Idol
A filk of Superman
Apologies to Five for Fighting <---- link to audio version of song.

*A dark stage stands at the forefront of one of the largest, if not the largest, number of people ever gathered in one place in Tokyo. All eyes have just turned to the tall, very beautiful woman who has just walked on to the stage rigged for one of the biggest light shows anyone had ever seen. As she reaches the long microphone under a single spotlight in the center of the stage, a single tear runs down her cheek as she smiles ruefully, knowing full well what she was about to do. As she requested of the backstage crew before the show, the lights dimmed even more as she grabbed the microphone when the music began to start.*

I can’t stand the fame
I’m not always kind
I just want to stay
Away from my old life

I don’t want to sing
I don’t want fanboys
I’m more than some pretty face to idolize
And it’s not easy to be me

I wish that I could try
Pursuing my dreams
But I cannot hide
From a past that still haunts me

It may sound absurd
But don’t be naïve
Even idols have the right to breathe
I may be just scared
But won’t you agree
Even idols have the right to dream
And it’s not easy to be me

Running far away, away from me
Well it’s alright…
You can all sleep sound tonight
I’m not crazy…or anything

I can’t stand the fame
I’m not always kind
But they want me to fly
Why couldn’t they just see

I’m only a girl under silly bright lights
Working for rabid fanboys both day and night
Only a girl runnin’ from those bright lights
Lookin’ for special things just out of sight
Inside of me

Inside of me

Yea, inside of me

Inside of me

I’m only a girl runnin’ from those bright lights
I’m only a girl lookin’ for her dream
Now only a girl under florescent lights
And it’s not easy…
To be…
Me

*Slowly, and to the surprise of everyone in the packed auditorium but herself, Hayasaka Erika took one long and final look at her multitude of devoted fans, and walked off the stage forever.*

Superman
By Five for Fighting

I can't stand to fly
I'm not that nieve
I'm just down to find
The better part of me.

I'm more than a bird
I'm more than a plane
I'm more than some a pretty face, beside a train.
And it's not easy to be me.

I wish that I could cry
Fall up on my knees
Find a way to lie
'bout a home I'll never see

It may sound absurbent
But don't be nieve
Even heros have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed
But won't you conceed
Even heros have the right to dream
And it's not easy to be me.

Up up an' away away from me
Well it's alright.
You can all sleep sound tonight.
I'm not crazy, or anything.

I can't stand to fly
I'm not that nieve.
Men want men to ride
With clouds between their knees.

I'm only a man on a silly red sheet
Diggin' for kryptonite on this one way street.
I'm only a man on a funny red sheet.
Lookin for special things inside of me.
Inside of me
Inside of me
Inside of me
Inside of me.

I'm only a man on a funny red sheet.
I"m only a man lookin' for a dream
I'm only a man on a funny red sheet

And it's not easy to be me.

Very impressive, Arram. I'm sick of hearing the original on the radio every fifteen minutes, but this I enjoyed immensely. I can even see a vidfic for it. No apologies to the artist necessary save for those necessary when you beat someone at their own game.

*After the bedlam and the tears and disbelief turns to sadness, and the people leave and cry, _Quinn sighs, swears never to work concert security again, no matter how unemployed, and leaves a lighter burning on the stage.*

I'd give you w00tage, except it'd seem too energetic...

That's right, keep raising that bar for filking. Perhaps one of the best I've had the pleasure of reading. Scans well, sings well, and you did an excellent job of setting the mood. Superb work.

I don't suppose you give lessons?

If you treat me to a round, I'll drink it. And if I drink it, I'll sing. And if I sing, you'll regret it. :-)

"Network Roads"*

o/~[out of tune]
Almost heaven, MegaTokyo
'blue'-themed Forums, Hayasaka singing;
filks are big there, bigger than your screen
younger than the forums, pleasing to our queen

Network roads, take me home
to the place I belong:
MegaTokyo, forums pretty,
take me home, network roads

All my writings center 'round her
poet's lady, artist of the colo
strong and busty, praise her to the sky
missed a rhyme so sublime, teardrop in my eye

Network roads, take me home
to the place I belong:
MegaTokyo, forums pretty,
take me home, network roads

I hear her voice, in the mourning hour she calls me
forums remind me that she's gone, so far away
Looking at the time I get the feeling
That I should have long since gone to bed (gone to bed)

Network roads, take me home
to the place I belong:
MegaTokyo, forums pretty,
take me home, network roads
o/~

And all we're missing...

*Nightwalker waves his hand at the nearest window, a thin blue curl of energy rolling from his fingertips. Outside, a gentle snow begins to fall*

...is a little mood...

*Nightwalker whispers something in the piano man's ear, who nods, sits down and begins to play the slow version of the MegaTokyo theme.*

...and a little music appropriate to the scene. Bartender, another round if you please, for all the freaks, nerds and romantics.

Here's to all the people out there who're in search of lost wings. *raises a glass*

"In search of lost wings!" _Quinn joins the toast, drains the glass, and listens to the music for a moment, then speaks, almost to himself.

"Sing us a song, you're the piano man; sing us a song of night -- see we're all in the mood for melancholy, and you've got us feeling alright. Like, can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes -- but it's sad and it's sweet, and I knew it complete, when I wore a genki's man clothes."

Night says, "_Quinn, I believe this is killing me," as the snow fell right into its place, "see, I'm sure that I could be a forum star, if I could get out of this place."

It's a pretty good crowd for a Thursday morn', and sweet Nayuki gives us a smile: she's knows that we're free to pick the threads that we see, and forget about life for a while. And the forums? They sound like a carnival, and the bar tables all smell like beer: so we write up our posts and thank our dear hosts, and say, "Man, what are we doing here?"

- _Quinn

(after, of course, Billy Joel's "Piano Man")

Ooh, that was just beautiful. Very poignant, especially when put to the tune of the original.

"For all the many things, the things that we all wished,
For all the little things, that we had and now are missed,
For all the simple thoughts, that went out to another's heart,
And for all the stories told, until at last we part."

A glint of light caught from the glass as it found a little height.

She felt small among everyone . . . and short. Starting out, EarthStar hadn't been sure this was a good idea at all.

Now, though, all thoughts were quite banished, replaced with others.

Sniffling a little, she mumbled into her drink.

"I found out this evening, you let me know you were gone
The life, the pain they made put an end to you . . .
I sat in this bar, here, though I know I'm too young
It's amazing, what all false IDs can do . . .

I've seen sadness, and I've seen pain
I've seen shoujo plots that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when no one would understand . . .
But I always thought that I'd hear you again."

((After "Fire and Rain". In any case, I have really enjoyed everything that has been posted in this thread thus far. *nodnod* Yess . . . very nice.))

*No one noticed the tall, dark man ™ in the corner put his book away when he heard the woman sing. This was more than angst, he had felt angst before. This was something so pure that if it were bottled would be stronger than pure liquor.

He held the song in his hand as it faded away...*

I think you've found Erika's famous last song happy.gif

A lone tear snaked its way down the man's upcast face. Blinking, he stared at the night sky above. The light pitter-patter of sky's gentle falling suited him just perfectly.

It was good then, that she found the strength to depart before the monster consumed the girl entirely. He hoped that she might find her place; someday.
