Favourites are a bit of a touchy subject for fickle folk like me. I class my favourites as bands whose music I would actually pay to hear on a consistent basis.

Oasis - I grew up listening to their early albums which were brilliant. Have fallen off badly since their break.
Rammstein - English is not a good language for heavy metal/ industrial music. German is. Rammstein are god.
The Jam - Late 70's punk band led by Paul Weller, who is probably the closest thing Britain has to Bob Dylan.
The Beatles - Everyone likes the Beatles. They are terrific athletes.
Greenday - A lot subtler and more cerebral than most US punk bands, but still able to get a mosh going.
The Pogues - Funtime Irish piss-up music, if you're in the pub you have to listen to the Pogues because God said so.
Bob Marley And The Wailers - You've got to love the reggae.
Rage Against The Machine - Because they're cynical and aggressive. Like me, slightly.
Outkast - They're different and eclectic and not afraid to do things differently, that makes them good.
Nas - One of the best lyricists ever.
DMX - Another one who has fallen off since he got big and well known, but his first two albums were pure vitriol.
2pac - Not a big fan of West Coast rappers, they tend to be campy and stupid, but 2pac wasn't.

Posted by: Fahm Mar 7 2005, 09:16 PM
2pac was really good. I'd prefer Biggie over him though, y'know, repping the east coast wink.gif Shame they got killed over stupid reasons. Nas rocks too.

I forgot to add Jedi Mind Tricks. Stoupe is just fucking insane.

Posted by: Charlie OKane Mar 8 2005, 03:02 PM
I never really got into Biggie's stuff, mainly because of the whole "being involved in any way, shape or form with Sean Combs" thing. Sort of destroyed his credibility with me. He was a good MC though.

Bah. I love old-school west-coast rap. Sure they're campy, but I think that's what makes them good.

Hi, new here . . if you'll indulge me, I'll list some (hopefully not too many) of the bands/artists I most often listen to, and perhaps say something about them that nobody will care to read.

But first, some honourable mentions (probably would rank #6 to #10 if I made a longer list, but I don't have a clue in which order):

- Isis (melodic, moving metal. Difficult not to love)
- Neurosis (less melodic, more tribal and atmospheric [and inherently powerful] than Isis. I like the former better, but Neurosis set the standard for this sort of music, and they've got to be appreciated regardless of your taste for them)
- Miles Davis (I only own Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain, but both are amazing. Such talent is almost unbelievable these days)
- Igor Stravinsky (Have you ever heard The Rite of Spring, or The Firebird? Wowness. One of the great composers of the last century.)
- Sun City Girls (They have way too many releases, but the one's I own, like Torch of the Mystics, are amazing. Mystics in particular is very eastern-influenced, it's just wonderful . . hard to find these days, though)

And, some random bands I won't fill up too much space with:

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Estradasphere, Bach, Zappa, Fantômas, Jeff Buckley, Architecture in Helsinki, The Melvins, Brazzaville, Asva, Dengue Fever, John Zorn, Naked City, David Bowie, Ulver, Locust, Blur, that ever-clichéd "pre-black-album" Metallica- oh screw it I'll stop wasting your time.

And now, the moment you've all been waiting for (!), the top five.

#5. The Beatles.
Now, everyone says they like the Beatles, but I'm somewhat suspicious of this claim. I am a bit cynical, however. Personally, I own all the albums from Rubber Soul onwards, so while I'm still missing some stuff, I can say I appreciate them quite a bit.
It's still amazing to me how much they were able to get away with in their music, for such a popular band. Just listen to the white album, hear all the different styles of music (I know, I know, they were basically all doing their own thing on that album, not really being collaborative. But be quiet, I'm trying to make a point here) . . it's amazing that such diversity was met with open arms by the public.

#4. Radiohead.
I'll keep it short, because everyone loves these guys.
For those who dont, however, I present a challenge to you.
I dare you to listen to the first five seconds of Kid A and not fall in love.
Wow.
I don't think it's going too far to call them the Beatles of our time. I mean, they're British! I'm obsessed with the British . .

#3. Mr. Bungle.
I don't know about you, but to me they're probably the most prolific "underground" group of recent times. Following in the tradition of Frank Zappa, there's a lot of genre-melding in their albums, though in contrast to Frank, they only ever made three. The first is like a nightmarish circus. The second (and best, if you give it time) is like an aural representation of drowning. The third is like lying on a Californian beach, and occasionally being set upon by rabid Sufis.
I garuntee you at least one of your favourite bands has drawn some small influence from them; they are, I think, very important in the bands of today. Even Korn (a band I liked when I was 13, but have since grown quite weary of to be honest) claims to be fans: they play something they have dubbed the "Bungle Chord", I've heard.
Their last album is probably a good starting point, unless you're heavily into the experimental scene, in which case the chronological order works best.

#2. Secret Chiefs 3.
The guitarist of Mr. Bungle started his own group, which really got going after Bungle more or less broke up/drifted apart. Some Zappa-esque genre hopping, but, especially with the new album, it is more distilled into separate elements. The latest album sees the group actually split into six (seven? don't ask) sub-bands, each with their own name and style. There's black metal, arabic rock music, funeral music, an orchestrated surf band (they even cover Ernest Gold's theme to "Exodus"!) among others. Not so accessible, but incredibly rewarding. Full of unique, golden instrumentation, though hardly any lyrics as usual.
Most of Trey's (he's the composer, producer, arranger, and player of about 20 different instruments, among other things) influences stem heavily from indian music, arabic mysticism, etc. Slight bollywood influence (R.D. Burman, Ananda Shankar, and so on).
Insanely in-depth and complicated. I have never in my life seen something so fully thought out and explored; the new album (Book of Horizons, part one of the still-awaited "Book of Truth" trilogy) is so laden with conceptual esotericism it's mindboggling.

#1: Elliott Smith.
In complete contrast, Elliott Smith's songs aren't great explorations of spirituality, insane exercises in pushing musical boundaries. In fact, nearly every one of his songs sounds like it could've been a Beatles out-take; his style is from a technical point of view, very un-original. It's not always perfect, either. I can find fault with at least one of his albums, and he has made (IMHO) mistakes.
So, why number one?
His music has soul. There is nothing like it. So many times I've been feeling down, Elliott has reminded me that I'm not alone, he's described the most indescribable feelings in just a few short words in a voice that seems so fragile it could break at any moment, over melodies so gentle they would float away if you weren't looking.
He was, and will always be, my most loved musician.
I demand you buy "Either/Or" and his self-titled album. And, while you're at it, pick up Xo.

Sorry for wasting space with my rambling...

Yeah, french house is awesome. I like a good variety, but one of my more favorite bands now would have to be Senses Fail. I really like old Blink-182, like budha and dude ranch, but not so much their new stuff. Back to french house, Daft Punk is awesome, so is jungle and D&B. Local bands are great too, vendetta red (more mainstream now, i think, i still consider them local), school yard heroes, another more mainstream local band, Pretty Girls Make Graves.

Fave bands thread is so cliche, but here it goes, my current faves include; Hot water music, saves the day and alkaline trio. I'm probably one of the few peopl whos psoted so far who doesn't have an opinion and/or loves the classic rock band, I'm not to sure if thats to do with age or ignorance or what.

Just about all of the music mentioned prior to this post is too modern for my liking (laughs at self).

My preference is 30's-40's-50's:

The Rat Pack (AS you could have easily guessed)
Ella Fitzgerald (Not really sure what era she is from, I think 30's-50's though)
Bobby Darin
Frank Sinatra (part of Rat Pack)
Dean Martin (part of the Rat Pack too)
Sammy Davis Jr. (also part of the Rat Pack)

Note: I'm actually not an old man happy.gif

The Pillows
Of Montreal
Ayumi Hamasaki
BoA
Asian Kung-Fu Generation
Shiina Ringo
Koda Kumi
Hikaru Utada
Anime OSTs
T.M. Revolution (he has the funniest music videos XD)

o.o So... Of Montreal is the only band that isn't j-pop/j-rock, and was introduced to me recently. And you know there's the usual "there's more, but I can't think of any right now" excuse.

IHaveTheQi: Your signature picture is stupid and is far too overused. Also, and more importantly, it's too fucking big. Read the http://forums.megatokyo.com/index.php?showtopic=1684910 kthnxbai.

Also: Your taste in music is bad and you should feel bad.

EDIT:
QUOTE
Keep Your Sig Small
The limit for sigs is either 8 lines of text at default size and font, one 125 pixel high sig image and three lines of text at default size and font, or the rough equivalent if you have a sig image that is less than 125 pixels high. The maximum width for a sig image is 600 pixels. The maximum total size for sig images is 35KB. This will ensure that the forums load quickly for all users. Quiz pictures are, for most cases, too large for signatures.

Well cheers for giving me such a warm welcome to your lovely forum, I am sure I am going to enjoy my time here.

Looking at the FAQ one of the first things I see is the common "don't flame" warning, which you would appear to have bent somewhat.

And if you read further, it goes on to say that someone talking shit about the music you like isn't considered a flame ("you aren't the music you listen to").

I like your taste McSavage.

No I'm not the music I listen to, neither am I my own sig but I can't say it's a very good incentive for me to hang around here and recommend this place to my friends when my first post gets the reception of "you've done something wrong, now fuck off".

And "your music taste is bad" I have no problem with. "you should feel bad" I do.

ok, Favorite bands
~Rush
The effing best group, ever. My love for Rush is kinda...inherited.... from my dad.

~Def Leppar
Funny thing is I'm listening to them right now. Very awesome group.

~Metallica
THE OLDER STUFF! The new stuff is... meh...not very good... but their older stuff rocks

~Dream Theater
I love this group, because unlike most groups, they focus more on the music than the lyrics, but they have some gifted poets in their band, so the lyrics turn out awesome anyway.

~ACDC
Just a great band.

~Nightwish
Just recently introduced to them, but they're great

~Arch Enemy
Heh, do I need to explain why I like them?

~The Cure
Good music...nothing else to say.

And then for guitar
~Yngwie Malmsteen
I worship this guy! Best danged guitarist I've ever heard.

Next to Malmsteen, I lok up to

Alex Lifeson
The guitarist of Rush, and great at what he does.

Drum skills
Neal Peart
He beats all, the best drummer out there.

Bass
Geddy Lee
If you've ever heard him, you -know- I don't need to say anymore.

I'm a very big fan of X-Japan and Dir 'en Gray. I also like Evenesence. I've been listening to a station with all those songs made a decade ago or so. I think they are almost better than the stuff I get to listen from kids at school.

I was reading an OLD OLD post about "why people hate ICP" and EVERYONE said "because those little idiots don't use proper grammar and spelling!". That pissed me off, but bringing it back from the dead would kill me.

Someone at school showed me who they were, and I got some of their music. I hate rap, but they're awesome. cool.gif

I just aquired a bunch of Mindless Self Indulgence albums, that band is great. I'm really digging them right now. As well as MSI, there is also... Placebo & Daft Punk which are on my now playing list and a couple of my favourite bands.
