things I care about:

Seto no Hanayome girls - most (except Luna) seem to have a fairly stable bracket to start out from.

There's a decent chunk of the despair ladies, which makes me happy. They will all lose by the second round, except maybe Kafuka, Chiri, or Kiri.

Itoshiki-sensei in me wants to predict K-ON Steamrolling.

Kafuka-tan tells me that maybe she or one of the Hidamari ladies will triumph though. Afterall, Sai-moe can't possibly eat up such generic moe... oh wait, Tsukasa....

Anyway, ultimately this is one of those battles that no matter who wins, everyone loses. But it will be fun to watch. I'm cheering and voting for my Shinbo/SHAFT action, as well as delicious San-sama. Oh, and Ryougi, but she has no chance (sadly) for the long run. She might win round 1 if she's lucky.

Also, LOL Eva?

Yikes, four person brackets in the starting round this year? This is gonna get real messy quickly.

I would type out the matches for Aug 4th (technically tomorrow JST) but I'll let someone else do that.

user posted image

Match A1-1 = Isara Gunther (Valkyria Chronicles) - This is actually a very tough match to call with Chiaki Minami in there (and I tend to believe that the Minami-ke girls tend to do well every year) but I think Isara's moe is more fresh then everyone elses in the bracket. Goodbye Futami-san. sad.gif

Match A1-2 = Nao Chikura (Hatsukoi Limited) - This is a speculation pick since I haven't seen much of Maria Holic and Asu no Yoichi to get a feel for the two other girls in the bracket. I'll be very surprised if Asakura-tan makes it into the next round.

Match A2-1 = Minato Nagase (Akane-iro Somaru Saka) - Holy geebies! Tamaki-nee, Fatina, AND one of the better background characters of the last year in Maya Kihara (Toradora) in the same matchup right off the bat?! We know what Tamaki and Fatina can do in terms of how many people they can pull in, but I think it's going to be the two newcomers that are the dark horses. Either Minato and Maya's numbers are gonna be absolute crap or they're going to be high up there. Though, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see a four way showdown to the very end in this matchup.

Match A2-2 = Asuna Kagurazaka (Negima!) - Out of all the matchups for this day, this will be the most quiet one. I don't much about the other characters outside of Asuna, but Code Geass traditionally does not do well, so Kaguya is out. I'm going with the known varible to me, but I don't think this matchup will be as hotly contested as A2-1 or A1-1.

Well, those are my quick picks. I'm gonna save the image bracket above and do a more illustrative pick image - hopefully before the forums auto-lock me out from editing. Need to go fix the thumbnail, but that can wait.

This year's opening rounds have a lot of interesting matches too. Amu Hinamori vs Ui Hirasawa is going to be a very interesting match to watch.

Shameless Rena plugging occurs here, though out of the ones who actually have a chance of victory, I'm supporting Ami (partly out of what happened to her in our contest).
That said, AG, though I don't know a lot of the characters, I fully expect Chiaki to win her round, and I think the A-1 winner will be either her, Last Order, or Achakura.

Tsugumi, Mikoto, and Yomi are my mainstays this time around. With Saki, Kannagi, K-On, Strike Witches, and some of the old favorites, this is going to be a crazy crazy Saimoe. It's kind of insane how much Saki steamrolled the nomination preliminaries, even with how popular the series is.

Decided that instead of editing my above post, this warrants a new one:

@kaiba - you almost scared me of Isara, but im gonna stick with her because I went with gut instinct instead of checking vote counts and what not.

@Link - what's the vote numbers on Saki? I ended up dropping that series after two episodes because I thought it was going to be complete fanservice to the max and not about anything else. Worth picking up again guys?

Oh yea, and just to note - we are officially now in the post-Nanoha era of Saimoe. This is the year that's going to be interesting, since there aren't as many returning series as in years past that will always consistently have top 64 type characters like Nanoha had.

>what's the vote numbers on Saki?

I haven't complied the numbers and that's too much effort, but I can tell you that several Saki characters hit first handily in their nomination rounds, and most others didn't dip below third. You can see with how almost every character in the series made the contest.

>Worth picking up again guys?

Saki's a fanservicey show, though most of us are watching the series for cute moments combined with ridiculously over-the-top, impossible mahjong play with superpowers. There the main reason why the series is so popular and boobs (or lack thereof) can't carry a hit franchise alone.

I think people mainly watch Saki for the Mahjong.

Because it's good Mahjong.

Well, I doubt that's the case in the US. More like the insane Yugioh-style factor over here.

In Japan, I bet half the people watching the show care more for the moe over the mahjong.

Index is another popular series with enough cute girls to nominate, which helps because nearly everyone that isn't a very minor bit character (or less popular in the first place and on a second or third appearance, which sadly happened to Ogiue last year) from a given year qualifies for the contest. Though I'm betting it isn't as crazy popular as Strike Witches, K-On, and Strike Witches.

I dunno about Barkhorn winning. Probably it will be Taco-tan, although I like Kaoru better. I would like to see Fatina advance, but I don't think Druaga was very popular, so most likely Imoutits as you chose.

Going with Sakura Shishido instead of Ran -- don't underestimate the power of the scarf! wink.gif

And Misaki Hayakawa is a funny as hell character from Kemeko Deluxe, but Negima is a lot more well-known, so probably Asuna steamroll.

It brings a smile to my face seeing Ame Warashi make it into yet another saimoe.

Mahjong is a college manga club pastime.

At least in Kyoto University.

Also there's Mahjong parlors all over Japan, so a fair amount of people (albeit probably older men) know how to play. Manga like Saki are probably meant to drum up interest in the game amongst young people, hence the cute character designs and its serialization in a mainstream-ish magazine (ie magazine that's not all about MAHJONG.) I bet most people in Japan (that is, people that matter, www) watching/reading Saki either know the game or are now interested in it.

Oh, I didn't realize that Easy/Setsuna made Saimoe this year. Yaaaaaaay.

Apparently I'm proxy blocked like I was at random times last year, though maybe I'll be in luck since I wasn't always. Are any other midwest SBC/AT&T DSL users also blocked? I hope that lets up soon or else I'll cry. sad.gif

A lot of interesting matches - so much so that I made a blog post about it instead of taking up space here. Hope some of you guys find it a good short read. tongue.gif

And a quick clip from the blogpost:
QUOTE (AnimeGamer)

Match D1-6 - Amu Hinamori (Shugo Chara!) vs Ui Hirasawa (K-On!) - Out of all the matchups in the first round, this easily should be the most anticipated matchup of the round. The other two girls are quite forgetable, making this matchup practically a one on one matchup between the spiritual successor in a long line of Mahou Schoolgirl heroines by the likes of Sakura Kinamoto and Nanoha Takamachi facing against one of the best younger-sister (and very moe) characters in a long time in Ui Hirasawa - who will also have KyoAni voters pulling for her. Both can easily pull 500+ votes, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see over a thousand, if not two thousand for this single matchup. This should be one of the best first round matchups in quite a long time.

My personal preferences:

Eriko Futami @ Kimikiss Pure Rouge <<二見瑛理子@キミキス pure rouge>>
Nao Chikura @ Hatsukoi Limited <<千倉名央@初恋限定。>>
Fatina @ The Tower Of Druaga <<ファティナ@ドルアーガの塔 ~the Sword of URUK~>>
Asuna Kagurazaka @ Negima <<神楽坂明日菜@魔法先生ネギま! ~白き翼 ALA ALBA~>>
