Now Gathering Faq Questions

As part of the massive project that we have going to make MT's page actually, y'know, complete, Fred has put me in charge of gathering a FAQ. Starting from the shell provided by Cyn's excellent (but unmaintained, from what I hear) Unofficial MT FAQ, I'd like to know any other burning questions that keep popping up--you know, the "What color is Ping's hair?" stuff that you guys on SD keep having to answer and wish there was a FAQ for.

So, let fly! If it's worthy of an entry in the FAQ, it shall be answered in an official manner...

FAQs about the comic in general or just about anything mt? (like the site, or something)

probably a good one would be about the characters section, the story section etc, since a lot of people ask why those aren't finished. maybe there should be a section about megagear? hope that helps

And an example of how to link to an earlier topic without resurrecting an old thread more than say a week old?

"Where should I post <INSERT STUFF>?" might be a good question to give an ansver to at the first page. Far too many get BBQed in central, that should really have posted their topic in SD instead. Same for fanworks, they too belong here and not in A&D or CW.

I don't think there should be too much about the characters. A pic and their full name just so they can easily be consulted should you forget their names(new guys trying to catch up on 600 or so strips). Maybe including their first apperance too.

L33T speak. Ugh, an alphabeth could be helpfull, AND the note that it is not taken well in the forums.

Also it should contain every JP word that Fred, you, or any guest artist have used. While many might know what they mean, there are many who don't.

Oh and maybe a little on the timeline, if Fred has an official one. What day is it in what chapter? Aproximately how many days did CH 0 stretch over?

Hmm....what about those "I'm new" threads or the "I hate these forums" or the "I'm leaving" threads which could have been put in a small post.

And the people need to learn proper grammer before they post. What was that place they kept telling people? spellcheck? Or just copy your post into microsoft word and check there.

And no hentai. It should be obvious.

I'd recommend to answer the questions answered in the MT Drinking Game. Not that it would help, but hey.... they are frequently asked questions ^^

And two questions that are frequently asked, but we won't get an answer on it:
- Who's the homosexual character? (No answer because it's not important and we couldn't speculate about it )
- Why will we hate Piro in the end? (No answer because it would spoil the fun)

It would be nice to explain what the different forums provided, and which ones can be viewed when not logged in...

Automatically PM'ing new members with a message telling them to read the FAQ would also be a good, if slightly off topic, idea.

Yes, a list of characters will be useful. It did no needs to describe them.

1) Character: Does Yuki study in the same school that Largo gives classes?
No, she a junior-high student, and Largo gives classes in High school.

2) How to do more than one “quote” in a post. I had to figure that one out myself. Not a hard thing to do, but...

3) Why do we have to suffer SGD? (please, don't kill me!)

- What does baka (note: this would be useful for other japanese expressions fred uses in the comic. Like gomen etc.) mean?
- Are there plans/interests of Megatokyo being turned into an anime?
- What happened to Tsubasa (the character)?
- What is Largo's cool thing?
- What is Endgames (note: Maybe also What is Grand Theft Colo? What is "In search of Lost wings?"...)

Might as well put up my little thing:

-Why did people suddenly bring out drinks in my thread?
You probably repeated a common topic that has been overused and is actually on a thing called "The Megatokyo Drinking Game". It's a unhostile notion that you're not the first person to think of this. Don't worry about it; just learn from it.

1. Don't ask the obvious. (Wooo! Go Hayasaka!, I love Kimiko, Is Miho a goth?...etc.)
2. Search the Forum to see if your idea has been repeated. (What happened to Tsubasa, Is Miho bisexual?, Why did Erika leave? etc.)
3.Check your grammar. This is a place that strives that. Cut paste into Microsoft Word and hit F7 to spellcheck, or type in word first then paste here.
4. Don't fret or get angry, cause it makes things worse. (OMG, you guys r liek so mean)
5. Single comments do not count as replies, unless in art and creative writing. When you post, place say more than, "W00t" "This rocks" or "Wai!!!!".
6. Try not to abbreviate or use chat talk. Sure, "lol" might work, but "lik" and "4" aren't good substitutes for the words. (Ex: it's li|< y4 nt k00)
7. Please don't double post. There is an edit button to keep things organized.
8. L33t posting is not good in excess. You can do a couple of words, but don'y type full sentences and titles in L33t. "L337 |@0$71|\|6 $|_|x0rs"
9. Do not post in threads or bump threads more than two months unless for a good reason. (In example, commenting on the next part of a fanfic, or the current story is alright, whereas asking the forum "Who LUVs KIMIKO?" is bad.)
Er, and then some:

-Where can I find an international Megatokyo site?
There are ongoing translation projects at Megatokyo International, and they cover many languages. Simply click the drop-down bar.

-Can I put images on my website of the characters?
Yes, but pleease give all credit to Fred Gallagher before using those images; stealing drawings as your own is a breach of copyrights, and not to mention that you won't get any respect for it anyway.

-Why doesn't Fred PM/E-mail me back?
Fred is a very busy person, and usually is not able to reply to a message. He does appreciate your support, however.

-Why was I attacked for my introduction thread?
Megatokyo has such a large fanbase, that introduction threads just get in the way. We appreciate your registration with us, but these threads are pretty much insignificant.

-I asked a Megatokyo Question in Central, but they told me to buzz off. What's happening?
Megatokyo Central isn't what the description says. Typically, any story-related and character related discussion goes in the Story Discussion forums, and Megatokyo Central is like General Chat. Unfortunately, no one's changing it, so tell your friends ;.

As for the drinking game (which isn't really that long ), take out what's duplicated by my FAQ page and you've got:

#9 I just started reading, what the hell is going on?
#13 When is character X going to be in the strip again?
#16 Will MT be an anime?
#27 Why isn't MT as funny as when I started reading it?

I should probably have that #27 over on my proper FAQ page too, since I'm pretty sure I know the answer. These people who say it's not funny anymore, it's not that they started reading when Rodney was here and they miss his humor. It's that when they read all the archives in one shot it's paced well and the humor flows nicely, and having to wait for three strips a week is like throwing the brakes on the whole thing. Actually having to wait for the next page takes some getting used to, and I think that's why people keep thinking Fred's suddenly lost his touch.

BTW Dom, go ahead and steal any of the text I've written if you don't feel like writing some of those answers from scratch.
