"I don't need to know", but...she's gonna keep it anyway. Curiosity will get the best of her. Mark my words. Gee, I thought Yuki was over her romantic angst regarding Piro. There's still a whiff of that crush in the air here. On the other hand maybe her ghost is whispering to her (as in "Ghost in the Shell"). Or maybe it's Miho's ghost doing the whispering ph34r.gif

One wonders how much of her nice Zom-zom food, I mean "electrolonical crap", back at home is five-finger discounted. A lot of it I'd wager. She's lovelier and sweeter-looking than ever in frames seven and eight. Yuki! Yuki! Yuki! wub.gif

ubu roi, I'm sympathetic. I think in this case, it is Chekov's laptop, but I'm completely in agreement about the tendency of many web comics to be somewhat...dilatory.

===

And a quick glance back at the pedophile discussion in the last thread:

Yuki's a thief, plain and simple. She herself doesn't understand why she stole the laptop, and once she realized that, she didn't return it.

This suggests she's not just a thief, but a deranged kleptomaniac.

Nevertheless, I am not remotely interested in the legal consequences of her actions, nor do I want to see her put in for treatment of her mental impairment.

I want to see things like how the people around her respond to the knowledge that she can't be trusted, and I want to see how she develops a conscience to go with her powers -- or not.

@Teddy: So you're saying that Sonoda Yuki is going to eventually find Tohya Miho. There will be a brief pause. And then the wee magical girl will pounce, ready to catfight for "her" man? happy.gif

Well I really think panel 3 needs to be made into a t-shirt. I'd wear it and I'm not even a girl it's so awesome - I might need to substitute "IT consultant" though (for 'magical girl' before you get snarky).

No Yuki, you didn't need to take it. Yes you could put it back. No you won't though because it might come in handy. Get a shopping trolley and fill it with plastic bags and join the rest of them, all those retired magical kleptomaniacs you see in every town and city.

This will be great when it's shaded and hatched too. (and coloured if we get that lucky).

Ok, this was cute, and Yuki is always win, but....

...would it be churlish of me to note that this didn't advance the story, and only added a tiny bit to character development? I hope there's going to be more to the stolen laptop than just this, or it was a wasted strip.

At 8 strips a month -- if that -- not many can be wasted.

(ok, ok, not everyone can be Howard-frickin'-Tayler, I know...)

Don't forget that not EVERYONE figured out that Yuki stole the laptop in the last episode. smile.gif Also, while i know that there are some episodes that are weaker on 'plot advancement' than others, you DO have the mechanics of moving things around, which you can't NOT do.

In all seriousness tho, how many comics have *significant* plot advancement on EVERY page? Hellboy "The Corpse" was made to be released 2 pages at a time, so something HAD to happen on the 2nd page, but for a long run chapter (like MT which tends toward 100 pages per chapter) its a real challenge to have SOMETHING big happen each comic.

Not saying im an expert, or that i do it well, but it IS a challenge, and sometimes even i feel a comic is kinda meh. but thats par for the course, yknow?

(and yes, i see this complaint every 4th comic or so)

As one of those who has occasionally hinted at a bit of impatience, I guess I'll take this opportunity to say you are far from the worst.

I read one comic that occasionally does the equivalent of tilting upward, as in Haruhi Ep. 0. Very frustrating.

When you wrap this one up, I'm really looking forward to what you do with a strip that you actually planned to tell a story from the very start.

[Yes, folks, I'm eagerly awaiting the end of Megatokyo -- purely because I'm convinced the next one will be vastly better.

[I've got my Unrealistic Expectations knob turned up to eleven, boy howdy.]

[Also, just to be clear, I distinguish pacing from the release schedule. They're not the same, and I seriously do not have a problem with Fred's release schedule.]

Well I think you'll have to admit that there was a little bit of ambiguity on that. Most of us immediately figured it was probably Yuki but there was nothing in that strip to definitively link her to the pilfering.

Well yeah but a lot of people, myself included, didn't even notice the laptop swiping in the previous comic.

Edit: More thought on "electrolonical," since she's technically speaking Japanese I wonder what "electrolonical" would translate to. dry.gif

Not many, and a lot of the time, you're better than most about having each strip be significant in some way -- especially through chapters 8 and 9, where, to put it simply, you were on a helluva tear. That's why this strip seemed to be so different.

Although I grant the possiblity that you're developing a "Yuki Concience Crisis" sub-plot, ala' Refugee's theory.

Sigh. Speaking of pedo.... Yuki wub.gif , Miho wub.gif , or Junko wub.gif ? If'n I were still young enough not to go to jail, which one would I pick? I just don't know.
Junko's got that prickly, snarky manner that is just going to crack me up once in a while, Yuki's super-kawaii, and Miho's just got that whole "bad girl" vibe going.

Interesting. I just realized I didn't even put Ping on that list, and she could be the Perfect Girl (not to mention, technically legal, unless it's a violation of the Android Rights Act of 1978). Only I never go for the Ditz, which she is.

Probably something ugly in katakana, like say,

e re ku tu ro ro n i ka lu

Since there are common conventions in Japanese for using loan words, they may not be translated, as such, just mashed into Japanese "spelling" (or quoted in roman letters like l33t in the Japanese issue of MT Volume 1 wink.gif )

Aww Yuki still loves Piro tongue.gif

Use the phone as a battery it should have enough power. It knocked out power and porn... Oh wait isn't that the phone flying away?

Love it, makes me think yuki is doing what kimiko wishes she could do.

One more quick note on "pacing", which seems to generate a lot of heat in many web comic forums:

It occurs to me that the last time I complained about it here, it wasn't pacing, per se; it had to do with a certain long awaited pay-off that we didn't get to see because of a quick scene change. The cut seemed unnatural, and struck me as plain, flat-out teasing -- not the same as pacing. Teasing, that is, dangling a pay-off in front of the audience, then snatching it away, is in my opinion a far worse and far more common problem than bad pacing. It does indeed deserve Death By Cat Girl. It's at its worst when a romantic or sexual scene is suddenly denied us. Either avoid that kind of material entirely, or play fair when you use it, but there's a kind of false prudery that's all too common.

Fred's pacing in MT is just fine; plenty happens in each strip, and in the overall story, I can see that each strip pretty much carries its weight.

Edit: Maybe she's going back for Piro's bag that she always seems to end up carrying. I bet it could hold the laptop okay.

Remember back in chapter 8? She dropped it, Piro ignored it, and Kobayashi picked it up--we haven't seen it since. In all likelihood it's been claimed by Kobayashi, who assumes it belongs to Yuki (as Fred didn't make a point of him returning the bag to her, I doubt it's ended up anywhere else).

I think Yuki is leaning dangerously toward moe here-- electrolonical gadgets, childish frustration and whatnot. I don't think that this is a very good thing, as I personally enjoy her matter-of-fact, don't-you-freaking-mess-with-schoolgirls attitude.

Obviously, she needs to learn to be more metaphysical about things. Stealing the data, and leaving the computer maybe....

But the data couldn't float with her above the city like this, unless it's twirling and sparkly, as contrasted to boxy and boxy like the laptop.

Whether it proves to be a Chekhov's gun or not, the mere fact that the laptop will not be where Piro left it the next time he wants it, is going to have a major story effect. Yuki could take the thing straight home to give to Zom-Zom for lunch, never giving the stuff that's on it a second thought, and the disappearance of the laptop will STILL cause Piro to panic at the wrong moment and to the wrong person, creating havoc and mayhem later.

Or perhaps the notable absence of havoc and mayhem and panic later will be significant for the story. either way, Yuki doesn't have to read the laptop to have advanced the story by taking it.

It would appear that I was mistaken. I stand corrected.

I wonder if Yuki does not 'need' or does not 'want' to read the logs. Does she not need the info of does she not want to hear about a relationship between Piro and Miho?

The bag is a lie. I think Yuki needs a reason to go back and find the battery, and that reason is now to find a bag. She doesn't care about the bag. But as long as she's zipping around Piro's apartment looking for the laptop bag she might find the battery (or the transformer). Or perhaps she'll look for a bag at the computer store down the street, the one that has a shelf full of batteries locked behind glass.

Going to the store would net her a better battery, but going back to the apartment would let us look in on Piro and Kimiko again.

Perhaps if and when she does sneak the laptop back onto the shelf (box) she'll leave the new battery in it.

Oh, and when she puts a battery in that thing and boots it up, that little laptop is going to sniff out the closest wireless path to the internet and will suddenly be not quite so secure.

But most importantly...

Yay!!... Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki Yuki

Tangent, my clients wish to inform you that they find your continued violently racist attitude towards catgirls to be highly offensive, and should it continue they will have no choice but to consider legal action.

Really, I'd expect better of you than to judge a person just because of their racial background. Hating someone because of something they couldn't choose and can't change? You should be better than that.

Now that I've ranted about something that annoys me, on to comic business.

Why did you even go to Megagamers, Yuki? There's nothing for you there. You have more important things to be doing. You'd best be about them.

And there you are, judging individuals by a stereotype again. And not even a particularly common stereotype, either. Catgirls are people, and people are people everywhere. Some people are relatively good, some are relatively bad, and some wander around somewhere in the middle. You cannot condemn an entire race just by the way some of its individuals may have acted.

On an unrelated note, am I the only one for whom the "Mark forum read" links, on all but the main forum index, are broken? Clicking any of them other than the main index one just returns me to the main index, without marking anything read. The link on the main index works as it's supposed to, marking everything read.

Firefox 3.0.6 on WinXP, for the record.
