Unless AMD decided to not use the x86 architecture with that chip and thus make it's own breed of processors, which I don't believe that they have, then yes... it will work.
To clue you in, all the AMD chips and all of the Intel chips run off of the x86 architecture. Well, that is if you don't go too far into the past with the 8088s and the likes. Linux runs on the x86 architecture (as well as some other ones too). The question would be whether there has been a release of the kernel optimized specifically for the Sempron. That, I don't know This post has been edited by kn1ghtm0nk on Aug 1 2005, 09:37 PM |

Works fine.
If I remember right, a Sempron is basically a repackaged Thoroughbred-core Athlon. |

i thought the sempron was a repackaged update of the duron... but yes, linux works like a charm on the sempron. |

the 32-bit AMD processors work fine with Linux. I'll have to disagree with bruce tho, I would sugest going with either Mandrake 10.x or Fedora Core 4 due to the idiotproof graphical installation software.

Ubuntu's installation is rather idiot proof too. At least not any less so than Fedora. I've used both of them and found them both as easy to install as each other.

The only thing different about the Fedora install that I liked over Ubuntu is the choice of components you have for installation. Aside from that, there isn't much between them. |

Yeah, you can install any Linux distro on a system using the Sempron CPU. The only problems we have are 64-bit drivers for both *nix and Windows XP 64-bit, but you can fallback on the 32-bit drivers for Linux. (Just don't use a 64-bit kernel)

And why exactly are 64bit drivers an issue under Linux? |

Especially since they're open source.
