Rules stolen from Dierfire

Foundational
01. First and foremost, everyone is here to have fun! I have created this game for our collective enjoyment, and I hope that we will all keep this in mind throughout the game. Please contact me directly (by PM) with any problems.

02. I have written these rules with the intent that they will cover all foreseeable situations. However, it is possible that I may have overlooked something. Therefore, these rules are subject to change at any time at my sole discretion. Should any changes be implemented, they will be announced in the same format as the original rule (main thread for main thread rules, PM for role-specific rules).

03. As the Moderator, I will enforce the letter and spirit of these rules to the best of my ability. By participating in this game, each player promises to respect the game, their fellow players, and my authority as Moderator by complying with my rules and directions.

Posting
04. Players should not discuss this game in any channels other than those I have provided.

05. Players should not use any form of hidden text.

06. Players should not edit their posts.

07. Players may not provide direct quotations from, images of, or other provable references to any PM that they receive from me.

08. Players may not use any form of provable randomness.

Mechanics

09A: At the start of the game, before DAY 1, there will be an 24 hour introduction period, this will be after roles are handed out. Please use this time to get acquainted with everyone!

09B. Each Day Phase will last 5 Days. Each Night Phase will last 48 hours. In between each Phase, there will be a period not to exceed 24 hours for me to write the transition.

10. On DAY 1 there will be a vote on who you want lynched. The lynched person will end up dead on the following transition phase. How to vote for someone is (##Vote Player) without the brackets. Bolding the vote helps me see it more clearly.

A lynch ends when half of the alive player base votes on the same player +1.

For example, if there are 11 players it would take 6 players to reach a vote. The final person who puts the vote down hammers the vote. Once a lynch is hammered it's not reversible and the person who got lynched is guaranteed to die without exception.

11. After the lynch the night phase will hit, at this time those with night actions can PM myself there actions.

12. Once Night phase ends, the night results will come in and the Day phase will begin.

FAQ
Q: Can a Day Phase end without a lynch?
A: Yes, if a lynch has not been hammered.

Q: Can the mafia decide not to kill during a Night Phase?
A: Yes.

Q: This introductory period, does it have any direct effect the game?
A: No, but note however the introductions period is AFTER all roles are handed out.

Q: How many introductions periods are there?
A: Only 1, before DAY 1 starts.

Q: How does the mafia win?
A: Mafia wins if the remaining alive mafia members equal the remaining alive town members.

Q: How does town win?
A: All mafia members must be dead.

Q: Is this game a bastard game?
A: No, that'll be probably some game in the future, game is rather vanilla.

Q: How do I effectively play as town?
A: Be vigilante, ask tough questions and be active and try and lynch mafia?

Q: How do I effectively play as mafia?
A: Pretend to be vigilante, ask tough questions and be active and look like you are trying to lynch lynch mafia?

Q: What is a no lynch?
A: A no lynch occurs when there isn't a hammer, thus no one dies during the Day phase.

Q: Do the narratives mean anything?
A: No, the narratives are just there for a fun read and have no bearing on the gameplay.

I'm going to send out the roles now, please read this thoroughly.

Sample Townie Role

Role: Townie

You have no special abilities other than the ability to vote.

You win when all of the mafia members are dead.

All roles have been sent out.

Please reply in this thread that you have received your role and that you understand it.

If you have questions about your role please PM me.

If you have not received your role please let me know.

Once everyone has confirmed that they have received their role and know what it is the game can begin with the introductory stage.

You do not need to say what your role is, just that you received it and understand it.

... or reading Vamp's post afterward, maybe the game hasn't started. I was just assuming the introduction period was over because a day has passed. If we want to wait for everyone to check in, that would be good too, but what happens if they don't?

Right I'm here. Was working so I missed the notice I had a PM right away. I'm afraid this might be faster than I was thinking at first and don't want to slow you down since I might be looking at some more unexpected overtime here. If that's the case I want to give as much heads up as I can, either that or I may have to sit this out as this wasn't exactly what I was expecting.

Since I don't have anything to go on I don't vote to lynch anyone, be that as it may.

Thanks for confirming.

Also relax the game hasn't started yet, i'm still waiting for confirmations from T3h Br0th3r and Rollo before the introduction phase begins.

Another thing will be, Day phases are 5 real time days long so you'll get some time in hopefully.

As the town gathered many familiar faces gathered round to tell their tales of the hard fought battles they've been through. It was a joyous day, faces people haven't seen in a long time. What might transpire the next day was irrelevant as the mood of hormony was in the air.

It is now the introduction Phase, please take this time to introduce yourselves and share the experiences you have been through in past mafia games and anything else you'd like to share.

The introduction phase lasts 24 Hours then the Day phase Begins

All but T3h Br0th3r have confirmed, as I said the game starts today.

Player List
01. Rapierman
02. T3h Br0th3r
03. Myxthol
04. L337 m4n
05. Wave Master
06. 6Shooter
07. Dierfire
08. Rollo
09. Gamestar
10. Alexanzer
11. Moridin84

Greetings fellow travellers.

Many of you have noticed my medals which I have got in combat. The DFC is from the Australian-American War; when I was in command of the 16th Boomerang Battalion. The Antarctica Star was from the Continental War of the late 2050s when we fought to retain our oil rights after the end of the Antarctica Treaty. The rest are campaign medals.

Of course, all of this could be in my head - it's a jungle in there.

Hello everyone!

I am Dierfire, but I usually go by Dier.

I come from another site with longer deadlines, so I'm used to having quite a bit of time to work through these games. I'll try to keep up and do what I can with the shorter deadlines.

Someone who has been around since the early days. Ah how time has flown. In mafia I was a Touhou character, a Gundam pilot, on a ship with Xenomorphs, a Werewolf, and other memorable roles. Some I lasted till the end and others had me wonder who would stab who first. I look forward to seeing the game start anew.

I'm pretty new around here by comparison to most of you. Stumbled on the mafia games after reading the comic. I enjoyed playing the Yin-Yang mafia quite a bit and running the Sting Remnants game was also quite fun.

Well I'm not sure if anyone here knows me... or if you did who might remember me. Despite having the least post count I joined way back in 04 prolly earlier than most people. During that time I spent a lot of time here on the RP board before I decided to join the military because of 9-11. Actually I'd registered before then but there was a very long wait before I could get in, and thus the reason why I stopped posting and faded from memory.

About me, I'm a pretty hardcore gamer and avid RPer, as well as one of the friendliest people you would be lucky to know. Also id be really interested to hear what I missed while I was gone, I remember this place to be very very active back before I quite literally lost all my free time. I do want to apologize about forgetting about Megatokyo though, for I have found memories of this place and its surprising to me I could go for so long without thinking about it again even due to my circumstances.

Also since I just thought of it, and apologies for breaking the edit rule, it may be important to state this is very different than I expected it would be and have no experience with these mafia games, which I assume to be more like a game of clue than a traditional RP.

I'm only a recent addition, but I've had some Mafia experience. Sometimes a winner, sometimes a loser (well, most of the time a loser). I don't do the "mafia tells" thing (ask Wave, he knows).

Outside of that, I've been here since '05, following the MT story. I was once a frequent table-top gamer (RPG & strategy). I've dabbled some in the "MT:tC" before they lit off for parts unknown. If you read way back, you'll see that I've done some essay-like posts ("wall of text", they call it)....and have been surpassed by another in that respect.

Unless, I'm mistaken, we are still missing Brother. I tried to jump right not voting before because I didn't want the game to stall on Day 1, but it seems like that won't be necessary. Going to make an unvote command just to be clear that the previous vote doesn't count.

It's too quiet...

I say that, of the players who have posted thus far, Myxthol is most likely to be Town (joking tone of response to my vote implies a degree of nonchalance that is less likely to come from a Mafia player because playing Mafia is stressful).

I could perhaps persuade myself to think similar things about Wave Master as well, but I know from experience that Wave Master can play cool as Mafia.

I'm probably going to mov my vote to someone who hasn't posted yet, but I'll wait a bit longer to see who else shows up.

I get the feeling we're not going to get a hammer on Day 1, but I'm not bothered by that from a narrative perspective, even though I suspect this is not the right type of game to be no-lynching.

Going to vote for Brother right now to see if he shows up. Generally speaking I want to point out that unless the game is detective or kill heavy for the town, successful lynches are necessary so more discussion and voting (or at least just more voting) will be necessary in the future.

*yawns and wakes up* Woot my freetime has come! WEEEEEEEEEEE~!

So since Wave mentioned it, I mean its Day 1. Is it normal to kill someone day 1? What are you supposed to do this early, ask "Whoever is Mafia raise your hand"? Of course this is the first time Ive done one of these, so I could be doing it wrong. I mean Id expect theres more town people than there are mafia people or the game would be too easy for mafia right? And thus encouraging random lynching your more likely to lynch a towny this early. But since you have more experience with this maybe youd already know that... and you did already try voting for me even though you unvoted.

I wasn't going to, but I'll do as you suggested and vote.

Random chance means there probably wont be a lynching at all then since it'd be harder to get enough votes to lynch someone successfully, which undermines the vote. Even though my vote was also kind of random... I didnt roll dice though.

So, for those of you who don't have experience playing Mafia or Werewolves, I'll just go over some basic things. Firstly, the original game concept is really meant to be played in person, and relies heavily on interpersonal cues (eye movement, facial expression, body language, tone of voice). When played online the game turns into something else entirely.

In a normal game (normal meaning a game that's generally town vs mafia and not factional), you can generally divide games into two categories. There are simple games, where the town players for the most part don't have abilities and the mafia have limited and simple abilities, and complex games, where most town players have abilities and the mafia players have varied and complex abilities to counter this.

In complex games the town can expect that it has a fair number of players with abilities that are investigative in nature. It can also sometimes expect it has some town players with the ability to kill. In this kind of situation, the town would usually want to be less aggressive with the lynch in the early phase of the game, since it can expect information to gradually accumulate as town players use their investigative night actions. Being hesitant on lynching reduces the chances of mistakenly lynching these players before they can learn anything useful, and then around midgame these players can start to reveal themselves and supply information, which is subject to assessment for trust.

In simple games the town cannot rely on investigative action results. There may be only one town player with an investigative action, or maybe even none. And even if there is one, there is a significant chance that any one player might die before gathering enough info to decide to reveal. If no investigative results are likely to be forthcoming in the future, then any passed lynch is just a missed chance to get lucky and kill a mafia, since future lynches are not any more likely to be successful than current lynches.

At the moment, I see no reason not to believe we are in a simple game.

And given that right off the bat we know nothing about who does what, firing random shots and seeing what lands is as good a tactic as any.

Well he still has time to vote. Or are you saying he's waiting to see who has the most votes before posting?

I'm saying that I don't find many of the players who are posting currently to be particularly suspicious, so I'm voting for one who hasn't posted (not all of the inactive players can be Mafia, but the density of Mafia players there might be slightly larger, and as an added bonus the Town players in there will be the ones not helping me read them).

Well, it looks as though we're unlikely to achieve a lynch today.

If I had a protective role, I'd target Wave Master.

If I had an investigative role, I'd target Alexanzer.

If I had an offensive role, I'd target T3h Br0th3r.

I'm very sorry for the absence, it's part laziness and part trying to figure something out.

I'm dropping 2 people from the game right now, one has requested out, 6Shooter, while the other has not showed up, T3h Br0th3r. I'll be pming people soon the update and the game will be running again.

Due to dropping some people out I have to readjust the game some, bare with me.

Oh, hey. The forums are working today.

Before the server crashed, I kind of forgot about mafia completely for a few months anyway.

Hi folks.

Edit: oh, GameStar, could I possibly have your 222 post? It was just random luck that I posted after it. Actually, I don't know if the post in this topic was even your last post. But if it was...

The place is pretty dead. The occasional gasp of life here and there, but otherwise dead.

Oi, ya, I can see the forums seemed unreliable for this past week. It took me several days before I could even access my PM's to sort through things.

As for the gasping, I can handle a dead space pretty well~ The nostalgia alone fuels me!

The old mafia IRC channel still has a few people, but it is mostly quiet. Your Mist channel is still alive somehow. As is good old Hinamizawa. You should visit us again sometime. I can PM you where to find us.

Yeah, between the technical issues and the general difficulty getting games off the ground, I don't think that I'm going to be checking in here often enough for this to be the best way to contact me.

I play over at mafiascum.net under this same profile name (Dierfire). I'll also put that information in my profile in case anyone needs a more reliable way to contact me.

By the way, I just followed a couple of you guys (Rapierman, Wave Master) on Twitter if you're wondering who that Michael Murrin guy is. Or maybe you knew it was me because you've seen me use the "Murrin" name in IRC or QuickTopic before. Or because it's in my signature. Or because Murren is close to Murrin.

Anyway.

I don't really use Twitter basically at all.

Also, I just revealed my identity, uh oh

Wish I had known, though. I would have given you a proper welcome (for some reason, it didn't show up on my timeline).

I'm very sorry about my failure as a mod. Somewhere I just lost my desire to host and it's not the website's fault.

As for ideas on mafia moving forwards how about dedicating a quicktopic for that purpose.
