If airships were no big deal (And had been around since the war 70 years ago.) 'Airfields' would have been in the language already.

Yeah, but airships don't need runways~

It's entirely possible they knew airplanes existed in concept, but maybe only as a novelty like the wright flyer and not as capable combat aircraft.

Exactly.

The Avatar universe already had a leg up on aviation anyway. Gliders were in use by the air nomads when Aang was born, and we saw in The Last Airbender that they had been adapted for use by non-benders.

I imagine applying the mechanics of powered airplanes to them wasn't a huge stretch considering the Fire Nation's prowess with machines. But since Legend of Korra was in the middle of a time of peace between nations, it's unlikely they would have seen the fast maneuvering planes of war before.

It is more than just that though. I'm not suggesting that they've never heard of mines, stun weapons, or mines but continue to not consider them or develop defenses against them. Even if the harbor wasn't mined and they were not attacked from the air, Iroh was expecting to fight those tanks with what? Hopefully not with just more fire bending.

I'm just saying there is a peculiar ignorance of tactics they might already deploy.

Lightning maybe? Also there were all sorts of benders aboard the ships, and bending is still likely one of the most lethal ways to attack somebody, even in the age of machines.

What I didn't like was that after Korra saved Iroh from the water, the two of them just sort of left the fleet and ran and hide. Iroh's not a very good general if he just abandons his men like that...

They had some pretty big guns on those ships, and benders could totally take down mecha tanks as we saw it happen over and over. You're also forgetting the 'United Forces'.

They could have not expected the harbor to be mined so quickly (or the tech has never been deployed in combat before). Assuming you mean airplanes in place of mines twice, there's actually historical precedent for knowing airplanes could totally screw you up and then not being prepared for it.

I assumed he was gonna blast'em with the battleship guns, ensuring much collateral damage!

So, the show was supposed to only be 12 episodes, but now the order has been extended. This plot line however feels entirely self-contained however, I'm not sure the point of doing another 'book'.

Wait, did something get ordered beyond the original two season run?

EDIT: Reading your comment again "was supposed to only be 12 episodes", I'm guessing no. But season two isn't new news. We knew this before season 1 started. Why else would we speculate about a big bad~

Yes, but the INITIAL order was only for ONE season and the story of the first season certianly fits that. I'm just not quite okay with such 'stand alone' seasons when we had a whole story arche over three seasons with the original series.

Perhaps, due to its differences from the orginal series. They were using this first half season as a 'test run' to confirm a receptive fandom before going for a full investment in three full seasons?

^^ yes

except for fan speculation, the creators didnt really know there would be a second season

QUOTE
Some Nickelodeon executives were worried, says Konietzko, about backing an animated action show with a female lead character. Conventional TV wisdom has it that girls will watch shows about boys, but boys won't watch shows about girls.

During test screenings, though, boys said they didn't care that Korra was a girl. They just said she was awesome.

With the way things wrapped up in the first season, I can honestly say I have no idea where the next season is going. Will it remain self contained to Republic City or will we see our heroes travel to other parts of the avatar-verse?

Focusing to one place was an interesting break from the first series (City of Adventure versus more of a Travelogue setting). Maybe this show will also break from the first series by focusing on self contained season arcs instead of a main arc that spans seasons?

Speculation for the future?

- Korra is not a master air bender...needs to work on that!
- I think Bolin and Asami make for a cute couple.
- As mentioned, I hope Bumi and Iroh hang around for a little bit where if nothing else it is o/~ oh drama! o/~
- The Fire Ferrets need to win the tournament...maybe. happy.gif

Speaking of which, I actually enjoyed the pro-bending stuff more than I thought I would. The combat action scenes where fine but they seem to lack the push and pull that was in the pro-bending arena. I'm not saying I'd like a whole season of this but it is a lot more fun than I initially expected.

For the future "big bad" they should stick with the themes of tradition vs modernity. I think it could be an interesting idea to have an overreaction from radical bending factions. I hope they avoid stuff like pulling a Buff Faith stunt.

also, remember that Korra is having to return all the bending that had been taken, the questions now stand: can she bestow bending on someone? what if someone doesnt want their bending back? what if someone does want their bending back but she doesnt want to return it for whatever reason? (the heads of the triads come to mind.)

as for the tech advancing aspects, once they had the internal combustion engine like what they use in the sato mobiles with a fixed wing aircraft, WWI era aircraft were just around the corner. remember the plane designs looked like Fokker Tri-wing planes like they used in WWI. That was a good stable design for the power to weight ratio of the day.

So watched this show this weekend.

Can I just say I really, really felt sympathetic to the Equalists? I mean, I dunno, maybe it's my American-ness, but power passed down by birthright seems... Wrong. It's like, imagine if the divine right of kings or mandate of heaven actually were a physical thing. It doesn't seem like the normals had too much of a say in this "Republic". There were just representatives of each bending nation that sat on the council (And none for the actual citizens of Republic City?)

Amon was an evil guy, and a liar, but he really did (Does?) believe in what he preached. A lot of people called the equalists Nazis or ChiComms, but they struck me a lot more as the French revolutionaries. Overthrowing the nobility (How many positions seem to be passed down hereditarily...?), a time of technological change (The Industrial Revolution following the Enlightenment period), public "executions" (Soul bending instead of the guillotine), the name Equalities (Liberté, égalité, fraternité anyone?), etc. Sure, Amon is an evil guy, but Robespierre was hardly a saint himself during the Terror. In the end, I'd say Republican France is a far better place than the Kingdom of France for the citizens of the nation.

I kind of hope this is carried through in to future seasons -- things've changed. The Avatar is supposed to bring balance, and it seems like life kinda sucks if you're a normal. When the SWAT team was rounding up non-benders, I remember the people called out pleading "You're our Avatar too!" The world is no longer four nations -- there are now five. Earth, Fire, Water, Air and the Republic. A land of technology and hopefully a place where normal people can someday have a better, more equal life.

I don't know if I ever felt that benders really had an advantage especially the way the Equalists were presented. Also looking at Mako and Bolin you have to wonder where being able to bend has benefited before getting into the professional sports while Sato was able to amass a lot of power without. It looks like Republic City seems to be generous and harsh on everyone.

I don't know. Having a lot of money doesn't necessarily mean you aren't part of a second class, though. Jews in Renaissance Europe were quite wealthy, but still lived at the whim of the powerful Christian nobles.

The entire council was populated by benders, and they didn't even flinch in removing the rights of the non-benders. The Bloodbender councilman was also kinda right -- benders do use their abilities to intimidate, even before Korra knew that the Equilists were violent, she did threaten the guy handing out flyers in the park -- and later smacked him around / destroyed his stuff.
