(History Lesson Footnote: the Avro Arrow was a highly advanced fighter/interceptor prototype, designed and built in Canada in the late 1950's. It pioneered many technologies that are now common in aircraft, like fly-by-wire. Its performance has been compared to a MODERN F-18! It set a couple of speed and altitude records but they were kept off the books because they were made using American jet engines, and the Arrow wasn't supposed to set any records until it had the even more powerful Canadian engines. That day never came... when Sputnik was launched, everyone realized that even the best interceptor jet couldn't shoot down an ICBM. Between that, cost overruns, and American pressure, the Arrow was scrapped. OR SO WE'RE TOLD... there's some mystery surrounding one of the prototypes that may actually have survived. The thing could already fly to the edge of space, there was a plan to have a modified Arrow fly as high it could go, roll over, and launch a satellite by rocket. What if it was taken by a fledgeling Canadian Space Defense Force, and adapted for transatmospheric use? )
