I love silent hill. So I figured since Silent Hill was a game first it should go here.
Hmmmmmmmm......... Check this place out for info on the movie..http://comingsoon.net/news.php?id=1571
Silent hill is not like the other horror games out there. It's got almost all of it's inspiration from the most fucked up minds out there. Since Konami [the original creators] Are backing it up. It should be really good. I'm sure it will be really good.
However I Haven't heard much from the fans.
Is silent hill not very popular any more? I know the 4th game sucked but the silent hill dying inside comic was very good
Check out this site ...............http://www.ashgaming.net/silenthillfilm.php
and please click on the Konami video news update. there is a clip of the movie in there. If any one understands japanese please tell us what it says unsure.gif

So this topic's purpose is this. Is the future of silent hill riding on this movie?
Will it be scary? Does any one care? please let me know smile.gif

...You guys, this is the biggest Silent Hill Film update yet!! Staff member Ingrid, aka HolyMolyRavioli on the forums, has brought to my attention, something big. As I last updated on the film, a site talked about the Silent Hill Film being based on a mother and daughter who get put into a whole new Silent Hill nightmare. The Silent Hill Film will have a new storyline, which may be a prequel to Silent Hill 1, so that means, it happened before the first game, before Harry or Cheryl went! They will be using all of the original music from the games in the film. The storyline is about a desperate mother, in search of either he daughter... or someone that her and her daughter came to Silent Hill. I am not too sure, as I only understand a little bit of Japanese! For those of you that visit and could translate for us, we would appreciate it greatly!!
Moving on, they haven't said anything about whether the game is going to be actualy actors, real people, or if it will all be computer graphics. So any news that you have heard up till now... may be false. And the only solid and true evidence we have are well... this video news update, the Konami press release, and the screenwriter, Roger Avary's blog! So everyone, check out this new and exclusive update from Konami. And remember you got it first, from us, here at ASH!! Thanks for coming, please do come back, and we will keep you up to date on the Silent Hill Film!!

you are welcome smile.gif

I really hope they do a good job of translating SH to film. I don't want to have to throw together a second rioting mob (Like I have for the Metroid movie that's in production...).

Source: Konami of America, Inc. September 18, 2003

Leading videogame publisher, Konami of America, Inc., a subsidiary of Konami Corporation, today announced that its hit psychological horror videogame series, Silent Hill, will be released worldwide as a major motion picture. Production company Davis Films will produce the feature film adaptation of Konami's popular franchise. Produced by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo, Inc., the "Silent Hill" games thrust players into a nightmarish world where they must unravel twisted storylines and battle grotesque creatures and terrifying monsters.

Bringing the series to the big screen is prolific producer Samuel Hadida whose credits include blockbuster films, True Romance, directed by Tony Scott and written by Quentin Tarantino, Spider, directed by David Cronenberg, and Brotherhood of the Wolf, directed by Christophe Gans. Gans, who also directed the major motion picture, Crying Freeman, has been appointed as the director of the Silent Hill feature film.

"Silent Hill is a groundbreaking game with an atmosphere that has mesmerized millions of gamers all over the world - it is scary and clever," said Christophe Gans. "I am very proud to be associated with this game."

Working closely with the production team, Konami Corporation will help recreate the universal appeal of the game by overseeing the script development, participating in the design of all the monsters, creatures and characters as well as aiding in the film’s soundtrack composition.

"The success of the Silent Hill series is based on a perfect blend of suspense, plot twists and captivating characters," said Geoff Mulligan, Chief Operating Officer of Konami of America, Inc. "We are confident that Samuel Hadida and his talented team will capture and create an unforgettable movie-going experience."

"Silent Hill" is the premiere franchise in the horror videogame genre with over four million copies sold in Japan, the U.S. and Europe. "Silent Hill 3" for PlayStation 2 was recently released in August 2003 and is considered to be the best game in the series. With a terrifying narrative, spectacular graphics and a bloodcurdling soundtrack, "Silent Hill 3" has already garnered numerous industry accolades and awards.

To further strengthen the Konami brand worldwide, the company is currently pursuing film production deals for its other blockbuster videogame franchises.

Yeah I'm putting my faith in Konami Corp happy.gif They'll keep that director in check.
And SilverThorn_2000, If it does suck, Can I join your riot?
Can any one translate that movie clip at.......

Sure you can join the riot if it stinks.

Anywho, it'll be interesting to see how it turns out. There's a lot of video game movies being made lately, and it's made me a little wary. Anyone here remember the mid-ninety's video game movie craze?

This movie is the scariest thing yet about Silent Hill (that is a VERY SCARY THING then!); I have never seen a good movie based on a videogame. And I want this movie to be good. I want to enjoy it (and be scared) on the same level as the games. Yamaoka and the guys at Konami have to take responsibility and ensure that both fans and newcomers to Silent Hill will be satisfied.

Maybe if it DOES succeed, will Silent Hill become more 'mainstream'? Oh who knows. Better forget about this and watch it when it comes. No stress. ph34r.gif

mAnbimanimanimA brings up a good point!

Konami is taking this movie very seriously. And I guess they are being very secret about it too. My friend Getta313 is helping with the clip on the ash gaming site. It's the only lead anyone has.
I read somewhere that Konami doesn't want anyone doing anything stupid with the movie. Like making "Aliens" the bad guys, I guess they were refering to the joke endings and the fact that alot of people fuck up videogame movies. At least Konami is aware of that!
QUOTE
September 20, 2004 - Filmmaker Roger Avary (The Rules of Attraction) has revealed on his official site that he is collaborating with director Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf) on the script for the forthcoming movie version of Silent Hill.

Avary writes, "Silent Hill... my life is consumed by it. The soundtrack to Silent Hill 2, the graphic novel, fan art, and of course, the games. I'm mostly spending the evenings re-playing Silent Hill 2 (my favorite of the series) on my French PS2, and then watching various DVDs that Christophe suggests are similar to the Silent Hill feel. Then, every morning at 10AM, a car picks me up from my apartment in St.-Germain-des-Pres to deliver me to the palatial offices of Samuel Hadida (which we call KGB Central) where Christophe and I feverishly work alongside each other. We have the entire 4th Floor production suite to ourselves.  Christophe is obsessed with all sorts of obscure Italian soundtracks, which we listen to (along with the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack and heavy doses of Serge Gainsbourg) while we write. We've had a game system brought into the office so that we can take breaks to play."

Fans of the game should be pleased to hear that Avary is playing it enough to have a firm grasp on the source material, but he warns that he isn't nearly as obsessed with the subject matter as Gans is.  He writes, "Okay, one thing: WOULD YOU FREAKING SILENT HILL FANS PLEASE STOP SENDING ME YOUR SCRIPTS! I delete them without reading them, and it's getting a little absurd. I mean, does everyone who plays this game write a script immediately after finishing?! And please, stop asking me if I'm as obsessed with this game as you are. The answer is, NO, I'm not. But Christophe Gans IS. I'm just writing down his interpretations and visions. I appreciate the concerns, and I'm happy to know what your favorite moments of the game are – but please, relax a little. It's going to be a fantastic filmic experience – Christophe is too obsessed with it for it not to be. Have faith."

Silent Hill 2, which seems to be serving as the primary inspiration for the film, centers around James Sunderland, a man who's life is shattered when his young wife Mary suffers a tragic death. Three years later, a mysterious letter arrives from Mary, beckoning him to return to their sanctuary of memories, the dark realm of Silent Hill.

Thanks to "Peter" for the heads-up.

so bacially the movie is under wraps does any body have any assumptions on what this ones going to be about. and do you think that there gonig to make a game off the movie. finally are thay going to put puzzles in this movie that maybee transfer over to the game if they are going to make the game?

also does any body kind of get mad when you watch a movie of a game and you expect it to be longer. then it just cuts off, kind of like the matrix, the lord of the rings, and 28 days later(even though it did suck or at least i thought so). wink.gif

I'm so in debt to http://www.ashgaming.net/silenthillfilm.php they are the silent hill gods. Thank you ash gaming for finding out this cool info and letting us part take in the awsome silent hill movie. smile.gif
As for TENSU's questions, that's the cool thing about silent hill, all of it's forms ,Comic,Videogame, and Movie are all connected. I was really surprised when I found out the comic takes place before silent hill 1 You have to read/ watch/play it all to find out the whole story! So if you are excited ,read the comic! biggrin.gif Also if a movie gets me mad cause it ends, then I consider it good. Cause it manage to get my full attention biggrin.gif
Heres that comic link

Getta313 just took the time to help with the video clip
QUOTE
I took a quick listen, and I’m sorry to tell you there isn’t much going on with the clip.

Keep in mind I didn't pick up everything, and I'm just paraphrasing here and not translating, but…

Basically, it’s just saying that in LA a promo event was held to announce a movie based on the Silent Hill video game seires, which is being made by the American film market. After the event, the US film staff met with Akira Yamaoka, who produced the music for the Silent Hill video games, and talked about the film. Yamaoka will be working on the music for the film.

As for the little CG clip, they don’t talk about it directly. I’m at work so I wasn’t able to play the sound very loudly and couldn’t clearly make out the dialogue. The younger voice says “Mother” and most likely “help;” the older voice just says “Sharon.”

Thank YOU Getta313 !!!!! You really are the Gandalf of the megatokyo website!

Anyways, I'm still pretty wary about video game movies, because the screw-ups are more common than the decent translations. Out of all the vidgame movies I've seen, only Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil were good translations.

Yeah, I'll have to agree with you on that one. It's the same with videogame anime too! The only good ones i've seen are Street Fighter 2 the animated movie [not the gay tv series] and Gungrave.

The director did say he was a huge fan. I guess time will tell. It's amazing how crappy my taste were when I was little. back in the mid-ninety's video game movie craze I was loving it. I actully enjoyed the mario movie and loved all the crappy cartoon versions of the video game shows. [the nintendo cartoons]
The cereal and the action figures too. I was so sad.......
check out this place for really creppy info on SH

One more thing.............I heard that Silent Hill 5 will be a First person shooter.

Uh? They have a director for Silent Hill already. Kind of like makes me more afraid, though, taken his earlier movies. Just wondering if he can make a 'Silent Hillish' horror movie, since there is not that much atmospheric movies on his list. He's said that he is a big-time Silent Hill fanatic, though, so maybe he could do it if he remembers what he is doing dry.gif

Have you seen them? Crying Freeman is one of the best live-action anime adaptions ever (not saying much...) and Brotherhood of the Wolf is the best film to come out of France since Reno and Jeunet split up.

--EDIT--

You updated as I posted. You obviously haven't seen Brotherhood of the Wolf, as you claim he has never made anything "Atmospheric"...

Well hello. Read my post. Sorry for the hassle with editing.

But.
I have seen Brotherhood of the Wolves and Crying Freeman (EDIT: I actually saw them because I heard the SH movie will be directed by him). Why would I say anything like that if I hadn't seen anything by him ever? They are good movies, yes. And Brotherhood of the Wolves might have a bit of atmosphere. BUT.

QUOTE

My point being, can he make a "Silent-Hillishly-atmospheric" movie. And read. "Not that much". Well, if he really is a Silent Hill fan, I don't think he wants to fuck this up. And with the Konami guys and Akira Yamaoka with him, this might become something really good...

I didn't say it makes me more afraid because the movies were BAD, didn't I?

Have you guys seen the stuff that influence's Silent Hill?

QUOTE
If we look at the works that inspired the game to start with, the
answer is clear. How do we know what works inspired the game? The
streets of Silent Hill are all named after famous authors and musicians.
Many of these authors have put forth works which have themes and
situations adapted directly into the story of Silent Hill. A list of all
the works that I agree have had an influence on the plot of Silent Hill
follows:

1. The Regulators, a novel by Richard Bachman (Stephen King's pseudonym)
A young child is possessed by a powerful and irreverent evil, which
materializes the child's toys into reality, and turns an entire
neighborhood upside down. Life-sized versions of the toys invade the
streets, and anyone standing outside is killed. Those who are left
cannot call for help or leave the neighborhood, because the evil
entity has sucked them all into a conjured world, from which there
is no escape but to play this thing through.

2. Rosemary's Baby, a novel by Ira Levin, a film by Roman Polanski
Rosemary and her actor husband, Guy, move into a swanky and expensive
apartment in Manhattan. Their elderly and intrusive neighbors, the
Castavetes, are actually the leaders of a Satanic Coven. Guy makes a
pact with Roman, the leader, to get a lead role in a very promising
Broadway play. In return, the Coven is allowed to summon Lucifer, who
impregnates a drugged Rosemary with the Antichrist. Rosemary tries to
get away, but the conspiracy reaches so deeply that she cannot. She
gives birth to the child, and eventually accepts that she is the mother
of the Son of Satan, and to make the best of it.

3. Phantoms, a novel by Dean Koontz
Two sisters are en route to a small town. When they arrive, the entire
place seems deserted. Then they stumble across the corpses of several
people, who all seemed to have died suddenly of some sort of virus.
Others seem to have been butchered so suddenly that they were stopped
in the middle of menial tasks. Arming themselves, the girls suddenly run
across a Sheriff and his two deputies. These men are from the next
town over, investigating what is going on in town after the local
Sheriff called them for backup. They hear screams coming from a local
inn, where seven guests were previously registered, but only one
body is found. After searching the entire premises, they find words
written in red lipstick on a bathroom mirror, "The Ancient Enemy by
Timothy Lyte". Suddenly, the body they found is missing. They return
to the sheriff's station, and attempt to radio back to their town.
But the transmission is cut off by terrible interference. They are
suddenly attacked by a large, mothlike creature, who kills one of
the deputies. This is where most of the simularities to Silent Hill
ends. The rest of the story is about an ancient creature, who has
fed every couple hundred years on a small town or village, causing
the whole population to mysteriously disappear. Roanoke Island in
Virginia, and an ancient Aztec city are two instances. This thing
wants Timothy Lyte, and expert on mass disappearances, to come to
the town and see it, to tell the world to submit to its appetite
4. Something Wicked This Way Comes, a novel by Ray Bradbury
The novel relates the tale of an evil carnival that comes to a small
town, in the fall, out of season. Two young boys discover by accident
that the carnival people and their devious leader, Mr. Dark, are luring
several townsfolk into giving up their souls and becoming slaves to the
carnival. The carnival's main attraction is a carousel, much like the
one that appears in Silent Hill, except that those who ride on this one
are aged or made younger, depending on the direction the ride is
spinning. Several instances occur where Mr. Dark is able to convince
the boys that they are someplace that they are not, and that they are
being attacked by spiders that don't exist. These are the only
simularites that I notice between the two plots.

5. The Midwich Cuckoos, a story by John Wyndam
This classic science fiction/horror tale is the basis of the Village
of the Damned films, in which children have terrible powers to alter
reality and attack adults. The Midwich Elementary School in Silent Hill
proudly steals its name from Wyndam's book.

6. Sphere, a novel by Michael Crichton
Another Crichton work that may be an influence on Silent Hill is the
famous Jurassic Park, in which dinosaurs roam the planet once again.
I only mention this due to the pterodactyl-like flying demons in the
game, maybe they were influenced by the book. But even more of an
influence on the game, I feel, is the novel Sphere, which just recently
became a movie. This story plays with reality and the reader's head in
ways that remind me of Silent Hill. Also, one of the main concepts of
the book involves thought becoming reality, no matter how illogical
those thoughts may be. Monsters are generated simply because one person
unknowingly wills them into being. This is how I developed my theory
that Alessa is controlling reality in Silent Hill with her mind, and
that she is generating all the monsters in the game sheerly out of pure
thought. Notice how, when the monsters are killed, they fade away after
some time? I've seen it happen!!! Just back away from any enemy you
kill, until it is lost in fog or darkness. Count to three, and then run
back to it. You might catch a glimpse of the dead enemy fading away.
This fading of monsters happens in Sphere as well.

7. Hell House, a novel by Richard Matheson
Matheson Street in the game is named after the author of many horror,
sci-fi, and mystery novels. Matheson also wrote classic episodes of
Star Trek and The Twilight Zone. Needless to say, reality is not a
firm concept in any of his works, and irony in the situation of
characters is mainstay. This is especially true in Hell House, where
a team of paranormal detectives travels to a notorious house to
investigate. Upon first arriving, they discover a secret room which
seems to have been used for Satanic rituals, and the sacrifice of
living children, many of whom seemed to be burned to death. But things
are not what they seem. Luckily for Matheson readers, the author is
a bit more generous about explaining things at the end. I strongly
suggest that all Silent Hill lovers read this book, you should be able
to find it at the library, or a book collector's shop. You also might
enjoy his other work, I Am Legend, which was the basis of the film
Omega Man, starring Charlton Heston.

Well, I did like The Brotherhood of the Wolf (it was a unique, uncensored depiction of gothic horror) although it was a little wordy. But, since Silent Hill is wordy in itself, I should hope the style pans out for it.
The one thing I hope doesn't happen, I hope it doesn't depart too much from the series' characteristics like Alone In The Dark is (Also based on a survival-horror title).

I hope it will be in the style of SH2. A psychological horror title about the darker sides of human nature, placing in Silent Hill and with a 'sad' theme to it. Including a hospital. wub.gif

And I also hope it wouldn't be full of cheap "jump" scares. That would make me ANNNG-REYYY! OK, maybe not, but disappointed.

I thought Alone in the dark was horriable. But in all fairness I knew nothing about the game, Still I hope it's nothing like Alone in the Dark !
