwise mostly populated with happy melodies, shallow (and silly) lyrics etc that appeal to old grannies and... well I dunno, certain kinds of people! And even though it may be stereotypical, yes, to my gay friend. Though he acknowledges and appreciates the campiness of it all.
So, this year Lordi for teh win and he's totally different from it all, I mean, Eurovision coo-coos in Finland (well probably mostly Christian zealots/crazies) have been voicing out a message along the lines of "Lordi representing us? Oh, where has the world gone! Decay is all around us!".

SO... the actual interesting part is to see how many countries will try with, not necessarily a metal band, but with something different next year. I usually only watch ESC to get the experience of being nailed to my chair by sheer horror, but if more actual quality music starts getting in (though it's not all bad now either, some ballads sung in native languages are OK) it'll be much more fun.

I myserlf (being a Finn) was in a bar last night, with ESC on screen and loads of more or less drunk fellow countrymen rooting for Lordi - I've never really experienced any sports-related mass hysteria or anything, but the spirit in the bar was pretty infectious. laugh.gif

I didn't watch last year, but those who did this year - I'm sure you noticed how many cheap attempts for votes there were? Several performances relied on scantily clad females, and Ukraine's song totally copied Shakira's style with both rhythm and voice. Not that I care for Shakira either, but that's not the point. happy.gif

All in all, it was good entertainment this year. Oh, and Lithuania's entry was fun. If they'd want to make loads of cash with the soccer song of '06, they could just change the lyrisc into "We are the winners - of FIFA World Cup!"

*chuckle*

While Lordi isn't all that special in music, compared to some other metal bands, they certainly were the best of all in the context of Eurovision. Nice to see that the other countries taught the same.
Perhaps next year the Eurovision will actually be worth watching, with lots of non-mainstream bands performing, inspired by Lordi. Hell, who knows, we might actually, *gasp*, hear really good music in EV, one day.

Got to love those fundamentalists, by the way - they apparently failed to hear when Mr. Lordi sung: "the true believers thus shall be saved, brothers and sisters must not lose faith". If anything, he's singing gospel, albeit in rather unorthodox manner. I imagine that he has something in common with those Medieval artisans who carved churches full of hideous gargoyles. cool.gif

And just to summarize: cheers for Lordi! Hell has finally frozen up.

Glam rock and heavy metal are not the same, as far as I know. They might be based on the same type of music, but then again, there's a shitload of differences after that.

And yes, Hell is most likely going to freeze over, like that one joke says...

...though, now we have to change that joke. To something like: "Hell is going to freeze over before Finland wins the World Championships in soccer".

Alright folks ! Next year is Finland's turn to host the ESC. I was thinking, to stay in touch with the song, that the show must be freakin' awesome ! I ask all rock fans (of any sub-kind) if you think it would be a good idea to beg the organisators to let Children of Bodom's crew be the hosts ? I so want Alexi Laiho to do the job !!

Well, it can be CoB or any other metal band from Finland (save for HIM or the Rasmus. Those are to be kept locked far away in dark basements).

Something other than crappy cheesy pop won eurovision? What next? Metal idol?

I generally like entries that put effort in, but don't take themselves too seriously -- "Hard Rock Hallelujah!" did both well, "We are the winners" was my second choice as it did the latter amazingly (where did that one come in the end?), but (intentionally?) had none of the first~ England's entry seemed to do the first a bit too much -- you really can't have a 40 year old white guy rapping without the act being aware of it's own sillyness...

I thought that too; I think maybe the song has to be new, but it can be done by a well known artist?

If you really took great attention, you'd also notice that they changed their keyboardist, and the costume for their lead guitarist...

Yeah I checked this stuff after realizing that either the members or at least the costumes were different. Actually, you don't see them that clearly on the video, but I prefer those earlier costumes.

OH, and obviously, Lithuania's performance was infiltrated by the legendary Finnish president Kekkonen. ohmy.gif He's been given resurrection and rejuvenation treatments and brainwashed by the Lithuanian people!

True, the old costumes were more stylish - especially the zombie-guy in a top hat, IMO - although less colourful. I hear that it's neccesary to replace them after every few gigs, since they get torn or otherwise broken rather quickly. Mr. Lordi replaces his face every day, after performance, too. I guess that they want to try new things, every once in a while.

The Keyboarder is new. Awa (the possessed Sorceress princess thing) replaced Enary (the Manipulative Valkyrie)

The bass player is also new, Ox (horned skull guy) replaced Kalma (Zombie Top-hat biker) who originally replaced Magnum (the masterchief-alike)

everything else is costume rework.

Oh my fucking God, I saw Britains act a while back. Seriously, a 40 year old man 'rapping' about what it's like to be a teenager while a bunch of chavs breakdance next to him. What kind of lyrics are 'Teach the children fine and they won't do the crime'. I'm so embarrased.
I liked Finland's entry, the best one there and deserved to win. Britain's tabloids got a bit pissed off though, sore losers I rekon.

Edit: I just hope I'm not the only one who finds the girlie singing sexy blink.gif

Hey, dude, chill out! biggrin.gif Us English don't actually care! The only reason we watch is to see if our prediction skills are up to date - we like to guess who's voting for whom, and how many points they'll get, and most of Europe hasn't let us down yet!

Example - the countries ending 'ia' vote for the ones ending 'ia' without fail, the Scandinavian countries vote for the Scandinavians, and Ireland and France're consistant in their non-voting for us. We see which country we've hacked off a few months previously, and play the guessing game of who isn't that country going to vote for.

The only thing we find a little sad is the fact that it used to be about music, now it's about politics.

But yeah, we refuse to take it seriously cos we're too busy laughing at the pettiness involved!

I do agree though, anything involving chavs deserves to be sent to the slaughter house and put out of its misery!

whatthefuxlastyear...

saxonrain, you need to read the rules man. You can't dig up old threads. Double posting is bad too.

Speaking of which, is Eurovision annual? It must be coming up?

It was run on May 11-12.

Wogan was up to his usual brilliance I must say and made his usual jibes about block voting by the Baltics, the Balkans and the Scandinavians. I was surprised when Malta gave its 12 points to the UK this time around, to be fair Scooch was rubbish.

The Serbian entrant won this year, which is probably because they had more friends like Croatia and Slovakia giving them douze points.

Next year they're talking about 2 semi-finals ohmy.gif Is this over egging the pudding a bit now?
