You're just saying that because there were no cookies waiting for you when you left the Dark Side seminar.

The thing is, I didn't go into the Dark Side seminar. So while everyone was busy listening to the Darths blather on, I was busy raiding the concession stands and stole all of the cookies and other baked goods. Once people left the seminar and found no cookies... they were upset. And hungry.

That's why I had a concession stand outside the building selling baked goods to bummed out attendees. Made a killing in fact. happy.gif

QUOTE (paarfi @ Jul 12 2012, 12:46 PM)
, that answer seems a bit too facile.
Facile though it might be, that doesn't mean it's not correct. (I shan't bore you and burden you with details however.)

QUOTE
We do know three things that may help.
Don't tell anyone. Shhhhh. But @&* - @*) just might have a more apparent meaning than some might officially suggest, at least not when others are around. It could just be as simple as unshifting and pasting into the last part of a template in the form of some sort of hyper text transport protocol : / / derived equation. (Or some time-traveler putting in some hyper links for the benefit of others, etc etc etc.)

QUOTE
Based on that, I think we can safely narrow the scope of possible messages to warnings of alien invasion and ... well, maybe not much else.
Very astute of you. The primary clue is that @ to # (and all in between) aren't exactly what they seem; and thus tell us much.

QUOTE
So anyway, there you have it. Publicly, I'd like to say that I, for one, welcome our new alien overlords. But secretly, I shall be joining iffy in the resistance.
Viva!

QUOTE
And whomever the person on this forum is who has betrayed the human race, be assured that I WILL find you, and you will pay for what you have done.
Oh, indeed, they will pay.

Okay, I have to admit, the first time I read it through, I thought Largo called them Fapbots, not Flapbots. I thought it was a shot at Piro's pr0n games.

Then I saw he was telling stories to the kiddies. And even though most probably can't understand him (on multiple levels) I thought it was somewhat inappropriate. Then I read it again and caught the missing 'l'

I really like the WTFbots.  Colonel Sanders I recognize, but who are the other faces?

I presume you were able to spot the LEGO Minifig hand also? I wonder who the X-gagged ghost is.

I know that I am quite late with the praise, but the was just too cool.

Also, thanks so much for the Osborne 1 flapbot. I had one of those, and it brought back some really happy and frustrating memories.

I'm sure that thing is in the attic here...somewhere...

I wonder if those 5.25" 128k floppy discs will still read. I haven't used CP/M in a long time.

...kinda doubt it...

Ok, I'm an official lurker since July 2010 and reader for way longer. First Post.

I'm not very advanced in my 1337 speak however, can anyone confirm the translation of:

4[[3|3|>73|].

Perhaps:

That's correct. It was already answered for me by Invisigoth in the "[1337] An Army Of Ph33r [part 03]" tread

By the way, the left BEERBOT reminded me of the early years of the German Playmobil toys, where several of their sets with construction workers included crates of beer amongst the gear included. Note that this was quite acceptable and true to life regarding the local norm in those long gone days. Of course this ment that a playset including a portable loo for these brave workman figs was also necessary.

Just got back from vacation to find l33t awesomeness waiting for me.

I kinda love Largo telling Erika to get her 'awesome 4$$ in there and save my bacon". Because I love when he says she's awesome. Because she is. biggrin.gif

Sorry that this is belated...

******************

Due to the nature of the Megatokyo comic, I also think that it was particularly fitting to do something special with comic 1337.

And, of course, it is fitting that comic 1337 feature an appearance of Junpei. I assume that Junpei has ended up where Largo is as the end result of setting out on his daily journey to locate Largo and drag Largo back to teach his class. Junpei has a lot of practice at this now. Largo can't even get away from Junpei by leaving the city!

QUOTE ( Teddy-Werebear @ Jul 1 2012, 10:01 PM)
Cardboard Phearbot Army for the win!
It's so good to see ph34rbots in a story strip again!

QUOTE ( Rapierman @ Jul 4 2012, 10:54 AM)
The earthquake and/or tsunami also damaged a nearby nuclear power plant, causing a meltdown. Without the plant, no electricity can be produced. No power, no cell towers. No cell towers, no cell phones. GPS might still work, but Largo is effectively incommunicado.
Yes, I'm sure that there was significant disruption of power and other things in that area when the earthquake and tsunami hit. (And yes, Tangent discussed this as well.)

@l33tNova, @jrb1165, and others:
It's been nice to see some new voices on the forum recently.

QUOTE ( ifyoucannotgoaboveme @ Jul 10 2012, 03:31 PM)
It also reminds of the "Discover, Investigate, and Share Your World @ your library." poster in ways. Very nice.
I don't think that this has been mentioned in years, so...

It appears that the Megatokyo poster, and its related bookmark, are still available (at the moment) at the American Library Association's online store. (I would assume that Fred gets royalties from the sale of these...)

QUOTE ( TheGreatHibiki @ Jul 11 2012, 07:10 AM)
Oh and I just caught the fact Largo broke the '4thwall' and then the tsunami hit.
Yes! Nice catch!

Panel 29: "But as the forth wall of ph33r was purged and fell..."

I'm almost positive that Fred is deliberately making reference to the "FOURTH WALL" here. Which makes sense, since he has been doing "meta" stuff recently, and the two concepts are at least related.

The rest of this is... just rambling, really...

If we believe what Largo says in the last panel, then the fourth wall was broken. But, there's really nothing that we see Largo or the ph33rbots do in this comic that obviously breaks the fourth wall, unless you somehow count the animated panel (where ph33rbots are coming toward us), or the fact that this strip is referencing the real-life Tsunami tragedy. Fred does show us one actual chink in the fourth wall, in the form of Erika's "With what? Meta?" comment.

I would agree with TheGreatHibiki in that it seems that the fourth wall was broken and then the tsunami occurred at some point after that.

Maybe the ph33rbots broke the fourth wall, and that allowed the real-life tsunami to get through the fourth wall and impact the comic?

More of this quote: "But as the forth wall of ph33r was purged and fell, shaking the very earth itself..."

You could read that as the breaking of the fourth wall causing the earthquake, but I have a hard time believing that. Maybe Largo just ascribed the earthquake as being caused by the breaking of the fourth wall.

If we assume that Fred has chosen not to strictly stick to the actual time of day that the earthquake/tsunami occurred, then the interruption in cell phone reception and Largo's sensing of a great ph33r would probably have been caused by the early stages of the earthquake/tsunami. But if the earthquake did not occur until after the ph33rbot army was built, than those things were caused by something else. (Some other theories about the causes of these things have been put forth, and they are plausible.)

Largo's sensing of some sort of major free-floating "ph33r" reminds me of panel 1 and 2 of comic [1227]. A recurring theme?

Anyway... We have a reference to the "Fourth Wall", and (as Invisigoth pointed out) you have Largo as the "Wall Purging Knight".

Largo goes from "A knight that purges ph33r from walls" in panel 19 to apparently actually purging whole walls made of ph33r (Panel 29). So is Largo purging ph33r from walls? Purging the walls themselves from existence? Purging our ph34r of crossing the fourth wall? Or, more likely, just purging the fourth wall itself, in this instance.

Another indication that Fred has been thinking of the "fourth wall" lately is his 6/20/2012 rant:

QUOTE ( From Fred's rant @ 6/20/2012)
People kept asking me if I was gonna do anything special for comic 1337... I told them I was either going to do...

...or Junpei running himself ragged trying to prevent a chain reaction of imploding plot points forming an emo singularity that would suck in not only the Megatokyo universe but the reader’s universe as well (I scrapped that idea for obvious reasons).
I am glad to see that Fred is taking proper caution when dealing with the wall between Megatokyo's reality and our reality.

I'm assuming that was some sort of a donation to the ALA, for their fund-raising and the like.

The way I took it, 1337 has many walls. What was broken wasn't so much the one out to here, not specific exact direct. Even in the face of the fact that part of this was a homage. They themselves don't really say that, well they only do sort of. As in they're not talking to us directly.

The comments from Erika were from within to without, that without being Largo's relating the escapades to the assembled there. So we're seeing him painting a picture to the crowd, and we see and/or hear her in that story talking to the real him and the story him. The Erika present as part of the audience is also the one in the story, and the two are phasing and fading into each other within 1337 as does he. We don't get when one ends and the other starts.

QUOTE

That actually seems a large part of the sort of thing we're discussing in the other topic. It also might help to explain Miho. Or Piro, or both of them. That remains to be seen, but I'd like to think Fred's best giveaways are the ones that don't seem to be. Not that this is.

Like we can discuss the characters from the viewpoint we're in with them and they're real and they do things on their own, or we can just plop down the incredibly obvious and boring and talk about it as what we know logically and objectively it really is. But it's not that, it's more. There isn't just some static boring truth, there's pictures of wonder and imagination. Sort of like going to the library. And those pictures are just as real as any reality, because they're real too.
