The currency is Credits. The "treasury" is in Metal Oasis, though it is partly managed by all of the Oasis Councils. Red Coin - 5 Credits Blue Coin - 10 Credits Green Coin - 25 Credits Yellow Coin - 100 Credits Silver Coin - 1000 Credits Gold Coin - 5000 Credits All prices are multiples of 5. There's no real bank system: everyone is responsible for their own money. And I would prefer if everyone starts with 1000 Credits or less.
(sigh) I'm not very good with judging weight... but I would say the average weight is just about 0.9kg, about 2 pounds. z.t-enna - Your new profile is a little better, but I haven't recieved that PM yet and there are still a couple of spelling mistakes. Samu might have a point: this might not be the right choice for your first RP game. But you're still welcome to join. |

This sucks. I went and cooked up a really cool fight scene and then remembered that wapa wasn't gonna be posting for awhile. What I might do is leave it, then do a flash back scene in cooperation with wapa to establish what happened (something along the lines of berserking everything that moved). Mmm...carnage. As for this z.t-enna issue, I've said all I need to say. At this point it's either s/he's in or out, and I'm pretty ambivelent when it comes to that. [/SAMU] |

Oh. um. I've just popped online to dump a fight scene just now...(I figured Red swords wouldn't quite be as good at "berserking" an armoured sand-beetle and dumped a line about them being nocturnal... There's plenty of room to keep on, though, and I left you a way of finding my character again. Have some ore, if you spot it. |

Um...so as for the comment about Ore...um...disregard. Unless Andy wants anything there for the finding. Um. Sorry. |

Also for the guy who asked what a halberd is...A halberd can do 3 things spear someone with its blade at the top, slash or cut if you prefer with the axe like blade, and finally hook someone and bring them down to the ground. (I was doing a paper on weapons Buahahaha).

Since there’s no limit on when you can join, I meant to do this earlier but we suffered a black-out for a few hours today, slowing me down a little. Damn windy storms.
Here we go then. Name: Tal Laurent Age: 20 Sex: Male Birthplace: Storm Oasis Scavenger Class: Striker Weapon: Red short sword, L0. Not exactly a rapier, more like a Turkish Yatagan. Its about 70 cms long, or 2.3 feet if you are so inclined, sharp on the inside edge making it a hacking weapon. Very good for drive-by sweep attacks with a Streamer. Talents: Keen Sense, he knows where he is and where he’s going most of the time, and Expert Rider, he has spent way too much time learning to ride the Sand Streamers that he can make them do… well, things they shouldn’t be able to do. Physical Description: Roughly 6 foot; well built. Mid-length sandy blonde hair and crystal blue eyes. He wears a red padded, sleeveless vest as light protection against attacks and the like, dark riding pants and boots. He also has a pair of gloves and wears a pair of heavily tinted goggles, green. He also carries a cloak and hood in case of dust storms. He usually looks as if he has been out in the desert for days, filthy and covered in sand and mud, which is usually where he has been. History: Tal was born in Storm Oasis to a pair of Scavengers. The pair of scavengers: Tarc and Katiara Laurnet, some of the more famous Scavengers to ever navigate the desert wastes of Incuria. Whenever Tal introduces him self, people will usually recognise the name ‘Laurent’ and ask him if he is a relation to the famous pair. He doesn’t like being measured against the fame of his parents as he so often suffers with people. Tal’s father had insisted that he not follow in the family’s dangerous profession, setting him up to study and learn the trade of weather-watching in one of the many storm-watching centres in Storm Oasis. Despite this, Tal was still morbidly fascinated by his parent’s work, regaling in the stories that they told about their adventures. During his free time, most of which he made himself by not turning up to the weather-station, Tal learnt how to ride a Sand Streamer, often attempting daring tricks and stunts to impress people, mostly girls. As such, he has learnt how to handle them reasonably well. The more he uses one particular Streamer, the better he becomes with it as they are all decidedly different in their own rights, being made by hand and all. When he was 17, Tal’s parents disappeared mysteriously while out on an Ore finding trip near The Void, leaving him, and his 13 year old sister Kayda, orphaned and without a home. Tal set about following in their footprints, becoming a Scavenger himself. He spent the better part of the next 3 years scraping together a living for himself and his sister, travelling from town to town, roving through the desert for days at a time. He kind of wishes he had paid more attention to the Storm-watchers when he was younger, so that he could survive the desert and the powerful sand storms. Somehow he still makes do and can get move around in the desert pretty well, having inherited his mother’s more than keen sense of direction, its almost impossible for Tal to get lost. In more recent history, Tal and Kayda have been living in Outpost Oasis for about 6 months now. Kayda works in one of the smaller Ore trading establishments, her skill with the material not going unnoticed by many. She may be young, but she can craft weapons like a master and is not above even over-charging her brother for her services. Tal mean while has been trying to establish himself as a Scavenger, occasionally venturing out into the desert in search of Ore, abandoned Streamers or the remains of any unfortunate that has been claimed by the local wildlife so that he can loot their fallen bodies and sell the spoils. It’s not a pretty job, but hey, at least he isn’t charging people to get the bodies of their loved ones back. And there he is. I'll jump in if its all ok. Oh, and a Halberd is a type of polearm, not unlike the Awl-pike, Berdiche, Falx, Glaive, ...etc. And its for taking mounted troops off their mounts.... the hard way. Hook and pull, then stab the armoured prick while he's down because it would unhumane to let him sink into the bloody mud and drown under the weight of all that armour... In reality, I'd prefer the Awl-pike or even Croc or Jedberg Axe to a Halberd. If you like the halberd and want something that just looks cooler, go the Hippe or Scorpion, because... damn. The Scorpion just kicks ass. (yeah, I'm the war gaming son of a war gaming historian and have these sorts of books at my disposal |

Well... Seeing as it's too late to change anything and Blue Ore is about the rarest kind of Ore you *should* be able to find at this point without putting any effort in, I'll let you keep it in. Let's say: two pieces of Blue Ore. About PMing when it comes to finding objects: you should PM me if your character finds any items. If you have an idea about what you want your character to find (Ore or weapons, for example), then include that in your PM. If it's too rare for your character at that point, I'll refuse. If it happens to be an item essential to a storyline you're setting up or a special item, include sufficent details in the message and I'll approve it. Yes, it's slower to have to get my permission for finding every item, and it's more work for me as well. But there is a good purpose behind it. Not only does it up the challenge for you, but it also means that when you find a really rare item or weapon, you know that you've earned it. Right now, the rarest kind of Ore you should be able to find easily is Blue Ore, though it should usually be close to the local wildlife. If you pay attention to my story posts, you'll see hints about the locations of rarer types of Ore. And I'm fine with awarding your character rare items or Ore if enough effort is put in by the character to find them! Don't think I'll shoot down every request for something semi-rare! Oh, and TBA, your character is fine. Start when you want to! |

Mh... I got another question. Do people craft armors out of Ore? Would an Ore Armor be useful? Or are they too heavy?

Uh, yeah, you could probably craft armour out of Ore. It would be expensive though, because so few people use armour at all. Remember that people usually wear quite heavy clothing in Incuria, and wouldn't wear anything that would weigh them down un-necessarily. Some people would still wear some form of light armour, but it wouldn't be a common thing.

I think it would be interesting to have a character in Ore Armor. It'd add another element to the story, ya know? I mean, what good are my fencing techniques if ever vulnerable spot is covered with friggin' rock-metal? Chars would need to come up with creative ways to dispatch their oponents, but we'd also need a weakness besides being slow for the armor-ees. I'll need a thousand Andrews at a thousand typewriters. Very soon they will create the best solution to this problem ever written.

I didnt really think of full platemails or something... though it would be interesting... but imagine walking through the desert and sand getting into the armor with every single step you take O_o
I actually thought of armor which only covers the vital spots, like a breastplate for covering heart/lungs and a helmet for the head. |

Gak. And yet another question in our little game of "See how red we can make the GM's face" - How is water conveyed about the Oasis' - Aquaducts? Underground plumbing? Buckets? Other? Does this differ from oasis to oasis - ie - Metal Oasis= underground pipes, hot/cold running water, etc; Storm=buckets, Pillar=aquaducts? Just a question. [editus maximus] Oh, and GoD - I noticed that you refer to a "Dust devil" in your character sheet...I'm pretty sure you don't mean the Dust Devils my character was talking about (unless you want to change your background a smidge This post has been edited by wapa on Jun 21 2004, 12:08 AM |

Hey y'all, I'm new to MT forums and am still learning the ropes, but this rpg was too cool to pass up. Here's my character. I'll post a [story] reply as soon as I can. Right now, my bed is calling to me and I don't think I can stay awake much longer.
----- Name: Rowena “Ro” Lyndola Age: 19 Sex: Female Birthplace: Rail Oasis Class: Striker Weapon: Red Short Sword, L0 Talents: Pick-pocketing; listening in on conversations from long distances. Physical Description: Ro is a quiet, guarded girl with fair skin and chin-length burgundy hair. Her large, almost-black eyes, defined cheekbones and a strong jaw line give her a no-nonsense appearance. She stands about 5’ 5” at 120 lbs. The clothes Ro wears change often and are a hodgepodge of found or stolen items from unclaimed baggage floating around the rail stations and obnoxious passengers that were simply asking to be put in their place. Although Ro has spent most of her life eking out a living any way possible, she has a certain respect for most people. It is a personal code to not steal from anyone who may need the particular item, treats others with respect, and in general doesn’t deserve to be stolen from. Also, stealing anything other direct necessities is strictly forbidden. Ro currently wears a brown tunic and leggings, long black leather gloves, and supple leather boots. Her short sword is strapped to her back with a crimson sash. A small leather backpack holds her cloak, goggles, and miscellaneous items. Rowena’s people skills are unrefined, her demeanor is withdrawn, and her weapon is her sole companion. History: Rowena’s parents were cold and cruel; as a result, she ran away at age nine. A chance friendship with a railway conductor earned Ro a place to sleep at the station and free rail travel in exchange for the bits of ore she had a knack for finding. In the ten years she’s been on her own, Ro has become extremely independent and adept at protecting herself. With the conductor’s aid, she taught herself to fight. Survival was her main objective and the lessons covered many areas of battle, but she became particularly fond of close quarters combat using daggers. Ro has become a fixture at the local railway stations--arriving like a shadow, lurking about for several days, and then leaving as discreetly as she came. Recently, however, there has been a change in people’s reaction to Ro. Ten years as a part-time pickpocket is making her well-known and not well-received among railway passengers. It is time for a change of direction. Rumors have been flying around the station of scavengers gathering at Outpost Oasis; with her uncanny knack for locating ore, perhaps Ro could join them. Inwardly, she longs for a change of scenery and the chance to earn some money. Although becoming a scavenger would require a huge lifestyle change (a.k.a.-no stealing), it would certainly be wonderful to once again fight with her own set of daggers and sleep somewhere other than the cold station storage room. ----- Yes, she steals, I know. However, it'll make a great habit/vice to try and break. |

If any kind of armour is worn, that's the kind of armour it would be: as limited as possible, covering only vital areas.
...
(sigh) Actually, a good question... Each of the Oases are located in the centre of their respective Oasis Town, and as water is an absolute necessity, it is completely free. Getting water is just a case of going to the oasis and scooping some into a container. For a Scavenger or traveller, this would usually be a flask; for a household it would be a bucket or something similar. All of the oases have their own characteristics. Outpost Oasis is surrounded by greenery and trees. It is the most basic of the oases. Shadow Oasis has small trenches dug out from it, creating streams. They crisscross the farmland, aiding irrigation. Household water supplies are taken directly from the main oasis, however. Pillar Oasis is lavishly decorated with the oasis supplying water to four gorgeous fountains. Water is taken from these fountains, not the oasis directly, as a sign of respect to Tenpaii. Storm Oasis has a small fortified wall around it, giving it the appearance of a well. You can lean over the wall and reach down to scoop out water, but there are basic pulley systems around the oasis to help lower and raise buckets of water. Rail Oasis is located underneath Rail Central, the main train station and hub for the whole rail network. Pipes take it up to Rail Central, where it feeds the fountain in the centre of the station. Visitors take water from here. Workers using water in construction draw it directly from the source and transport it in large carts not unlike the carts you would find in a coal mine. Metal Oasis has a very basic plumbing system. Water pipes take the water from the main oasis body to six "Water Stations" located in the main residential and industrial areas of Metal Oasis. Buildings near these stations are more expensive. Water can be drawn from any one of these stations (though some citizens in particularly wealthy residential areas may object) or the main body located in the centre of town. DolceVita: Your profile is fine. z.t-enna: Don't worry, you didn't annoy anyone or mess anything up. It's probably better for you to learn the ropes with your friend first. Hopefully we'll see you again when you get more experience. Now onto an issue that's been bothering me: I think we might have to start including time stamps in our posts. There's a lot going on in a lot of different places, and time stamps might help everyone keep everything in order. Adding the rough location of the character might help as well. What does everyone think? Good idea or too much hassle? |

Time/date stamps work in Gray, and they worked in L+D, so they shouldn't be too much of a hastle here.
As a note, I have been working on my entry for about 3 days now... its not that long... really... Hmm... You can tell how enthusuastic I am by the length of my posts... And I guess I really like this setting... Mmm.... bikini armour... I already had ideas about the body armour. At the most breast and back plates, mostly of metal-grain, and shoulder plates if you really wanted them. But since there is no real war here, only Scavenger fights and gang problems, they really wouldn't have anything beyond leather hides as armour on most guards. I was contemplating the metal-grain armour for... something special... AI already knows about it. |

Timestamps do help, but they're kind of confining to some characters... and I personally find it a hassle to keep track of time. They're good in moderation, but not every post.
Encourage timestamps, but don't make them a requirement, that's my suggestion. This post has been edited by Nixoxygenate on Jun 21 2004, 02:03 PM |

I wouldn't require that a time stamp be placed at the top of every post: just when the player feels it is necessary.
For example, after a long period of travelling where nothing has happened. On the subject of time, I would like to ask that players don't stray too far ahead time-wise. Yes, this will be restrictive for some characters but if you stray too far ahead then you will miss out on key events, and may create a continuity error. How far ahead is too far ahead? Going onto the next day before I've finished up the current day. The days are effectively the "chapters" in this story, so if you want to stay involved in current events then I would suggest keeping within the day that the rest of us are on. If you *have* to go ahead then contact me. This post has been edited by Andrew I on Jun 21 2004, 02:35 PM |

I felt I had to put in a time stamp because my character's been walking through the desert for half a day...and I figured that I needed it, as so many people's characters just got off the morning train...she's fast, but she's not that fast...
(And I also had the idea to make her run across Bose and Nioxygenate's characters, and maybe never reach Outpost...but then I figured that wouldn't be allowed in the rules... |
