Busy doing garage stuff with the old cars and making christmas presents. So far it looks like everyone on my nice list will be getting either wallets, purses, belts, or costume accessories. My older brother will be getting a swashbuckler style sword belt, he and his new wife are seriously in to the renn faire & pirate festival thing. I already finished a fringed suede pouch for a friend that is in to black powder shooting. I figure he can use it for primer caps, lead balls, or just some place he can hide his cell phone when dressing up like Grizzly Adams.

All things considered, not bad. I'm entering somewhat of a job transition. I'm wrapping up my PhD this year, so I am applying for fellowships and grants while also writing a dissertation. emot-eng101.gif I at least got a break from teaching this year though, so I can't complain.

A couple months ago I started a new job. Finally. I'm working as an architectural drafter, even though I went to school for music. I picked up on it pretty quick. Still learning some stuff. And I work for a great company and great boss. That's more valuable than almost anything else in a job. Making good money now. And I like the work. I get paid to draw shit on the computer. It's great.

Still playing some music professionally here and there. Haven't been practicing much, hoping to practice more and get a little bit more into playing and performing than I have been recently. I'm tired of playing at a mediocre level.

Also dealing with some clinical depression (partly seasonal), but fortunately it's not nearly as severe as it used to be. Still need to get that shit figured out though. Because it still kind of sucks.

But still. Doing a lot better than I was. Very glad to have this new job.

Before this job, I had no job for 2 years and was living with my parents doing nothing. So I am very glad to be making money now, and with a very good job, at that.

As a parent watching my kids as young adults I'm wondering if we got this job thing all wrong. My son is great with computers, and wanted to design video games, but the job he has is stacking and cutting wood to build pallets. He likes the money, has streamlined how he spends his time on the computer to mostly productive things, and is getting physically fit. Maybe... maybe jobs that are not in a person's main talent are important, not just for money (a necessary part of life), but as a means of growing. I think our mind set on jobs has been colored by a lot of fantasy thinking about "fulfilment" as well as the "right cog for the right machine" mentality. Schools still stress the whole "life career" thing as an end point, rather than being human, flexible, and having the ability to choose sensible options. Just a thought...

I think no matter how flexible you'll end up being, there are a bunch of skills and things you learn through experience that'll end up being useful no matter what career you're in. working on something unrelated to your talent/passion can help draw those things into focus and turn into a good experience for the future.

I work in IT as a Storage Engineer and I'm pretty good at what I do, and in some ways I enjoy it, but as far as I'm concerned, work is work, and not really my passion. I have my real passion and (I've fagged up my facebook timeline endlessly spewing about my passion so I won't do that here) that's what keeps my heart on the even keel.

There are a lot of problems with the 'do what you love" argument about jobs, read a great article a few years ago and have since never been able to find it again, but the gist was that jobs which people do "for love" tend to also be low-paying "caretaker"-type jobs. The idea that people do them out of "love" becomes a justification for the low payrates, because the emotional fulfillment aspect then becomes seen as part of the compensation. This particularly affects things like education and nursing, which are arguably underpaid compared to their value! Again, have never been able to find this article again, but it was really interesting.

... of course I work in education. Thankfully my SO is in finance! Which he does not love, but which allows him to support a lifestyle that we both enjoy.

Does it count as "loving your job" when one of the things that keeps me going in is the unpredictable absurdity of what to expect will be happening at work, seen as a form of entertainment? As an example, many overtime hours (and lots of replacement parts) were spent refurbishing old equipment that those of us on the floor knew was slated to be decommissioned / scrapped, but the plant manager insisted on the rebuild work being done because he thought he was going to be able to convince headquarters he had a reason to keep these machines in service. As the work crew was about to start rebuilding the last old machine, a nationwide order was sent from headquarters saying, Not stocking parts for them any more, send the serial numbered components back, throw everything else away.

Reminds me of a friend's grandfather telling us stories about doing WPA work during the depression ordered by FDR...
On Mondays and Wednesdays we dug holes in the ground.
Was that all you did?
Nope, on Tuesdays and Thursdays we filled the holes back in.

Finished college last year and spent the year off pretty much. Working on my YouTube channel, waiting to hear back from a substitute teacher job, and maybe taking an exam soon for a government job. If I land the government job will be in the next building over from my father under his former boss which would be kind of funny and weird.

Not much new to report here. Same good job which I'm glad to have. Though I am also playing a solo piece with orchestra in about a month and a half. Kind of tiring and crazy.
